The number of migrants coming to Bulgaria threatens to tilt “the demographic balance” of the predominantly Slavic and Christian Orthodox country, its Prime Minister Boiko Borisov said Thursday (23 April).
“Bulgaria has regions with Muslim population. We have nothing against Muslims. But when more Muslims come from outside, they can abruptly change the demography of the country,” Borisov told reporters ahead of an extraordinary EU summit on migration on Thursday.

Although Bulgaria, unlike its Western Balkan neighbours, has sailed free of any ethnic bloodshed through its post-Communist transition, it is facing the challenge of radical Islamic preachers penetrating its normally moderate Sunni Muslim communities.
The country has seen a series of police operations and trials against such activists in the past couple of years.

It has a 259-kilometre land border with Turkey, where it is building a razor-wire fence to halt the surge in migrants after the beginning of the so-called Arab Spring in 2011.

Borisov said Bulgarian border police have been arresting up to 300 people a day on the land stretch at the frontier, and made explicit comparisons to Italy and Greece who see thousands of migrants arrive by sea each year.
“Is Italy under bigger pressure than Bulgaria? Bulgaria has the longest land border on the EU southern flank,” Borisov, a former senior policeman, argued.

“Satellites can intercept a ship in the sea. But come to see how hundreds of kilometers of land border are secured especially during the winter?”
Borisov quoted his security services as reporting that potential migrant pressure on Bulgaria could rise to between one and two million people a year trying to transit it on their way to central and western Europe.

“If just 100,000 manage to enter Bulgaria, we are done for,” he said. Since the beginning of 2014, around 12,000 asylum seekers have come to Bulgaria and 5,500 asylum requests have been granted.
The country, the poorest in the EU with 45 percent of its average per capita GDP, hosts some 4,000 people in refugee camps.
Borisov said asking for more EU funding for border operations amounted to underestimating the problem Europe was having with migration. He said the core causes of the crisis - failed states, terrorism and armed conflicts - should be tackled.
Berlin wall on roids could be considered :v:
More needs to be done to secure the EU border
"He said the core causes of the crisis - failed states, terrorism and armed conflicts - should be tackled."
I don't understand why more don't advocate for this. It's ridiculous when people want to stop immigration and then say resolving what causes it in the first place is "none of our business". Either help with problems in other countries or the hordes will keep coming, whether you want them or not.
It's good to see this outlook become more and more prevalent throughout Europe these days.
If a sovereign nation and its native people want to preserve their cultural/ethnic identity amidst changing demographics, then they should have every right to do so. There's no social or moral obligation or reason why you should have to become a minority in your own country, especially when the general consensus amongst you and your group agrees it's unfavorable-- for whatever reason.
Genocide/ethnic cleansing are not acceptable ways to do this however, and when you start doing what the Bosnian Serbs did to the Bosniaks and Croats, then that's when you're taking things too far, and you deserve to have your ass beaten for it.
[editline]24 April 2015[/editline]
I'm not accusing anyone here or trying to imply that the Bulgarians would resort to genocide and ethnic cleansing to preserve their country as it is today.
I bring it up because these arguments over restricting immigration, demanding cultural assimilation from non-native immigrants, etc. always seem to devolve into a fuckfest of accusations of racism, ultranationalism, and other such irrelevant bullshit that implies anyone who doesn't support the idea of open borders and is reluctant to accept droves of refugees and immigrants into their country is a Nazi.

Probably interference caused those issues in first place.

Perhaps if people such as yourself weren't so alarmist then there could be a genuine discussion. But when you say things that are so absurd like...

...it's difficult to think you can actually be reasoned with.

lol but that was interference that ended 75-100 years ago that caused it
you can't just expect it to fix itself if we leave them to their own devices

Im reffering to the mess in Libya and Iraq.
That wasnt too long ago
If it were up to me, I would wait till the dust settles and invade, but conquest isn't look highly upon.....
That and left to themselves, they can't blame outsiders. It be their own fault and have to own up to it.

This is the ultimate solution to immigration problems - many forget that immigration doesn't just impact the country people are migrating to but also hugely impacts the country they have left behind.

That is an uncharacteristically honest and truthful answer coming from a politician.
Now get Texas and Arizona in the US to say the same thing about mexico
Would it be an unpopular opinion if I were to say the US should invade Mexico and make it a territory?

How is wanting to preserve your own culture, and being opposed to getting swamped with immigrants that refuse to integrate a difficult concept to grasp?
How is wanting to preserve your own culture, and being opposed to getting swamped with immigrants that refuse to integrate a difficult concept to grasp?
It's not, but peddling the idea that native populations are going to become the minority due to general immigration is just scare mongering and helps to create an unhealthy resentment towards immigrants.

It's a realistic prospect, one needs only to look at the number of children immigrants tend to have compared to the native population.
Demographics, yo.

Only if you assume that the population growth will continue to grow or sustain forever, which isn't going to happen.

I remember one of my professors, that worked few years in Germany, complaining how only Turks still make children there :v:

Open your eyes man, there are already entire city quarters and schools with immigrant majorities, just extrapolate those trends and in a few decades it will be a reality.
They don't need to continue having more children then we do forever, only until they have outbred us for this scenario to become real.
It's happening because people forgot how to "un-fail" a state somewhere in the 1700's. You can't do that shit soft-handed

What's worse, doing something bad and then walking away, or doing something bad and then trying to fix it?
If we caused these messes, we should be at least trying to solve them. Air strikes don't fix a war-torn country, but they get votes.

I plan on having at least 3 children, thank you. Just because the West is falling doesn't absolve me of my responsibility to be the model of an ideal European man.
Also, I'm a monarchist, with Rexist tendencies.

Because of the treaties following the 30 years war, with, among other things, included the concept of national sovereignty.
Ergo, no one can invade and unfuck a country anymore (at least not officially), even if it would be for the better.

A rexist is about as fucking close to a nazi you can get without actually being it though.
Also its not the foreigners thats the problem, theyre just as capable as other humans, problem is their cultural mindset is decades past obsolete.

No, the issue is their refusal to integrate, and instead opting to create their own mirror images of their native cultures in the heart of German cities.
Also, I really want to hear the justification of letting unskilled labourers immigrate when such high unemployment still exists within.
I doubt they will stay there for long though.

Extrapolation is very sensitive to initial conditions, in the US they extrapolated that crime rates in the 80s would lead to complete anarchy by 1995, but it didn't and crime rates started falling. Extrapolation is if things remain the same, as if Syria is going to be having a genocidal civil war for the next 40 years

Why is one of the ban reasons supporting Fascism?
Why is one of the ban reasons supporting Fascism?
Because fascism is just a tiny little bit bad?
Why is one of the ban reasons supporting Fascism?
because fp has no freedom of speech and fascists are universally huge nutbars. especially ones who talk about invading other countries to "unfuck" their immigration situation a la Nazist New Order

Look up rexism
