WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has lost an appeal against a Swedish warrant for his arrest to be questioned over alleged sex crimes. "The Court of Appeal refuses Julian Assange's claim that the detention order of the city court be set aside," the ruling announced on Thursday.

Mr Assange had called on Swedish prosecutors to travel to London to question him or, alternatively, to do so by video link, but the appeal court rejected the demand. The court agreed said that "interviews must take place here in Sweden in view of the nature of the crimes and the investigation and the fact that a possible trial requires him to be in Sweden", dismissing Mr Assange's claim that he is effectively under house arrest. "The fact is that Julian Assange can leave the embassy if he so wishes," the ruling said. This fact means that the restriction of his freedom cannot be equated with a deprivation of liberty."
Source (ABC News - the Australian ABC that is) Sorry if this is late, I couldn't find it posted (I searched Julian Assange and checked a couple of pages).
But if he leaves the embassy, won't he be arrested on sight? So it IS effectively deprivation of liberty?
But if he leaves the embassy, won't he be arrested on sight? So it IS effectively deprivation of liberty?
They'll ship him off to a cozy waterboarding session in America
Government always wins I guess. He's effed in the a
I hope they let him stay in the embassy. He's doing good work remotely. All he has asked is a promise from the Swedish government that he wouldn't be extradited to the United States. He'll go without protest if they give that to him.
Could anyone please explain me why can't he travel by helicopter? It's not like the brits are going to stop him by force.
Such a farce. It has cost £8m (£11k per day) so far to station police outside since 2012. He should arrange for a few hundred volunteers to dress up like him and flood out of the building so he can slip past the coppers waiting to nab him. :v:
But if he leaves the embassy, won't he be arrested on sight? So it IS effectively deprivation of liberty?
He is the one depriving himself of liberty. He is the one that chooses to continue to live in that embassy.
He is the one depriving himself of liberty. He is the one that chooses to continue to live in that embassy.
It's a fucking Hobson's choice, dude. He has no real freedom.
They'll ship him off to a cozy waterboarding session in America
Or maybe he'd actually have to stand and face his rape charges.
Or maybe he'd actually have to stand and face his rape charges.
"rape"
It would be interesting to see what would happen if he turned himself in.
It would be interesting to see what would happen if he turned himself in.
Do trial in Sweden, quiet for a few months for people to forget about him then he disappears
"rape"
He might not be guilty, but there's no way around the fact that two women accused him of raping them.
"rape"
Yeah it must be a false accusation because you agree with his politics, right?
Yeah it must be a false accusation because you agree with his politics, right?
You sure made alot of assumptions based on him writing "rape" in quotations. I think he was just pointing out it IS an allegation.
I think he was just pointing out it IS an allegation.
Which should be properly addressed in a court of law, not ignored and dismissed because people are paranoiacally convinced that the government of Sweden would directly oppose the will of its people right after elections to suck up to the US by pulling a gotcha and shipping him here, where he would of course be waterboarded forever in Guantanamo, because sacrificing more political goodwill both domestically and abroad right after the NSA scandal and in the middle of a torture scandal is definitely right at the top of the administration's to-do list.
Could anyone please explain me why can't he travel by helicopter? It's not like the brits are going to stop him by force.
The helicopter would be flying in the airspace of another country, so it could be forced to land.
This here Is what makes me side with Assange on this one
It's nothing out of the ordinary though, governments generally don't legitimize fugitives by meeting them on neutral ground when conducting a criminal investigation. They clearly want to arrest him so they want him back on Swedish soil so he can face charges, not a phone interview. At the very least, if they think they have a legitimate case, interviewing him and establishing that they could probably convict him will only make him more determined to avoid coming back. That's also part of why convictions in absentia are rare. Compare this to the US's attempts to extradite Roman Polanski. We haven't sent investigators to chat with him in Europe, we've asked local governments to investigate and extradite. You can't conduct a criminal investigation if you have no legal authority over the suspect.
You have to engage in some pretty serious mental gymnastics to call someone hiding out in an embassy to evade prosecution a deprivation of liberty.
No, you don't. It's really effing simple. If he leaves that embassy he will be arrested. He does not have liberty to go where he wishes, live where he wishes, do as he wishes, because of that simple fact. Therefore he has been deprived of liberty already. He's been in jail since 2012 in all but name.

Except people only make grandiose statements about suspects being 'deprived of liberty' when they support the suspect politically.
Yeah it must be a false accusation because you agree with his politics, right?
Imagine believing that he's guilty after those NSA documents leaked detailing how accusing someone of rape is the first thing they do when someone makes an enemy of them.
He's evading arrest, he doesn't have the right of freedom.
I never argued anything on that topic.
I hope they let him stay in the embassy. He's doing good work remotely. All he has asked is a promise from the Swedish government that he wouldn't be extradited to the United States. He'll go without protest if they give that to him.
Had he said that?
Had he said that?
I recall something similar. That he said he'd come out if they agreed to not ship him to the US, and they refused to agree with that.
Imagine believing that he's guilty after those NSA documents leaked detailing how accusing someone of rape is the first thing they do when someone makes an enemy of them.
Honestly-- I don't believe the charges in the slightest. Probably some government trying to fuck him over. I mean, what better way is there to make people hate a person?
