We were down a few hours earlier today. There's no need to worry, we haven't been raided this time. We're only upgrading stuff since we're still growing.
One of the technical things we always optimize is where to put our front machines. They are the ones that re-direct your traffic to a secret location. We have now decided to try to build something extraordinary.
With the development of GPS controlled drones, far-reaching cheap radio equipment and tiny new computers like the Raspberry Pi, we're going to experiment with sending out some small drones that will float some kilometers up in the air. This way our machines will have to be shut down with aeroplanes in order to shut down the system. A real act of war.
We're just starting so we haven't figured everything out yet. But we can't limit ourselves to hosting things just on land anymore. These Low Orbit Server Stations (LOSS) are just the first attempt. With modern radio transmitters we can get over 100Mbps per node up to 50km away. For the proxy system we're building, that's more than enough.
But when time comes we will host in all parts of the galaxy, being true to our slogan of being the galaxy's most resilient system. And all of the parts we'll use to build that system on will be downloadable.
Wow. These guys are dedicated. This is pretty bad ass.
They do seem to get such bright ideas.
You see guys. This is what happens when you sign up to the Facebook of sex hook ups.
[sp]referencing their dumb as fuck ads. Sarcastic comment explained.[/sp]
"Low Orbit" and "some kilometers up in the air" are not synonymous...
This entire article is really misleading. They talk about 'orbits' and at the same time say their range is about '50 miles'. LEO is only defined at around 160 miles, and that's if you have the capability to get tons of these drones up there (It's not cheap). I'm assuming then that they're talking about UAV's since they say they can be taken down with planes, but in that case UAV's need constant refueling(Yes, I know what you're thinking, Solar Panels. The answer is no. Solar panels are nowhere near efficient to provide enough energy to run a small aircraft indefinitely, all while redirecting millions of users from one place to another) All in all it seems like a massive pain in the ass compared to just running a couple of servers.
Holy shit.
Air pirates!
I just hope it doesn't become self aware and they end up creating Pirate Skynet.
It's like regular Skynet, but with more scurvy.
And soon, when you download something a drone lands on your computer and transfers the file with speeds of 50Gbs. You only need internet to call in the drone, everything else will be done right at your desk.
Awesome but unlikely.
But awesome.
I want one too!
-snip I don't understand space-
Holy shit. A global network of small LOSS units would be amazing.
They now need to change their name to thepilotbay

I don't understand what they're trying to do. There's no way they're going to get it into space, a project like that requires extraordinary funding. They use the term 'drones' but what's the point? They're basically going to have things fly around? That requires constant maintenance, refueling, etc. I don't see the benefit.
Why the dumb ratings? Someone please do explain what you think is happening. Because from my point of view, none of this seems practical at all. It just seems like they put the words 'drone' and 'orbit' into the article and now facepunch is starting to circlejerk without any idea of what it is or how it will work.
Got to admire the Pirate Bay. It seems like every news article I read from them is something innovative (Unlike the MPAA), and even if we don't see their plans come to fruition at the very least I get to read up about new (to me at least) technology.
Crazy motherfuckers

Weather balloons with wireless servers attached that host the Pirate Bay. If US authorities (or other) want the servers taken down, they will need to find and shoot them down, which introduces about a dozen major legal problems to a situation that is already a red-tape headache for the RIAA/DHS/etc etc etc.
I fucking love the pirate bay, personally. Say what you will about copyright law, but what good is a system that can't stand up to freedom of information?
RIAA and MPAA's worst nightmare.
Oh wait. Worser seeing as TPB already stuck their entire website into a thumbdrive.

A weather balloon, usually filled with helium, will rise until it explodes, often in the stratosphere, perhaps 20 km above the ground.
Not much of a drone if it goes down in a couple of hours.
Wow, you at least have to give them credit for really being persistent. But I like this, either way.
The Pirate Bay never ceases to amaze me.

Look, I don't know the details, and neither do you, or anybody else.
The floating ship

Which is exactly why I'm dubious about the whole thing. When someone makes a ridiculous claim you're not supposed to accept it without some evidence. So far I see zero evidence.

"We're going to see if it's feasible to host our servers in GPS-guided drones."
That is hardly a ridiculous claim.
They just don't give up do they?
They could have ended it years ago and be in no trouble, maybe a fine or something...but now 2 of the founders are dead and the police are probably looking to finish the guys keeping them hunting for illegal evidence.
