A Brisbane IT worker has been sacked just before Christmas because he came to work with a mohawk.
Cameron Fowles said he thought his new hairdo would bring some festive cheer to the office.
"I thought something bright and cheery would go down well and make everyone smile," he told Nine News Brisbane.
"Unfortunately when I walked into work on Monday there were a few people who didn't think it was appropriate and it turned into a bit of a storm."
Mr Fowles' said his employer, the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC), told him to shave off his bright red spike or face immediate dismissal.
"I'm not willing to go bald for your job," he says he replied.
He offered a compromise: bleaching his mohawk pink and flattening the style. But QTAC did not budge.
"There's no mention of hair in the dress code — it's just what you wear," Mr Fowles, who works in QTAC's Brisbane branch, said.
QTAC declined to comment, saying employment matters are confidential.
Australia just banned Mohawks.
:10bux: says there's more to the story.
lolqueensland
what kind of ass complains about someones hair?
If there isn't any more to the story, the employer is the biggest douche on the planet.

Probably more to it. He probably called the boss a fucktard or something.
Pfft, that company is just splitting hairs...
Why do I have the feeling he knew in advanced they were going to fire him so he went to work with a fucked up hairdew to get news attention?
No employer with any kind of money would sack some one like that, something else obviously happened.

You can't just assume something else happened without proof. Until we get another article we can only base our posts on what's there.
I guess the Employer was Bald.
I suppose some companies have issues with more radical personal statements like a mohawk. Retail department where I work don't allow you to roll up your sleeves if you have visible tattoos. Of course, if this guy is an IT worker, he wouldn't be in the public eye much.
am i the only one who doesn't think they were unreasonable for firing him for having a mohawlk.
I'm pretty sure most businesses don't employ people with hairstyles like that.

I don't think employers have any business enforcing dress codes that stay in effect after the person leaves their property. Clothes/uniforms/"tie your hair back/remove piercings"/shit like that is fine.

Actors sometimes have to stay in character even when they're not on set, I'm pretty sure the trailer park boys are like this.
But yeah, regular employers wouldn't.
Getting a haircut like that in an IT office is quite a bald statement...

Many do though.
who complains about a fucking red mohawk at christmas are you kidding me
like the employer's concern about professionalism sure I can understand that but fellow employees? really??
Many do though.
They force people to stay in accordance to the dress code even when they're not at work?
Mohawks are now censored..
:10bux: says there's more to the story.
Otherwise this would be completely unacceptable.

But while at work an employer can most defiantly regulate your hairstyle.
But while at work an employer can most defiantly regulate your hairstyle.
Not in all cases, not in all countries. But even if he was well within his rights to fire him, it's just absolutely wrong.

Stuff like making people cut their hair remains in affect after they leave.

Yes but it's in accordance with the dress code at work.
That might also have to do with the atmosphere of the work environment - you probably wouldn't buy a house from someone with a mohawk.
It's really up to the employer how it is. Obviously it's "better for business" in their mind, even though in reality, it really fucking isn't.
[editline]22nd December 2010[/editline]
This just comes down to the "appearance of legitimacy" versus actually being legitimate, it's bullshit. Someones outward appearance doesn't dictate how good they are at their job, but it's still up to the employer, it's just that employers should be less stupid.

There are lots of people who wouldn't buy a house from a black man but their opinion isn't given legitimacy.
And yeah, I would. If they were a good salesman and the house was what I wanted.

To be fair I have a mohawk and I was fully expecting my work to tell me to keep it flat while at work or even shave it off (luckily they did neither). I can understand from a business point of view that they have to keep the company's image looking good, for which reason when I finish university and get a full time job I'll shave mine off too.

Employers making you shave your hair or whatever is kind of like vandalism.
I mean, if you don't like the length of your neighbour's hedges you can't just go over and make him cut them

No but an employer has no obligation to employ you so you better do as they say, it's not fair and I agree so, especially seeing as I have 3 large piercings and a mohawk but then it's life, bitching about it won't solve it.
