ID@Xbox has been unveiled in Cologne, marking the start of Microsoft’s charge into the indie self-publishing space. We’ve got a run-down of what it is, how it works and what it could mean for indies on Xbox One moving forward. Announced by Microsoft during its pre-gamescom address, ID@Xbox is a new program that will target, support and showcase indie developers on the Xbox One platform. In a document sent to VG247 last week, the company stated that it consulted 50 independent developers to form a service that best catered to their needs. The program sees registered developers given two free Xbox One development kits and full access to platform staples such as Kinect compatibility and the entire Xbox Live toolset which encompasses Xbox SmartGlass, multiplayer support, Achievements, Gamerscore and more. There are no application fees and members will not be charged for certification or title updates. Applications to the service are open as of today over at the ID@Xbox homepage.
http://www.vg247.com/2013/08/20/idxbox-revealed-free-xbox-one-dev-kits-for-members-policy-details-inside/
I just can't take this seriously. Sure, it's great access for indie makers, but it's all just strange considering how 180 degrees they were earlier this year.
There has to be a catch.

Their (only?) competitor proposed something better so they outdid them. Stop being so cynical just because its Microsoft. [editline]20th August 2013[/editline] Also I'm 99% sure this is the replacement to XNA that they were hinting at when they announced it was going away.

It's like.... It's like they're running a business or something!
It's almost like they're adapting to the customers demands. It's like.... It's like they're running a business or something!
It's just weird to see all these companies actually taking good decisions after doing so many stupid shit.
Its called competition... Their (only?) competitor proposed something better so they outdid them. This is like if EA shutdown Origin, stop doing DRM completely and stopped day one DLC with their games within a short period of time. It would seem odd.
There has to be a catch.
you still have to be approved, which requires you already having a successful title: "Will be granted with priority to independent game developers who have a proven track record of shipping games on console, PC, mobile or tablet"
Its called competition... [editline]20th August 2013[/editline] Also I'm 99% sure this is the replacement to XNA that they were hinting at when they announced it was going away.
XNA's replacement is the Windows Store (unfortunately). The reason why everyone (or at least I) loved XNA was because you could at least experiment with your game on the PC without having to be approved for anything, or pay any fee. Then when you wanted to put it on the 360, you had to pay a fee and then just debug it. I'd prefer if Sony and MS would release the SDK for free, allow debugging for free and without approval, and then approve your game when you submit it.
If Sony were to do this: WOW GOOD JOB SONY AWESOME TAKE THAT MICRO$HAFT But when MS does it:
There has to be a catch.

I just can't take this seriously.

If Sony were to do this: WOW GOOD JOB SONY AWESOME TAKE THAT MICRO$HAFT But when MS does it:
Sony already lends consoles to developers.
The thing was that Sony was all loving the indie scene right from the start when the PS4 was announced. Microsoft said near nothing about indies at both E3 and their revealing. The only thing i noticed from MS's side on the story was that you cannot self-publish any titles. So you were always stuck to some annoying publisher. But now suddenly Microsoft starts spreading the love of indie developers by doing this. Its just a little fishy, thats all.
... and here comes ZachPL
... and here comes ZachPL
Who starts with his typical dumb rating. Followed by some weak arguments and ending with never posting again in the thread.
There has to be a catch.
There is, it's called Microsoft.
Who starts with his typical dumb rating. Followed by some weak arguments and ending with never posting again in the thread.
But then people give him just enough attention to keep posting and the cycle continues.
this incessant bandwagon against microsoft is really pathetic
If Sony were to do this: WOW GOOD JOB SONY AWESOME TAKE THAT MICRO$HAFT But when MS does it:
Because nobody trusts microsoft because of their shitty (original) policies Sure they changed the policies later, but the very fact that they were going to go ahead with what they wanted to do makes people suspicious/hesitant
Because nobody trusts microsoft because of their shitty (original) policies Sure they changed the policies later, but the very fact that they were going to go ahead with what they wanted to do makes people suspicious/hesitant
who the fuck cares now tbh if you cant forgive a mistake that business made then you might as well hate every business ever with a burning passion. let it go
Sony already lends consoles to developers.
Pretty sure they charge for them, but more importantly to get into an agreement where you could be in that place you have to be a AAA game studio. Same with all consoles, apart from the new xbox.

This is great news for indie devs. I think its childish how people act. Would you rather see Microsoft keep making shitty decisions? Of course they change their ways.
I sort of would want to do this to get a free devkit to play the regular games on
This is great news for indie devs. I think its childish how people act. Would you rather see Microsoft keep making shitty decisions? Of course they change their ways.
The thing is, how are all these last minute changes are going to affect the consoles launch? This means that these last minute hardware changes are not going to be properly tested and developers who had originally developed around the draconian DRM to turn lemons into lemonade just found they need to tweak it again, making tons of last minute changes, or even delaying games. There are going to be conquences for the sudden changes, and will probably visible at launch.
If Sony were to do this: WOW GOOD JOB SONY AWESOME TAKE THAT MICRO$HAFT But when MS does it:
Because Microsoft displayed they had a complete disconnect with their market when they started unveiling their next-gen console. Sony haven't really tripped up at all and got off on the right foot. I'm worried neither company will properly compete with each other and end up fucking us over so we'll get another X amount of years with this console phase where nothing actually improves.
