• RIP: Microsoft rumored to be axing Windows Live Messenger after 13 years in favor of Skype
Windows Live Messenger has been Microsoft’s IM client for the past 13 years. It has served the company well, but it might a little redundant now that Microsoft also owns Skype. It appears that Microsoft is thinking the same thing. Speaking to multiple sources, The Verge reports that Microsoft is axing its old Windows Live Messenger client in favor of Skype. The company will integrate Messenger into Skype to keep everybody on the same page. The move would follow the launch of Skype on Windows 8. The Skype app ties into the same Microsoft account used for Windows Live Messenger. It only makes sense to tie everything into a single account instead of forcing Messenger users to switch between different messaging clients. Skype represents a unified brand that Microsoft can tap into for Windows 8. The Verge says that Microsoft will announce the retirement of Windows Live Messenger before the end of the year. The announcement may even come this week if everything works out. It will mark the end of an era that was becoming increasingly obsolete over the years. The rise of SMS and other mobile messaging solutions has made sure that IM services aren’t used as much as they once were. Skype is unique as it provides all the services that the mobile communicator needs in a single service. The latest version even lets users log in to Skype via Facebook which could lead to even more adoption. We’ve reached out to Microsoft for comment, and will update if we hear back.
SOURCE
Well WLM integration is already in Skype so..woo?
Well I don't mind. I haven't used Messenger for years.
I kinda like being able to use WLM for irl friends and Skype for online people though, and having both clients open at once. Though I guess I could set up Pidgin or something for one of the accounts.
Nostalgia anyone?
people actually use this still?
Well, microsoft themselves murdered WLM by covering half of it with ads.

it broke for me a while ago so that's what stopped me using it, plus people seem to grow out of it when they're older.
I used to have a huge collection of "tongue" emoticons for msn. Havn't used it in years though, sometimes they message me when I'm on hotmail. Everyone I knew on it has stopped or become spam bots.
rip in piece 1999-2012 your annoying as fuck sounds will always remain in my ~heart~
I had a feeling this day was near, since no one uses MSN/WLM anymore. Most people just uses Facebook or Skype for IM nowadays.
Windows Live Messenger was honestly only better than skype in the mobile department.
Anyone remember this?
I switched to Skype a good few years ago. Never touched MSN since.
Owell, I use both anyway.
Anyone remember this?
Oh man I remember when I was 10 and my dad sent me that. I nearly shit myself :v:
People actually still use MLM? Damn.
MSN was great, but over the years it started breaking for me, in the end I had to stop using it because it wouldn't send specific safe links and some offline messages were never sent/received, plus it was a pain having to zip some files because it wouldn't send them for security reasons.
I still use MSN regularly. Messages get lost for me on Skype. I once received a message three weeks late...
Anyone remember this?
Is that supposed to be a gif or is that a jpg? I can't tell.
So long as they keep Skype where it's at now, instead of shoving it full of shit like the current WLM then I'm perfectly fine with that. I would hate to start using a-patch on Skype every update.
:( goodnight, sweet prince
I remember when people used to have as many emoticons as possible
I still regularly use MSN even if it's just to talk to one person
Is that supposed to be a gif or is that a jpg? I can't tell.
Right click image > Click info or similar based on browser > Look at type: JPEG Image

I still use msn through pidgin
Sooooo how do I import my MSN contacts in Skype then. I just merged my Microsoft account with my Skype account, but that doesn't seem to have magically added everyone.
