Syrian rebels' infighting plays into Assad's hands
Moderate and jihadi groups have for months battled together in the attempt to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad's regime. But in recent weeks, infighting amongst opposition groups has become more frequent. The clashes among Assad opponents have intensified in the wake of the recent killing of a leading Free Syrian Army (FSA) commander by a jihadist group. The FSA said Kamal Hamami, a member of the opposition's Supreme Military Command, was shot dead by al-Qaeda militants in the coastal province of Latakia.
Hamami's killing follows rising tensions over the past year between moderate-secular and extremist jihadist fighters in Syria who share the one goal of ousting Assad - but have different long-term objectives.
Rather than a "singular movement working in unity to overthrow President Assad," wrote the US-based non-profit think tank Center for American Progress in a May 2013 report called 'The structure and organization of the Syrian opposition', "the Syrian armed rebellion […] is more accurately described as an array of ideologically diverse and uncoordinated brigades and battalions with limited areas of operation."
Well we are still helping Mali deal with Islamic militants so im assuming the US government has put some thought into this before arming the rebels.
If I was Syrian I would of gotten asylum by now, all that will remain is rubble and ruin by the end of this war so there's not much to fight for.
Welp.
I hope Assad enjoys ruling a nation of cripples and bullet-riddled, bombed out apartment complexes.

and mass graves, don't forget the mass graves
The fact that people think assad is the problem makes me laugh. As soon as he is gone they will start killing eachother.
The fact that people think assad is the problem makes me laugh. As soon as he is gone they will start killing eachother.
Considering he started the whole war by slaughtering protestors, he's a pretty fucking big problem. Or have you already forgotten?
^^
Would still rather have Assad than some Radical Islamist.

They're all radical Islamists. The only difference is one group is willing to give us cheap oil and the other one isn't. So the media is making it out that one group is made up of pure, evil chemical-using terrorists, while the other group is made up of amicable, slightly backwards peasants fighting for Freedom And Democracy.
The country is going to burn to the ground.

Gotta get all that Syrian oil

Some people don't have the mental capacity to hold both side's crimes at once, so they just default to hating whomever the US is currently supporting.
This will keep on going from bad to even worse, and sending weapons to whoever there is doubtfully going to help.
There's only so much you can do without outright invading the country. And at this point possibilities are pretty much all spent.

Assad is a DAMN big part of the problem. You think, by winning this war, he's just gonna magically stop persecuting and slaughtering his own people? There are no "good guys" in this war anymore.

Umm, some people were against the rebels before the US started supporting them.
And I'm pretty sure that, no matter which side they would've taken, people would've frowned upon the decision anyways.
Better to support nobody than to bring guilt upon yourself by supporting a lost cause.

People killing each other in Syria? That's unthinkable, I'm glad Assad is there to prevent it

He's a problem, but compared to the rebels, He's a hell of a lot better and not a complete threat to the whole region.

How can you tell? For me, it looks like Syria's turning into one huge Free-for-all where nobody is better than the other.
He's a problem, but compared to the rebels, He's a hell of a lot better and not a complete threat to the whole region.
He is the sole reason they turned to armed conflict, and it's his army's tactics that further radicalise people and entice islamists from the entire region. Those islamists are not going to disappear if the rebels are crushed and their supporters rounded up and executed; they'll continue murdering and bombing, much as how the Taliban are still alive and kicking after all this time.
He is part of the reason the region has become more unstable.

And yet he hasn't started any wars with an outside nation that continues to attack it.
When a revolutionary government takes over and has the means to defend themselves, they spread out and attack those who they can pick on.

So far the Libyans haven't turned into a marauding band of freedom-bringers, so tbh I see that eventuality of an expansionist revolutionary government less likely than the spread of radical islamists that Assad's methods have given new life.
Simply letting Assad win outright will mean instability for the region for quite a while, not to mention the reprisals of the sort his father pioneered. It has to be a negotiated settlement where the radicals are kept to the side, and for that the rebels need to be just strong enough to be able to completely reject them without leading to total collapse. Easier said than done, though.

Just because I think Assad is the lesser of two evils means I'm dumb. Ok, well that's just like, your opinion man.
But hey who cares right? Let's just make that part of the world even more fucked up and promote more secular warfare.
Assad is a horrible leader and should be tried for crimes against humanity, but that should happen after the fighting ends. The way this is heading it can only mean more death and destruction for Syria.
Wow, I thought they'd at least be able to hold their shit together long enough to finish off Assad, but it doesn't look like that will be the case.
I thought we all agreed that Syria is fucked nomatter what happens at this point, and there's absolutely nothing anybody can do about it.
