(CNN) -- A newlywed woman died after plunging about 2,000 feet in a BASE jumping attempt in Utah's rugged Zion National Park, authorities said Sunday. Amber Bellows, 28, and her husband of two weeks, Clayton Butler, climbed up Mount Kinesava, a 7,276-foot peak that overlooks the park, on Saturday, the National Park Service said. The Salt Lake City couple were said to be experienced BASE jumpers -- in which participants leap from fixed objects, such as mountains or buildings, using parachutes to slow their falls. The risky activity is illegal inside Zion National Park, authorities said. (...) Bellows jumped first on Saturday afternoon, but her parachute didn't open properly, Butler told authorities. He said he jumped after her, but he couldn't reach her.
Source
She fell too hard for him
2 fast for love.
That'd be horrible to be right behind your loved one trying to reach them to save them but failing. Don't they usually have secondary parachutes though? It only mentioned her primary failing
She fell too hard for him
I'm in a huge dilemma here. Dumb or winner? Dumb or winner?
"and i'm free... free falling"
It's BASE jumping, there's generally not enough time for a backup chute. Iirc, most of the harness are made just for one.
Pretty much this. Very few BASE jumps honestly give you the space to deploy mid-air, as most of the time you're deploying as you jump anyways. Add on to that BASE rigs are probably just as snappy (quick opening), if not snappier, than most reserve chutes as well, and having a reserve may even be a worse idea. But yes, BASE rigs are made for single chutes.
Bullet dodged.
God damn the news is depressing.
I feel horrible for the guy. That must be devastating.

It's not funny someone died. Why even make jokes about this?
It's not funny someone died. Why even make jokes about this?
Things are subjective. But it's good you made sure to let people know you're on the moral highground.
Things are subjective. But it's good you made sure to let people know you're on the moral highground.
ah, yes, that moral high ground of not laughing at death
ah, yes, that moral high ground of not laughing at death
More like the moral high ground of pretending to give a shit about something which you'll forget about in like 5 minutes after closing out of the thread
More like the moral high ground of pretending to give a shit about something which you'll forget about in like 5 minutes after closing out of the thread
uh i mean sure if you want to disregard the gravity of the loss of human life in a tragic accident then be my guest i guess but im not a sociopath
I laughed at the jokes in this thread and feel bad about her death. what does that make me?
More like the moral high ground of pretending to give a shit about something which you'll forget about in like 5 minutes after closing out of the thread
It's called moving on. Do you expect us to care about it forever? No, but at least we try.
More like the moral high ground of pretending to give a shit about something which you'll forget about in like 5 minutes after closing out of the thread
The only way we can claim to care is if we allow it to have a large impact on our psyche. I like to imagine myself as the closest person to the deceased and simulate their pain inside me, that way people know I care.
Insensitive maybe, but making jokes on a forum does not equate to sociopathy.
It's a shame she died, but she died doing something stupid that she did of her own accord, it's not like she was murdered or died of an illness.
It's not funny someone died. Why even make jokes about this?
Because we do not know her personally and our comments are not directed at anyone who does know her, so we personally have no strong emotional connection to them and anything we say whether good or bad will not be heard by anyone who does. If we were only allowed to react with empathy and regret to everything bad that's happening in the news, this would be a terribly gloomy place. I don't think that makes us bad people. SH reminds me a lot of when I used to read the newspaper with my colleges at breakfast before work, we'd all read the news separately and discuss anything noteworthy and sometimes get upset over some particularly sad news or crack some jokes about something we found odd.

But everytime i read News about someone lost his life or one of his beloved you can be sure to read at least one idiotic inappropiate joke. Now dont call me humorless because i know how it feels to lose someone you liked a lot. It is horrible.
uh i mean sure if you want to disregard the gravity of the loss of human life in a tragic accident then be my guest i guess but im not a sociopath
she's the one who disregarded the gravity m8
It's not funny someone died. Why even make jokes about this?
By nature human life has very little value, no more than other animals. Value comes from the personification of the life. It's understandable that people on an internet forum would be making jokes, we didn't know her, and thus we can't truly understand the value of her life as her husband did. We can make shit up all day trying to understand, but we cannot really understand. The value you put on her is purely artificial, done probably in your quest to achieve a false sense of moral superiority over all of us "disgusting" forum users making jokes about a dead person. Unless I know the person, or knew of the person, to the level I cared about them on a personal level, I'm no more sad for their death than I am over the death of a giraffe in a Copenhagen zoo. To say otherwise is a complete lie, because we can't truly understand the value of the life. No matter how much you want to fake it. But feel free to prove me wrong, go ahead and go into months or years of mourning for this lass, don't forget about it by the end of the day or in the next couple of days like I know you will. Also, humour is a valid coping mechanism.
uh i mean sure if you want to disregard the gravity of the loss of human life in a tragic accident then be my guest i guess but im not a sociopath
seriously doe 1.8 people die per second, her death isn't more special than someone else who died that second - the only difference is this was reported if i die tomorrow i don't give a fuck if you make a joke or not - tear me a new one if you'd like
From what I heard, she did say it would be the last time she did it.
Holy shit. Imagen the husband....Falling down faster and faster, seeing your wife as the chute won't open. Trying to reach here and finally having to pull your own cord in order to save yourself, but knowing your wife will be dead. Jezus christ....
