Sony suffered another setback on Thursday after announcing its long-awaited PlayStation Vita won't be available by the holiday season in the United States or Europe.
The PlayStation Vita won't be available until early 2012, despite earlier reports that stated the portable gaming console would definitely be available by the holiday season. One report even stated that it'd be out in late October, but instead it will miss the holiday shopping bonanza.
The PlayStation Vita features front and rear touchpads, built-in cameras, as well as a five-inch OLED display.
This move should help out competitor Nintendo with its struggling 3DS handheld gaming system. Nintendo sold only 710,000 of the 3DS in the United States from the months of April to June, a number it expected to sell in the first week, forcing the company to drop its $249.99 price all the way down to $169.99.
Nintendo hopes that the price cut will help spur demand, and now benefits from less competition.
Despite Nintendo's selling struggles and price cuts, Sonydoesn't plan on lowering the Vita's $249.99 starting price.
"There's no need to lower the price, just because someone else that happens to be in the videogame business decided that they were going to," Sony executive deputy president Kazuo Hirai told Bloomberg.
It will be interesting to see if the PlayStation Vita will be able to make major in-roads in the market after Christmas, especially if Nintendo's price cuts proves to be successful.
Sony also announced on Thursday that it will not be dumping its television business, despite losses for the eight straight year. The company has pared its factories down, but the company is still in capable of turning a profit and may never be able to, according to one analyst.
"They have done an awful lot already, and this was the time when that effort was supposed to come to fruition," Shiro Mikoshiba, an analyst at Nomura Securities, told Reuters. "It's honestly hard to know what else they could do.
Ugh. Come on Sony.
Seems like a completley unnecessary gaming console so whatever.

Fucking hardly, you could play Metal Gear Solid 4 on it, provided that you use remote play with a ps3 that has the game in.
Seems like a completley unnecessary gaming console so whatever.
How exactly? Its an incredibly powerful handheld at a very good price point with a potentially decent launch lineup and some awesome PS3 connectivity features.

Why not just play it on the PS3 then?

I don't really care though. Portable gaming is generally quite inferior to "real" gaming. How often do you even travel for longer periods of time when you're not driving?

Some people like to go places and not be bored, maybe? i was bored to death on a 68 hour car trip to south Cali a few years back, and that was before i had a psp or anything by nintendo.

Playing a PS3: Huge TV, PS3, power supply
Playing a PS3 game remotely with a PSV: PSV.

But if it requires a console with the game in, how are you going to play it in a car, you'd need to bring the console and game and a power source.

If you're gonna play MGS4 on your PSV, you need a PS3.
3DS has a chance at coming back since its new price drop and being without competition this holiday.

Not unless they actually bring out some good titles for it.
And improve the 3D

But you don't need carry around a TV, or the PS3.
$250 is a reasonable price imo for the vita. It's pretty damn close to a PS3 in price, but at the same time, it's pretty damn close to a portable PS3 anyways. I want one and I'm probably dumb enough to pay full price for it.

Isn't it a temporary price drop though?

3DS ain't got games. And the good ones it does have are mostly ports of older games.
Not bringing it out before Christmas is a HUGE loss in sales.
Android and iOS will kill console handhelds anyways.
I would have bought the Vita, except they're totally fucking everyone but americans with the whole exchange rate garbage.

You don't need the PS3 to use it. The only feature that you can use for is remote play. Which functions as a controller.

You need to carry around the PS3 unless you have the worlds most amazing Wi Fi (and make some serious modifications to your PS3 and PSV.)

PSP Vita has access to the Android market
Wait, scratch that. That was in early planning etc.
aghhh, well atleast it gives me more time to afford it.

you can get the blue tooth psv
Why should I care.
woah the 3DS dropping $90 in price?
When?
If i had a bunch of fucking money to just spend on shit I would probably get a Vita
Play a game in my room on my PS3.
Play the same game in the bathroom while taking a shit on my PSV.
Deal.

Agreed. I want one so bad and I'm not even entirely sure why. I have a PSP-3000 and I barely use it for much of anything. And the Vita will sell two types, regular and some kind of phone thing. I wonder how that phone part will work, if its for calls, texting, video chat etc.
I think the number one reason why I want one is because it looks cool, the graphics are very promising and the battery life isn't much different from current gen hand helds so we don't lose anything there.
I'm torn on my gaming life right now, I only game at night from maybe 10 O'Clock to 12 and later as i'm out all day every day. Right now i'm at this point where it's like I should just devote to one system and stick to it by putting all my leftover money and resources into that one system as to have one large library of games on one service as opposed to a large library of games scattered across seperate services. The TV is usually occupied anyways so I end up playing some shitty games on my PSP-2000 and it's chill as shit. The VITA would be perfect for playing games, browsing the web, video chatting and generally not giving a fuck.
