With the Sony Xperia Z3 having failed to follow the LG G3 down the QHD display route, Sony has suggested adding a 2K screen to a phone is not worth the hit to battery life. While some have been left disappointed by the iterative updates made to the newly confirmed Xperia Z3 over the Xperia Z2, Sony has claimed the omission of a 2K display is actually a benefit to consumers. “Perhaps the most important thing to say about the screen is what we haven’t done,” Calum MacDougall, Sony’s Director of Xperia Marketing said speaking to TrustedReviews. “What we haven’t done is make it a 2K screen. “We have made the decision to continue with a Full HD, 1080p screen for the Xperia Z3, although we see in the marketplace some of our competitors bringing in 2K screens.” With the damaging affects to battery life the primary reason for this lack of technical progressions, MacDougall has suggested there are further thoughts behind not making the move to a 2K screen.
a midpoint to 4K is silly since at that point you wont be able to notice the gains in quality
Phones need what phones need most, long battery life and good call quality, not super dense screens.
I don't see why anyone cares about such a high res phone screen in the first place, 1080p for a phone screen is already incredible quality, after that point its basically diminishing returns (far more processing power required, more battery drain and not really any real noticeable image quality increase due to the screen size) Can they please stop trying to cram more pixels into these tiny screens and actually focus on things that matter like battery life and signal strength?
Anything over Full HD is silly. The only possible benefit is natural anti-aliasing. And text doesn't look aliased even on 1280x720 phone screens, and phones are hardly able to render games in massive resolutions while maintaining high visual fidelity and framerate either. "It has more pixels, so it MUST be better!"
What the hell is 2K if not 1920x1080? If 8K is 7680x4320 and 4K is 3840x2160, surely you halve the resolution again and get 1920x1080.
Would you even notice UHD at that screen size? I doubt there would be a difference noticeable enough to make the product a worthy purchase over a regular HD phone
How bout you start cramming more pixels into desktop monitors and not a screen the size of a fucking playing card. Edit: Sorry, I got angry. Please, we don't need more than 1080p in a phone.

Although, I agree with the sentiment.

It depends on angle and distance, but at 30cm, somewhere around 800PPI you start to out-perform human vision. LG G3 is like 550ppi, so we still have a bit to go before it becomes totally useless. Totally agree tho that its not worth trading battery life for.
Would you even notice UHD at that screen size? I doubt there would be a difference noticeable enough to make the product a worthy purchase over a regular HD phone
I'm sure you could notice it, not enough for it to be worth it though. Would be useful for perfect scaling of both 720p and 1080p content.
What the hell is 2K if not 1920x1080? If 8K is 7680x4320 and 4K is 3840x2160, surely you halve the resolution again and get 1920x1080.
4K is not two times 1920x1080. 4K is 1920 times two (= 3840) times two times 1080 ( = 2160), so four times 1920x1080.

why would you need over 1080 for a small phone, that's completely silly there is a point where you wouldn't even notice at all.
1080p isn't really 1080p on a phone either, it just has a density close to 1080p because screens are different in sizes
What? Phones with a 1080p screen have a resolution of 1920x1080. Just like a TV with a resolution of 1920x1080. It's the density that's much higher on a phone because the screens are different sizes. Full HD phones have far more pixels per inch than Full HD TVs.
Personally I think that everything higher res than 1280x doesn't make sense on a phone and is just for bragging rights.
How bout you start cramming more pixels into desktop monitors and not a screen the size of a fucking playing card.
They are. 4K monitors have been a thing for months, they're just really expensive.
Personally I think that everything higher res than 1280x doesn't make sense on a phone and is just for bragging rights.
You'd feel differently if you'd used a large phone with a Full HD screen for at least a few days. 1280x720 just looks blurry after you do.
Personally I think that everything higher res than 1280x doesn't make sense on a phone and is just for bragging rights.
You can easily tell the difference between a 720p and a 1080p phone. Anything above that is pretty much useless.
Stop enhancing screen resolution. Stop making my phone thinner. Stop making my phone lighter. Give me longer battery life. Please, it's all I want.
Honestly, I don't mind the rampant drive to make smaller, higher-density screens. Why? Because VR needs small, high-density screens to be a thing, and the smartphone rush is fueling that market. So I say, keep 'em coming, because it helps industries other than phones in the long run.
Stop enhancing screen resolution. Stop making my phone thinner. Stop making my phone lighter. Give me longer battery life. Please, it's all I want.
Agreed, as much as I want a powerhouse of a phone, I still want it to be a tank and have good battery life. For example, the Galaxy Sport series.
Stop enhancing screen resolution. Stop making my phone thinner. Stop making my phone lighter. Give me longer battery life. Please, it's all I want.
I would prefer a bigger, replaceable battery and a hardware keyboard over 2mm bezels.

I don't even notice a difference between a 1080p phone to my 720p GS3, there's no point.
I don't see why anyone cares about such a high res phone screen in the first place, 1080p for a phone screen is already incredible quality, after that point its basically diminishing returns (far more processing power required, more battery drain and not really any real noticeable image quality increase due to the screen size) Can they please stop trying to cram more pixels into these tiny screens and actually focus on things that matter like battery life and signal strength?
let's be honest, consumer bases are dumb as rocks. They'll look for the best boasted spec, and the one tangible thing everybody knows about is how awesome their screen resolution is. Before that we were going nuts over face about how many megapixels the iphone cameras were It was (and still is) the same way for small point-and-click cameras, boosting up megapixels (often at the cost of a LOT of quality during the goldrush phase between 8mp and 14mp averages) This was all eaten up despite the fact the overwhelming majority of people buying consumer grade point-and-clicks are uploading things straight to facebook, viewing them on the computer, and occasionally printing out small photos on a mediocre home printer. To put it in perspective, 8 megapixels is dense enough resolution to print on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper at 300dpi. 300dpi is dense enough that you need to get really close or use a magnifying glass to really complain about anything when using good paper, paper that bleeds a bit is going to muddle everything up anyways. right now we've got people going absolutely nuts over 4k displays without consideration for what's really special about them. I saw a massive TV with 4k and it was denser than my computer monitor, what makes you think slamming even half of that on a phone will do you any good? Oculus threads all over the internet are full of blind hopefuls going on about how they should totally consider using a 4k display, like it's just a setting you can type into the specs and suddenly it exists and will totally work on your midrange gaming machine that doesn't run dual 780ti's
how about you make a thicker phone with a fucking huge battery? I wouldn't mind carrying a small brick for old times' sake if it meant I had a phone with a 5 day battery life
I have LG G3, and I agree that having a screen which eats up that amount of power is stupid. At least its an overall good phone still.
I long for the day when my wallet-case for my phone doesn't weigh twice as much as the phone. I don't fucking need something this light when you could put in a better battery.
