eoul, South Korea (CNN) -- It was code named "Dawn of Gulf of Aden" and when South Korea gave it a green light Friday, its daring execution led to five hours of chilling drama on the high seas. A South Korean navy destroyer and Lynx helicopters fired warning shots as elite forces, in pre-dawn darkness, silently approached the deck of the freighter Samho Jewelry, hijacked by Somali pirates Saturday, according to the Yonhap news agency. The pirates fired with their AK-47s and rocket-propelled grenades. The South Koreans shot back. When it was all over, the South Koreans rescued 21 sailors, killed eight pirates and captured five others, said Lt. Gen. Lee Sung-ho, a spokesman for South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. Demystifying modern-day pirates The captain of the 11,500-ton ship was shot in the stomach during the rescue but no other crew member was hurt. South Korean President Lee Myung-bak praised the bold rescue in a nationally televised address. "Our military carried out the operation perfectly under difficult circumstances," he said. "We will not accept any actions that threaten the lives of our people." Lee said the U.S. military also assisted in the operation. "This mission shows that the South Korean government will not negotiate with pirates," he said. The South Koreans launched their secret rescue mission earlier in the week, chasing the Samho Jewelry for days on the waters of the Arabian Sea. When the pirates seemed exhausted and after intelligence that suggested a pirate "mother ship" was leaving a Somali port, the South Koreans decided to attempt the rescue, Yonhap said. The Samho Jewelry was carrying chemicals from the United Arab Emirates to Sri Lanka when it was hijacked. Somali pirates have seized seven other South Korean ships. All but one have been released with ransom payments, Yonhap said.
Badass.
Now this is how you're supposed to take care of pirates.
Fucking pirates got what they had coming.
Well done.
"Our military carried out the operation perfectly under difficult circumstances" "The captain of the 11,500-ton ship was shot in the stomach during the rescue" Hmm...

Goverment does not pay the ransoms, the companies do if they want.
Goverment does not pay the ransoms, the companies do if they want.
Yeah I'm sure companies love paying out money to pirates.
Now for the rest of those sailors and ships still being held captive.
I thought all of them were busy with starcraft 2...Maybe not!
South Korea Best Korea
North Korea would've done it better.
Yeah I'm sure companies love paying out money to pirates.
Compare the cost of buying or manufacturing another ship, paying any life insurance, dealing with legalities, and paying for any product lost on board the ship to paying ransom.
i though the title said sarah palin pulls off daring rescue of pirated ship
North Korea would've done it better.
"North Korean ship sunk by pirates!"
i though the title said sarah palin pulls off daring rescue of pirated ship
by that you mean the government, taken over by the democrat "pirates", right? and that she's rescuing america from the liberals
Where can you find pylons? Off the coast Korea. Off the coast of Korea now there's pirates.
why doesn't anyone else have the balls to do this I think eight dead pirates is a better example to other would-be pirates than eight filthy rich ones
"Our military carried out the operation perfectly under difficult circumstances" "The captain of the 11,500-ton ship was shot in the stomach during the rescue" Hmm...
You try to shoot 13 pirates while civillians are probably everywhere on the ship. Try it.
Yeah I'm sure companies love paying out money to pirates.
Still costs less than the ship, it's cargo and it's crew [editline]21st January 2011[/editline]
"North Korean ship sunk by pirates!"
North Korea sinks North Korean ship with all pirates aboard
Why hasn't war been declared with Somalia yet? Its obvious the pirates control Somalia's government, and these are government sponsored operations carried out by pirates operating under Somalia's current government, yet all it is is standoffs. If it just goes on like this, then it will be hell. If you send in a well equipped army to remove the pirate government and reinstate a legitimate government, these problems will end. Lets see why this would be a better idea then these standoffs Rest of world | Somalia Well equiped | Cheap shit Well educated | Average person mentally ill or uneducated Well trained | Trained on a minimalistic level, only experienced in handling unarmed civilians Better organized | No real military chain of command, no leadership really. Strength in numbers | population well under 10 million equiped with up to date technology | Jack shit. _________________________________________________ There are more benefits to a full on assault then just waiting and letting Somalia continue their shit like this on the civilized world. To hell with this "Developing nation" bullshit, this is war. Survival of the damned fittest. If noone from NATO attacks, we are backing down and being weaker, basically giving the pirates an edge.
North Korea would've done it better.
I agree, the explosions would have been spectacular, so big you can feel the heat from a mile away. Yeah that's what happened the last time we tried that with somalia. I am of the personal opinion that we should just bomb every ship that illegitimately leaves the coast of somalia.
Yeah I'm sure companies love paying out money to pirates.
It's real bad PR for companies to not pay ransoms.
why doesn't anyone else have the balls to do this I think eight dead pirates is a better example to other would-be pirates than eight filthy rich ones
International maritime law dictates how countries operate on the high seas. Those eight dead pirates are accidents that are seriously frowned upon.
