In an interview Wednesday with the Washington Post, President-elect Donald Trump was asked just exactly how he plans to make good on his promise to make America great again. One potential he floated to the Post‘s Karen Tumulty: military parades in DC and New York showing off the armed forces’ human and materiel strength. The Post reports: “Being a great president has to do with a lot of things, but one of them is being a great cheerleader for the country,” Trump said. “And we’re going to show the people as we build up our military, we’re going to display our military. “That military may come marching down Pennsylvania Avenue. That military may be flying over New York City and Washington, D.C., for parades. I mean, we’re going to be showing our military,” he added.
https://www.washingtonian.com/2017/01/18/trump-proposes-military-parades-in-dc/ edit: not able to change title - nvm its fixed (User was banned for this post ("Stop editorializing titles. OK Sobotnik, you might need to calm down on teh titles.
who gives a fuck? why do we need to show our military? why do we need to jerk off over tanks and guns? everyone knows we are the most powerful country on earth. You forgot that you claim to be from the party of a man who once said "speak softly, and carry a big stick", Trump. You definitely forgot the speak softly part.
Whatever happens re. Sobotnik's title, his views are shared. I know that's at least how I feel.
More military spending. Just what America needs! /s
Don is just showing his Putin colours
OK Sobotnik, you might need to calm down on teh titles.
No push it farther
Well part of that philosophy is to let people know about the big stick.
So soviet style nuclear parades? Cool
And much like Santa at the end of a Thanksgiving Day parade, here comes Uncle Sam in an M1 Abrams being pulled by a mix of terrorists and communists.
Well part of that philosophy is to let people know about the big stick.
Everyone already knows that America spends a lot of money on their military.
I think military parades are cool I have always wanted to see one IRL
Well part of that philosophy is to let people know about the big stick.
Everyone knows we have a big stick, this would just be a waste of money and time. [editline]18th January 2017[/editline]
I think military parades are cool
They are cool as fuck but presumably expensive and that money can probably be put to better use even if it's just somewhere else in defense.
Cold War 2: Electric Boogaloo
Massive military parades are almost always used by weak regimes to demonstrate to the population that the regime is still in control despite failings elsewhere. Nothing keeps people in line like thousands of soldiers goosestepping next to tanks.

War Day sounds metal. I like it better than Victory Day.
"How will you make America great?" "Let's send some tanks to drive through NYC. It'll be the greatest propaganda parade, the best parade." This has to stop.
So soviet style nuclear parades? Cool
I think Military parades are fine honestly. They give the military a chance to show off hours of commitment they practice, are largely harmless (unless you are easily triggered), and with the President being Commander in Chief it is common place through history even with the most progressive of presidents. Also I find the journalism misleading because it immediately says,
In an interview Wednesday with the Washington Post, President-elect Donald Trump was asked just exactly how he plans to make good on his promise to make America great again. One potential he floated to the Post‘s Karen Tumulty: military parades in DC and New York showing off the armed forces’ human and materiel strength
Which immediately makes you think soviet-style military parades. When he actually said in full;
“Being a great president has to do with a lot of things, but one of them is being a great cheerleader for the country,” Trump said. “And we’re going to show the people as we build up our military, we’re going to display our military. “That military may come marching down Pennsylvania Avenue. That military may be flying over New York City and Washington, D.C., for parades. I mean, we’re going to be showing our military,” he added.
Not really conjuring up May day parades for me right there. I think it is worse to suggest that we should never have a military parade just because of the bad nationalistic feelings you get. The US Military is a volunteer force that can have some recognition every once inawhile without feeling like they just goose-stepped a door down.
Would be pretty cool to see. My dad used to tell me about shows the NG used to put on when he was younger. Seeing tanks and trucks and guys on parade march, etc. It'd be neat to see that with the full inventory out and about. Said he really enjoyed it when he was younger, all that metal rolling around with purpose. I'd love to see it, I think. Heck, we already do airshows regularly, don't see how this is, uh, vulgar? Nothing wrong with bringing the civilian population and the military closer, not that relations are strained or anything, but atill.
Well part of that philosophy is to let people know about the big stick.
Teddy Roosevelt said: ''Speak softly, and carry a big stick. You will go far.'' In Trump's case, it is ''Speak bigly and carry around an even bigger stick. Let's go even further.''. On the other hand, this is a very strong persuasion technique to persuade those protesters who were rumored to come out in force to strongly reconsider their earlier babble of willing to start shit during Inauguration Day. And I am not seeing the big issue with having a few military fly-overs at all, since Americans do that for their big sport events as well. It looks pretty cool.
On the other hand, this is a very strong persuasion technique to persuade those protesters who were rumored to come out in force to strongly reconsider their earlier babble of willing to start shit during Inauguration Day.
Don't protest Trump or face the consequences...?
(unless you are easily triggered)
The fuel consumption of an Abrams triggers me.
The fuel consumption of an Abrams triggers me.
Triggers trigger me.
Teddy Roosevelt said: ''Speak softly, and carry a big stick. You will go far.'' In Trump's case, it is ''Speak bigly and carry around an even bigger stick. Let's go even further.''
You have completely missed the point of Roosevelt's quote. He's saying that you have to be willing to negotiate and get on well with countries, while making it clear you won't back down if your interests are severely threatened. Basically, being an actual statesman. Trump's "talking bigly" isn't negotiating, it's threatening and other countries and leaders simply don't like that. They won't like dealing with him. And as for an even bigger stick; well, the only reason you would want to make it bigger is if you're going to use it. After all, no point in spending more on a military when you're at peace and using it for defence.
Parading military hardware feels like a thing only totalitarian countries do.
Uh, how? I went to police shows with my school all the time when I was a kid, and I thought crawling through the trucks and mobile command centers was cool as hell. Was I actually living in a police state?
Parading military hardware feels like a very totalitarian thing to do.
Again no where does Trump suggest this. Like a jet flying over is fucking awesome, but when he actually suggests we drive exposed nukes on trucks down the Ave then you can call me retarded.
Don't protest Trump or face the consequences...?
Hey, they can protest peacefully. As in, without rioting. Should be perfectly possible. Or are you already saying that those groups that were planning to protest aren't that peaceful after all?
Uh, how?
historically parades and shows of military strength like these remind the peasantry of who's in charge and the overwhelming force they are up against. if you want to do a show of force to other countries it seems strange you would demonstrate in your own cities rather than someplace nearer or dearer to a rival that would drive the message home
