For any of you upcoming designers, artists and just general creative folk. I just wanted to let you know about Deviant Art's new portfolios function. i myself only found it today, and i think it'll be useful for the future. To make one, just sign up at DA, then go to portfolios. This can help, if like me, you want to get into freelancing and want a free portfolio. I'm sorry but they're both quite horrible. Yours look like some primary art class examples and your friends logos aren't appealing. Atleast they're not overloaded. The only thing I like is the first image in your friends Other PS Work section. It's a nice collage. The rest is pretty much bad.

They're both ok. The logos aren't that great, they're too busy and unoriginal. The way you didn't space some words makes it a bit too difficult to read. Logos should be as simple as possible while being easy to read and identify.

If you throw something together with no concern as to how it looks, you're not doing the world justice in the eyes of the people who care to see it. So start caring: design IS aesthetics.

Good information on a product, it's functions and abilities or making a presentation all fancy with colours.
Are you asking what is more effective in advertising? Are you REALLY asking that?
i said that much aesthetic appeal, and what's better. good information on a product, it's functions and abilities. or making a presentation all fancy with colours.
you need to take some technical communication classes...
you need to take some technical communication classes...
apologies, i'm typing quick and my punctuation is flabbergasting.
apologies, i'm typing quick and my punctuation is flabbergasting.
Hmm... technical communication isn't just about grammar; technical communication is about how you deliver your message to your audience. This includes, not limited to, grammar, design, rhetorical situations, and costs.
Are you asking what is more effective in advertising? Are you REALLY asking that?
no, i'm asking which is more needed for a presentation to peers and teachers not marketing because that has a blatent answer.
Hmm... technical communication isn't just about grammar; technical communication is about how you deliver your message to your audience. I don't see what the point in arguing is. Its fact that the portfolio is boring, it lacks any type of detail, and it looks like typical school work. The point of a portfolio is to show your best work and your overall creativity. In fact if there is one thing you want to do awesome in, it would be putting together a portfolio. A portfolio is the very thing an employer for example would look at and make his overall decision on.
no, i'm asking which is more needed for a presentation to peers and teachers not marketing because that has a blatent answer. that pretty much fits under product design in my school.
Then I have to say that your school can't prepare you well enough for occupations. Portfolio, webpage, letters, memo, e-mail, ads, resume, game, cover letter, poster, and gazillion things are all forms of technical communication. Basically anything that you are not hanging in for just your prof or teacher (like research paper or essay)
I own the second portfolio, i just put my work in there, i don't know what this argument is about.
i said that much aesthetic appeal, and what's better? Good information on a product, it's functions and abilities or making a presentation all fancy with colours.
What is better, and indeed best, is the unity of each: form AND function. A portfolio is a portfolio, and substandard is substandard, whether you present yourself to us or your teachers, or an interviewer. Trying to justify substandard and merely-adequate work based upon your target audience is voluntary blindness, regardless of how generously your work is graded. An A for substandard work means only that the judge rewards mediocrity.
Indeed. Hence, the argument started because he argued for only two options: either one or another, absolute.
Well hey, i see sense now. Rather a combination of both, instead of just one. and it wasn't really an argument, because i don't feel i was disagreeing with any of your answers.
Huh cool, I was just thinking to myself today I need to get a portfolio up for college. I could even use this for people around town so I can get some smaller jobs and pay rent. Thanks for posting this. Here's mine. Nothing too impressive so far, just wanted a little content to start off with.
