hey Facepunch so i built a PC with the following specs a few months ago Antec 400w psu (from old PC) AMD phenom x6 1tb HDD http://bit.ly/c1f3Nz this Mobo 4gb ddr3 1600 ram EVGA gts 250 1gb i also bought windows 7 home edition and installed it and everything worked fine for about a month then one day, after a windows update, the PC started and freeze up often and lagged audio to an unusable point this has happened 3 separate times i have tried updating bios and all of my drivers but nothing has worked, now im running off win XP pro (msdn dev license) and i am having no problems (no problems on ubuntu either) anyone know what could be causing this?
Virus/ bad update/overheating. Try to format again to Windows 7. If problem doesnt occours before it updates then just turn updating off.
both NOD32 and avast detect no virus so im guessing its a bad update cuz speccy is showing below 50c on all my components
Format and turn off auto-updates. They suck anyways. And nod and avast suck too. You should read this. http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?948262-Antiviruses-and-You-%28aka-read-this-shit-because-a-lot-of-you-are-clueless%29
k ill try that but i dont think ill ever get rid of XP its like that pair of pant that no matter how old you get always fits just right XD but i will need directx11 after i upgrade mt GPU
Windows 7 is shit anyways. I use Ubuntu/XP dualboot. XP never fails. Never.
Your hard drive could be failing, frequent freezing is often caused by a dieing drive since the drive struggles to spin the disks/move the spindle to read data from different parts of the disk. Is there any clunking/screeching/whining noises coming from your computer? Other than a medium-volume even hum, which is normal.
my hard drive seems to be acting normal and like i said its working fine on ubuntu and XP so im guessing its not a hardware problem
How about you atleast get a PSU that can support your hardware specs?
I had a problem with my windows freezing. I discovered it was a software incompatibility, since i just had installed a new driver for a webcam. So if you recently installed some new things just get rid of them.
