I didn't come up with it, but I agree with how it can be seen that way. Facebook's newsfeed relayed me this information.
Was this officially used or did it just get removed from the official 2012 website?

There are many variations of the logo itself. I don't know if the one on the Facebook page is truly one that was used, but some of the others throughout the site bear a striking resemblance regardless.
