[release]
What is .bit ?
.bit (dot-bit), the first project using namecoin, is building a domain name system (DNS) using the .bit TLD. Our goal is to spread .bit domains by providing resources and tools to the community, from developers to end users.
What is Namecoin
Namecoin is a peer-to-peer generic name/value datastore system based on Bitcoin technology (a decentralized cryptocurrency). It allows you to :
• Securely register names (domains for example), no possible censorship!
• Trade and transact namecoins, the digital currency NMC.
.bit Project Status
• Status : usable, alpha stage
• Number of public DNS servers : 2
• Number of domains : 4723
• Current block : 28879

Lets hope this will not be nesaccary - Help us stop SOPA / PROTECT IP Act!
Shame the fact you have to mess around with your browser to use them means that most people wouldn't be able to work out how to do it.
I really hope those cunts planning this legislature realise that even if it gets through (and at the cost of being hated), they will never be able to properly enforce it.
I still wonder why ICANN has a monopoly on domain names?

I am sure someone will develop a script that does it for you if .bit ends up being needed

If this becomes needed I can see it being implemented in browsers by the developers to be honest.

Because they have everything in place and no one is able to challenge them at it.
Cool, good thing it'll never pass.
quick, facepunch should switch to a .bit domain
facepunch should move to the deep web
facepunch should move to the deep web
Haha no.
facepunch should move to the deep web
suddenly CP everywhere
facepunch should move to the deep web
durgs discussion will be a whole lot more interesting I bet
what about .onion?
facepunch.onion lol
what about .onion?
facepunch.onion lol
That requires tor though which is a lot harder for the average person to get working than simply switching DNS servers or using a proxy.

didn't bitcoin crash?
I still wonder why ICANN has a monopoly on domain names?
afaik ICANN are the ones that have basically set up and maintained the DNS protocols so that domain names can function, so it seems only fair they are in charge of who gets the domain names
didn't bitcoin crash?
No a bunch of places banned it's use in the sale of illegal items.
didn't bitcoin crash?
More like, Isn't bitcoin a terrible currency and a terrible idea?
No a bunch of places banned it's use in the sale of illegal items.
isn't that a bit redundant
More like, Isn't bitcoin a terrible currency and a terrible idea?
Terrible currency? Yes. Terrible idea? No.

Being an inventor doesn't always mean you should have full control over your inventions. It's like if apple invented a phone and no one else could make phones.
And right now domain banning is a good example why one company ruling them all is not a good idea.

nothing is stopping another company from copying ICANN and setting up new DNS servers other than the fact that ICANN is the established go-to organization that has operated these systems for years, and they're the largest and most established organization for this purpose out there
so your comparison of apple inventing the phone is a bit off, because in this case, it would be apple inventing a phone, perfecting the craft of creating it, supplying their phones all around the world, but still allowing ANYONE else to create a phone and compete
