One of the boxes of The Ledge, the 103rd floor tourist attraction atop Chicago's Willis Tower, appeared to show cracks Wednesday night, but a building official said what was damaged was a protective layer on the glass and that there was no danger to visitors.Alejandro Garibay, his brother, and two cousins were in the glass enclosure that juts out of the west side of the building shortly before 10 p.m. when Garibay said they heard cracking. "Crazy feeling and experience," Garibay wrote in an email to NBC Chicago. Watch the NBC 5 NEWS at NOON to hear Garibay’s experience first-hand. Brian Rehme, a spokesman for public relations firm FleishmanHillard, said that what cracked was a protective coating on the glass structure and not the glass itself. "This coating does not affect the structural integrity of The Ledge in any way. Occasionally, the coating will crack, as it is designed to in order to protect the surface of the glass," Rehme said in a statement. The attraction remained open Thursday with the cracked portion reportedly covered with a piece of carpet. Still, it was a frightening experience for the family members visiting from California. Garibay said he and others were joking with staff about the strength of the boxes even before his group walked out into one of the boxes."They jokingly and confidently responded, 'It's unbreakable,' so we just went on," said Garibay. Regardless if someone told me it was safe.
Good to know we have break away glass, wouldn't want to be unsafe.
NOPE.
Glad the title says Sears tower, I will never ever call it the Willis tower
Fuck. That.

Jesus christ just looking at that picture makes me sick. If it cracked while I was there, the bricks I would shit would finish it off.
I'm just waiting for an employee to go "Sure it's safe! Let me show you!" and just fall straight through.
I would be the asshole that runs onto the balcony and starts jumping on it while the few brave people who have the balls to stand on the cracked glass stood there.
Those black spots on the cracked glass look like liquid, did the guy on the right piss himself? Wouldn't blame him if he did to be honest.
God, fuck that. I have severe acrophobia, I have problems just looking outside when I'm 10 stories up, - hell, I have problems just knowing I'm 10 stories up - there's no way in fuck I would come within ten feet of that thing. The shattered glass would just make me avoid it even more, even if it is a protective layer.

So now that they do not have a protective layer, it is easier to break through? I don't get it. If it was strong enough in the first place, why consider a protective layer? I also like how employment are just like, "Should we replace the protective layer?" "Nah the lawsuits cheaper than the repairs, help me with this carpet."
even without the broken glass you'd have to give me a harness & a parachute to get me in there

Wait, so are they saying the protective layer was there to protect just normal glass or another protective layer? Because if the second layer is just normal glass, fuck that shit. Also if it is a second protective glass layer, what happens if over time that layer becomes weakened from the first layer breaking? I really hope they will replace it periodically over time before that breaks too, right? FUCK THAT SHIT.
Haha, shit. I went out on those with some persuading from my parents. My cousin even laid down in it. Scariest shit ever.

It's specially made and treated. They use the same stuff for the glass bottom platform over the Grand Canyon. Probably similar stuff used for glass bottom boats, too.
At least the guys were cool about it afterwards rather than trying to sue for psychological trauma or whatever.
The engineers on both ends of this balcony know what they're doing, it's plenty safe to walk on.
I WOULD ABSOLUTELY SHIT MYSELF
The glass on that ledge is over 3 times thicker than the glass in the Alvin submarine, and that thing has gone to 21,000 feet below the surface of the water. I don't think it'll break. Could you imagine the practical jokes you could pull on people with the protective layer, though? A hidden camera show and sheets of glass that break on command
Couldn't get me near that fuckin thing, broken glass or not. I was in the CN tower once and I decided to slowly shuffle onto one of the exposed floor windows. My face immediately went flush and I felt like passing out.
I would be the asshole that runs onto the balcony and starts jumping on it while the few brave people who have the balls to stand on the cracked glass stood there.
Go right to hell. This is literally my worst fear.

AHHH this is hilarious. I'm going with GF's fam to chicago next week, and I said I'd stand on that thing after GF's mom mentioned it. GF said "if you make one smartass comment regarding that ledge I'm going to hit you" First words out of my mouth? 'Hey do you hear that cracking?' -smacksmacksmacksmack-
