DLC" has come to be an almost "dirty word" in the gaming industry, because while there are quite a few developers who use it responsibly, with appropriately priced expansion packs, there are way too many "wolf skins" that can leave a sour taste in gamer's mouths. However, Ubisoft VP of digital publishing Chris Early does not think this is the case, and says that most games have come to accept DLC, and certainly don't resist it like they used to.
Early, talking to Games Industry, about Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag's "Time saver" DLC packs (which unlock resources and hidden locations in the game you can also earn through normal play), said that there the packs faced very little resistance from players. "There was no resistance," he said. "Maybe there were 12 guys somewhere who said something, but whatever. As a whole, there wasn't a problem."
In the past, gamers would complain that such "shortcut" DLC packs used to be available as free cheat codes, but Early says that those days are over as gamers have come to embrace their nickle-and-dime overlords.
"I think there are some models that are accepted now," Early said. "DLC is pretty much accepted. Season pass is pretty much accepted. Now it's interesting when you start to think of Season Pass as a Service Pass. For our Season Pass holders, I know we hold events for them specifically, so it's little bit more than just DLC content. So there's an evolution going on there."

My thoughts on the subject can be summed up by a tweet Jim Sterling put out:

remember when they said this

DLC is "accepted" because we can't do anything about it.
remove dlcs, for real. and give us back big expansion packs like blizzard do em.
DLC is "accepted" because we can't do anything about it.
Not really. It is acceptable because people spend tons of money on them. As long as they profit from making dlc, it will be acceptable. Which also means there's high enough demand.
I will now view everything they release as DLC.
I have done so with Ass Creed for a long time anyway so...
Accepted? Yes. We'll still scrutinize the fuck out of it before buying it but it's pretty much accepted at this point.
Season passes however have a LOOOOONG way to go.

yea an evolution in your fucking wallet more like
DLCs are generally pure shit and remind me of the cesspit that is the mobile gaming market. Low effort money grabs aimed towards children.
Even Battlefield was tainted by pay-to-win bullshit. BC 2 Vietnam was the only good DLC I can even think of.
DLC is so dumb these days. I wish there were more expansion packs; something that adds 10+ hours of new content to the core game. But these days, it's mostly weapon packs, character clothes, or skins (which should have been in the vanilla game from the start).

10+ hours of new stuff begs for a sequel.
Well duh. Seeing as a portion of the audience that plays games now a days are unaware that "time saver" DLCs used to be free in game button push codes and all. And how most companies don't release level editors so people will pay $15 for maps from last year with a single variable changed so it runs on this years version. And since they have "lives", of course they'll buy the balance breaking stuff for multiplayer that gives top tier stuff without a level restriction. Its like saying how everyone loves eating dog shit when not only is it the only thing available, but a majority have never known any other food.
Not saying all DLC is bad mind you, it just pisses me off that its another narcissist "WE DID IT PERFECT thing from freakin' Ubisoft.
You know what's an example of good DLC? Fallout: New Vegas. All of that DLC was good. But I'm sick of all this DLC they're pumping out nowadays for games like Saints Row, Call of Duty, Battlefield, and the sort.
If you want to save time, why not use a trainer or something? At least on PC
Last expansion pack that I've seen was Dark Arisen for Dragon's Dogma which added loads of new content to the game.
I buy DLC. I buy almost all DLC for games I got, unless I really hate the base game. I love DLC. Sure, it's shitty business practice. Sure, it's overpriced. But I love getting more content for my games, so fuck the police. I know I'm the problem here, I just don't care.
[sp]Still don't get day-1 DLC, and generally avoid games that has day-1 DLC.[/sp]
If developers wanted to go for high cost addons, why not go for the standalone route. Having a larger market available seems like a much more advantageous route, they can argue the price because you don't need the base game and that they need to subsidize that, and there's more honesty towards the consumer. Even if there are day1 releases for different standalones, it has been proven people buy that shit and are happy with it. Look at pokemon. It also worked great for valve, allowing gearbox to make Blueshift/Op4 and not need halflife to play them.

Another great example
Last expansion pack that I've seen was Dark Arisen for Dragon's Dogma which added loads of new content to the game.
That isn't an expansion. It's a re-release. You can't buy it as DLC for the original game
You know what's an example of good DLC? Fallout: New Vegas. All of that DLC was good. But I'm sick of all this DLC they're pumping out nowadays for games like Saints Row, Call of Duty, Battlefield, and the sort.
Battlefield DLC isn't all that bad. They are mini expansions, new maps, weapons, gamemodes, vehicles, etc. CoD was pushing it a bit charging more for just 4 maps, but now they've gone full retard with weapon packs, skin packs (oh man I totally want those bacon reticules lol!!!), snopp doggidy dog VO pack, etc.
It's all well and good for people to keep saying "man bring back expansions", but if you're downloading them, they're DLC anyway. DLC covers ALL extra content you download, this is why it's largely accepted. In amongst the shit tons of skin packs and awful weapons for games are still decent value expansions.
I'm currently playing through Dishonored's DLC and I have to agree with Ubisoft. I like DLC, only if it's done right though.
Payday 2 is probably a great example of awful DLC actually. The DLC heists are really cool, but all the Gage weapon packs do is limit your fun until you spend the ~£3.99 on a couple of weapons and mods for weapons. They really need to add some free weapons to the DLC only categories to let people play around with the weapon classes more before committing.
I enjoy expansions much more than DLC. Most notably in my memory was BF1942 expansions, and Medal of Honor: Spearhead and Breakthrough.
Killing Floor was a shining example of great DLCs, when it was all about playermodels and weapon skins, it was really saddening when they started pumping out DLCs for weapons with different stats, thankfully they're not endgame weapons and only serve as midgame alternatives, but it's still very disappointing.
Even if the game is awesome, it's a big ugly spot.
Personally I judge if DLCs are worth or it scummy depending on the game a developper release them for, I mean, the only similarities between some DLCs is sometimes the name.
Obligatory.

XCom: Enemy Within is a good example of a modern expansion-through-DLC, in my opinion. It adds a ton of content, and is fairly reasonably priced I feel, for the amount of content it adds. Especially when you buy it on sale. :v:
Ubisoft isn't completely wrong.
Horse Armor got laughed out the door when Bethesda did it 8 years ago and now similar pre-order only cosmetic DLC is now viewed as a lesser evil compared to DLC that fucks with the core mechanics. The trend is shifting towards acceptance in the vocal core, who is the only group that's ever disliked DLC. Look in this very thread, people are fine with DLC so long as it's good and it brings enough content to justify the purchase price.
And that's just the tiny minority of gamers who care enough to post on something like Facepunch or Neogaf. The silent majority who buys every Assassin's Creed every year didn't care, doesn't care, and will continue to not care about the EVILS of DLC.

That's actually meaningful dlc, not bullshit to color your gun, or a couple of dollars for a 30 min mission
I enjoy expansions much more than DLC. Most notably in my memory was BF1942 expansions, and Medal of Honor: Spearhead and Breakthrough.
MoH actually had the best expansions, they offered a lot both sp and mp if I remember correctly. It also kept the game alive to this day, with game servers still getting around 30 players at times. This was when EA was at it's prime and was probably one of the most liked game devs.
yea an evolution in your fucking wallet more like
An evolution? More like a Mass Extinction for most.
10+ hours of new stuff begs for a sequel.
Not really, some people like the base game and adding an expansion pack is seen as the better option.
10+ hours of new stuff begs for a sequel.
Except a sequel calls for a high amount of marketing and funding. DLC is a way to make some money without putting up the effort and risk that a sequel needs.
