China's first lunar rover, Yutu, has officially been declared lost.
The English-language website of the state-owned China News Service reported Wednesday that Yutu "could not be restored to full function Monday as expected and netizens mourned it on Weibo, China's Twitter-like service."
The six-wheeled, solar-powered moon buggy, whose name translates to "Jade Rabbit" in Chinese, hasn't been working since Jan. 25, when it experienced mechanical problems. The problems appeared to be related to the probe's process for shutting down for the lunar night, which lasts more than two weeks and brings the surface temperature down to –180 C.
Made in China™
it's probably analyzing and taking photos of rover heaven with Spirit and Mars 2 now
"I-I love you rover!"
"y-yutu"

I'd rather see China mess up a moon landing than not attempt it at all.

Shame the thing failed. Hopefully they'll attempt another.

yeah you look at that rover and u KNOW that nobody who built it had PRIDE
thats why i buy all my computer parts from nasa
Well as a tech-demonstrator I'd say it was rather successful, they managed to land the lander + rover on first attempt and while the rover did not last as long as the 3 month planned, they still got round a month out of it. At least the lander is still operational and will keep doing science.
The next moon rover will likely be launched on 2015.
Actually, the "situation is getting better":

Challenger and Columbia. Challenger exploded a minute after launch because of a faulty O-ring. You cant prepare for that. Columbia fell apart upon re-entry because a piece of foam came off during launch and damaged the left wing. On re-entry the wing overheated causing a catastrophic failure.
Its not like the shuttle went to the dark side of the earth and fucking froze and never regained power.
I hope their rover recovers and finishes the mission
This is their first Moon rover, it's still quite an achievement to even land it and gather some data. In the end, China proved they could reach the mun and got some data to boot.
The link that Swebonny posted has updated -- apparently the rover is still transmitting (so it's still alive)!

Wow, way to make a joke about a robot failing and making it about multiple people who lost their lives in an attempt to make contributions to science! Really good zinger man, A+.

human error and material failure leading to death = a rover made out of shitty material.
that's pretty damn low, bro.

In fairness, the Challenger explosion could've been prevented, as many engineers expressed concern over the conditions at the scheduled launch time and the problems that could arise.
Don't they ever learn? If you want something done you do it the murrican way! Which means spending a surplus of money to middle finger another country.
