This is my first prop replica attempt ive enjoyed seeing what others have done just through the use of cheap materials picked up from wherever and I thought I would try my hand at it. I picked up some cheap materials from a store here called "Hot Dollar" I already had a bit of old electronics and other junk here I could scrap for parts also. I thought I could use the snow globes as the lenses, the frame as well.... the frame, and the cable tie for the knurling on the lens. However I found these snow globes are ridiculously brittle once you remove the water and they simply crumbled in my hands so for the glass I went back and bought the following, after some cutting of the photo frame and cannibalism of an old cd player I had the basic shape and speaker. Now onto the lense, I had various sized rings and more parts from the cd player to plunder after which I had my lense roughly mocked up! here it is glued together (cable tie cut to size and glued) ready for paint. All parts painted and loosely put together so you could get an idea of the finished product, I used a gloss black spray paint on the lens, matte black on the body, silver on the trim and finally flat 50% grey on the speaker grill. I salvaged a red LED from a old PC case then glued him all together. ...dave....... Things to do/fix: Print out the decals (HAL 9000 logo and Nikkor lense details) Putty corners where it does not fit exactly re-paint speaker grill (I got silver on it :doh) Make a display box
You should find a way to diffuse the red light a bit, other than that it looks awesome. Why do you feel it needs a display box? It looks neat hanging from the wall like it's the real thing.
Really neat. I do agree with latin_geek, it looks really good hanging on the wall like that.
