Google's latest deep-learning program can figure out where a photo was taken just by looking at it. The program, called PlaNet, was trained to recognize locations based on details in a photo by looking at over 90 million geotagged images taken from the internet. That means, for instance, that PlaNet can determine a particular photo was taken in Paris because it recognizes the Eiffel Tower. But most humans can do that too. What sets PlaNet apart is that it can use its deep-learning techniques to determine the locations of photos without distinctive landmarks, like the random roads and houses below. PlaNet was able to correctly guess the location of images with street-level accuracy 3.6 percent of the time, with city-level accuracy 10.1 percent of the time, with country-level accuracy 28.4 percent of the time and with continent accuracy 48.0 percent of the time. While the success rate doesn't make it seem that accurate, it's still interesting to see AI developing this way. They could probably improve it with more geotagged image samples but 2.3 million images is already a handful.
That's pretty cool, would be neat to try it out on local photos :v:
great now you can play geoguessr against an AI opponent

Still way more accurate than humans. If I were to give you 100 pictures of completely random locations would you really be able to get 3-4 of them correct down to the street level? Don't think it's likely on chance alone.
Jesus even with such a low percentage, it's amazing that it can shift through millions of pictures to be able to come up with something with some accuracy. It's also scary to think that once the algorithm is tuned to a point of a high degree of accuracy, what the applications of use would be. Especially if someone uses this for malicious intent.

I was gobsmacked. Operation Shell Shock http://knowyourmeme.com/photos/796027-operation-shell-shock Oh shit, just went to knowyourmeme, and I'm 1 of 3 of the FB comments. :v:
