IOC leaders dropped wrestling from the Olympic program on Tuesday, a surprise decision that removes one of the oldest Olympic sports from the 2020 Games. The IOC executive board decided to retain modern pentathlon — the event considered most at risk — and remove wrestling instead from its list of 25 "core sports."
The IOC board acted after reviewing the 26 sports on the current Olympic program. Eliminating one sport allows the International Olympic Committee to add a new sport to the program later this year.
Wrestling, which combines freestyle and Greco-Roman events, goes back to the inaugural modern Olympics in Athens in 1896.
"This is a process of renewing and renovating the program for the Olympics," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said. "In the view of the executive board, this was the best program for the Olympic Games in 2020. It's not a case of what's wrong with wrestling, it is what's right with the 25 core sports."
For some reason my hopes for Olympic Ultimate Frisbee just faded a little....
Wrestling is one the most Olympic sports out there. I don't see the logic behind this.
Why does there have to be 25 core sports?
So this means no more wrestling at the Olympics?
Why would they drop wrestling, one of the original Olympic sports, and not some bullshit 'sport' like rhythmic gymnastics or that synchronised swimming crap?

That should go.
Personally, I think any sport that is based on a judge determining whose the winner, rather than something measurable, should be dropped
Quite frankly, everything associated with wrestling today leads to the WWE. And since all they've been doing is sensationalizing the sport, making it comic "family-friendly entertainment," it's no surprise that real sports institutions would shy away. It's a shame for the original Olympic sport.

Could you be any more wrong?
No one is shying away from Wrestling because of it's common association with the WWE if anything professional wrestling has made wrestling stronger then it has ever been.

A lot of wrestlers have and are going onto successful careers in MMA.

Boxing?
Boxing?
It has clearly defined rules and points - the winner isn't determined by someone saying 'that guy hit the other guy more times'.
More room for squash to be added, I suppose.
Vote Squash, 2020.
All of the equestrian events should be removed instead. Why should the little bloke get the medal when the horse did all the work?

Any "Sport" that is based on a judge determining the winner instead of a point system or anything akin to that isn't a sport and should not be called a sport, but a fashion show.
How the fuck did this shit get into Olympics, and now they throw out Wrestling, the very backbone since ancient times.
All of the equestrian events should be removed instead. Why should the little bloke get the medal when the horse did all the work?
Not exactly, training a horse to do all that stuff is hard work. I always thought that the medal is for both the guy and his horse. Except the horse doesn't give a fuck

I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic.
They oughta get rid of BMX before Wrestling.

You obviously didn't watch any matches last summer. It was a fucking joke. The judges didn't know what the fuck they were doing, and no one else did either. It's been like that for a long time, and FILA (international wrestling federation) has promised to change it - hasn't happened, so now they're getting the boot.
Literally removing the single oldest Olympic sport from the Olympics, just sounds completely irrational and stupid I can't believe it.

I award the IOC no points, and may God have mercy on their souls.

A lot of events are determined with judges such as synchronized driving so its up to the judge i think something you can determine 100% is good to have such as wrestling.
They oughta get rid of BMX before Wrestling.
I always thought it was weird that BMX is the only "Action Sport" in the summer Olympics, Xgames have proven that they are substantial crowd bringer, not to mention a good chunk of the Winter Olympics are also present in the Xgames.
Then again I'm pretty against Action sports in the Olympics anyways because it puts the focus on winning and not having fun, but personally I think there should be no limit to core sports as long as they meet the requirements and people will watch them.

The limit has to be there. It would be impossible to hold the Olympic games with 50+ sports.
Well if wrestling's gotta go, at least replace it with fucking mixed martial arts or something, not more of the same boring-ass shit that makes up most of the Summer Olympics nowadays..
Seriously, NO ONE gives a shit about stuff like synchronized swimming and horse riding "sports"...
All in all, the summer olympics just... suck. The winter olympics have a lot more sports that are actually entertaining to watch; hockey, snowboarding, ski jumping...
Why would they drop wrestling, one of the original Olympic sports, and not some bullshit 'sport' like rhythmic gymnastics or that synchronised swimming crap?
Because more people watch 13 year old girls twirl ribbons, than actual sports like wrestling.
[editline]12th February 2013[/editline]
it's all about the ratings.
The board voted after reviewing a report by the IOC program commission report that analyzed 39 criteria, including television ratings, ticket sales, anti-doping policy and global participation and popularity.
Actually that wasn't the reason. They clearly said that the only reason it's being removed is low TV ratings and poor ticket sales. Want to throw out a corrupt sport? throw out boxing. Did you even watch any of the 2012 boxing matches? Half of them were fixed. Or how about the non-sports like equestrianism or rhythmic and artistic gymnastics or BMX or shooting?
Good now we can get more coverage on ping pong and speed walking.

Hey now, don't hate on olympic ping pong. That shit's intense.

Wrestling would be far more interesting if you took out the uniforms, those thing look incredibly stupid. I agree they shouldn't do this though, get rid of a worthless sport no one cares about. How about the horse triathlon, or solo synchronized swimming.
