Playstation Plus Price Will Be Increasing to $59.99 A Year For US and Canada
Sony has announced PlayStation Plus membership prices will rise to $59.99 for 12 months and $24.99 for three months. The price of the monthly plan will remain at $9.99. The new pricing will go into effect on September 22.
The announcement was made on the PlayStation Blog, where an old post about August's free PlayStation Plus titles was updated with a statement.
"This marks the first time that PS Plus membership prices will increase in the U.S. and Canada since the launch of the service in 2010. The new pricing reflects the current market conditions while enabling us to continue providing exceptional value to our members," it reads.
"As a member, you will continue to enjoy the benefits and features that enable shared experiences, such as online multiplayer, free games, and exclusive discounts. You will also continue to get exclusive benefits such as online game save storage and discounts across the PlayStation digital services."
No word on price increase anywhere else as of right now.
pretty bold of them to do this when the monthly "free" games have gotten worse and worse
oh and the download speeds still suck ass
Oh this is going to anger people. I still see a lot of people angry about Plus for the requirement for online play on the PS4 (i'm one of them), but the defenders always tried to shoot them down with the free content value and low price.

Yes, the free content that you have to pay a membership fee to access. :v:
So $60 basically just for online features. Consoles are getting more and more unaffordable all the time.
The return of arrogant Sony.
At least offer an incentive maybe? There's was no "exceptional value" even at the original price, there's no way they sent out that quote with straight faces.
This is around the price I'm paying for ps plus here, welcome to European prices Americans.
I remember last gen when Sony acted like they were hot shit because PSN was free.
Fuck that. It was already hard enough before for me to justify paying $18 just so I could read messages and help people out in Bloodborne for 3 months

Next the PS4 Neo will be 599 us dollars
I never really understood why multiplayer has to be paid. Isn't it enough that we pay for the consoles?
To be fair, PSN servers on PS3 were absolute shite
But this pisses me off, people already paying a lot for shit.
Wish they can ant up the free games choices like they did in the beginning
Paying for servers.
Kinda like how some PC games' servers need to be paid for.
Good point, but i'm pretty sure, both Microsoft and Sony have enough money for servers.
Jesus, this is making me want to sell my PS4 to just upgrade my PC at this point.
I barely play any multiplayer games and lately the free PS+ games have just been indie garbage. It just doesn't feel worth it and now they're jacking the price up?
Its silly, but in the back of my mind I'm going "this is revenge for leaking the ps4lim"
On a serious note, this is kinda bullshit- unless you're playing 2-3 hours every day online, or you really like the shrinking amount of quality free games, there's no reason to pay 60 bucks a year for this kind of stuff. Not to mention how much this fucked over canadians, who already had a lower quality dollar to begin with. Hopefully they actually start to make this worth it as the ps4slim and neo start to fill the market.
im just hoping that nintendo wont pull the same.
although i doubt it, no one is going to pay a monthly/yearly fee to be whooped in an online mario kart rainbow road race

All that money you spent on PS+ could have been put towards upgrading your PC. Why not sell your PS4 and start saving up right now?
Fuck off, Sony. Keep giving people excuses to jump ship and go PC and it might just start happening.
I know I'll be upgrading my PC soon, so I'd be worried if I were my PS4.

Because I still use my PS4 and still have time left on my current PS+ subscription. I love my PS4 and my Vita, I'm just angry that they're pulling this shit.
Considering how shittacular PS+ IGC has been lately, are you fucking kidding me?
Considering how shittacular PS+ IGC has been lately, are you fucking kidding me?
That was destined to happen the moment PS+ basically became mandatory for the console anyways. They have absolutely no incentive to provide quality games through the IGC service when you have to buy PS+ just to get basic functionality out of the system. Before the PS4 came out the IGC was really, really good because it was the only real reason anyone bought PS+.

AFAIK shouldn't the only servers they're paying for be the login and download servers (which I would think digital sales/royalties would pay for. Download speeds are shit as well...)? Most games in my experience on console are either p2p, game company run, or a weird hybrid of the two like in GTA:O so why would one need to pay for online play?
That's because they want more money.
Not that anyone here is doing it but this is just a general rant.. can people please stop saying paid membership is worth it for the """"free"""" games
for the same money you could buy (most of) the games you get at discount and actually get the ones you want
its both a cool bonus and also totally pointless thing as it'd be better if paid membership didn't exist
Just sold my PS4 and all the games for 600$ to a relative.
Thank goodness.

I hope as they were walking out the door you said "no backsies"
Hoping Microsoft gets the picture soon and does away with paid gold membership.

"market conditions" doesn't really boil down to the value of money.
what they mean is that "we're charging more because we figure we can".

The games might be P2P, but there is a master server required to actually tell your P2P client who's available to connect to. You can't just send a request out to every machine on the Internet to ask "hey bruh, wanna play MW3???".
With the traffic that PSN and Live see, I expect their download server bills are pretty hefty, along with the ever increasing number of master servers needed to be run (though these aren't monstrously demanding to run). The service could be cheaper, especially since it's basically mandatory now.
