• Can a charger break a laptop?

Hey so my laptop charger got twisted enough to break the plastic wrapping and some of the wire was exposed. This was a few centimetres away from the slot that plugs into the laptop From what I recall, I plugged in the charger and it sparked then my laptop died and the charger isn't being picked up. I ordered a replacement but it hasn't arrived My laptop is a Lenovo G50 and I tried my grandad's charger which is a Lenovo G505 but that wasn't being picked up either What are the odds my laptop is damaged and if so, what should I do from here? I know I should wait til the replacement charger arrives but I'm worried regardless Like I've aksed some friends but haven't got any definite replies but in trying to find the worst case scenario. If the charger I've ordered doesn't work, should I buy a battery replacement or look into ways to externally access the hard drive
Since the G50 and G505 chargers are functionally identical 20V chargers, if the (confirmed working) G505 charger isn't working for you then the new G50 charger probably won't either. If you have a multimeter lying around somewhere, you could check the output of the chargers by sticking one prong inside the charge plug and one side on the metal connector body. You could also try just taking out the battery and holding the power button for around 30 seconds to drain all the power-related components of the laptop (in case something tripped and needs to be reset), and plugging it into the G505 charger again. If that doesn't work and you can confirm that the G505 charger works, then your power-related circuitry on your motherboard's likely shot and it'd likely be cheaper to replace the laptop itself. (Data on the hard drive should be fine though)
Thank you so much for the reply! I opened the laptop up and took out the hard drive. I have a tablet with one USB port, and plugged it in via a sata cable. It made a whirring noise and the power was red but data green (the sata cable has two USB ports, apparently I need both but my tablet only has one port) I plan to buy one of those things that let you plug in multiple usbs into one since I remember the pound shop selling them I'm looking at the internal area near the charging port and noitced this: Kinda feels like it shouldn't be pointing up like that? Admittedly I don't know what I'm looking at but nothing else indicatrss a problem
Well, the reason that SATA adapter has two USB cords is because it requires power to the hard drive (which the tablet may have trouble supplying on one cord) - so a regular USB wall wart should also do to supply the required power to the other cord. An unpowered USB hub wouldn't do much because it'd still be trying to draw the power off the same port. Also, that thing sticking out is the little tab you pull on to get the display connector off, that's fine.
There is good reason to believe that that fucked your laptop. Luckily it would have input protection. Wait till you get the new charger in see if that powers it if it doesn't then you should take it to a local laptop repair shop for repair. Did it turn on via battery after the charger fucked off? Most of the time the laptop is fine. Try out a new charger. That connector is supposed to be like that.
I am not sure but if it charged for long time then this happen I think. Though I wasn't faced this ever. But I read a news about this. That a mobile is blusted for over charging. So should be careful.
