According to the Court's judgment, the boy reacted very strongly when the parents tried to restrict gaming. He attacked his father physically so that the police had to be called to the scene. The Court finds that gaming, which the boy had been doing around the clock, is a "socially destructive behavior". Already last year, the social authorities came in contact with the family after the boy had showed a poor mental health as a result of computer gaming. The authorities first tried to assist the family, but failed. The boy himself do not believe that he is addicted to video games. I bet this will fuel everyones parents even further into "omg our son is addicted to da computerz"
Thank god Jack Thompson was disbarred. He'd be having a field day with this.
I think i should block my mums internet connection for a few days, just so she cant see this particular news story
What if excess gaming didn't lead to poor mental health but poor mental health led to excessive amount of gaming, as well as causing him to go violent?
What if excess gaming didn't lead to poor mental health but poor mental health led to excessive amount of gaming, as well as causing him to go violent?
I'd say it could go both ways. Gaming can be good according to some studies, but overuse of it can't be great.
the social authorities came in contact with the family after the boy had showed a poor mental health as a result of computer gaming
Well yeah, almost anything in mass quantity is bad for your health.
I find it funny that the parents that tend to complain about their kids playing vidya games are typically the kind of people that sit in front of their TVs for like six hours a day.
Thank god Jack Thompson was disbarred. He'd be having a field day with this.
Oh wow nostalgia
the boy reacted very strongly when the parents tried to restrict gambling
Damm kids getting addicted to their online gambling.
tried to restrict gambling
translation error or did he gamble instead of game?
translation error or did he gamble instead of game?
Translation error. Spelande translates to both gambling and gaming
google translate, there's only gambling in the dictionary
He is playing World of Warcraft though, so perhaps shift the blame to that instead, not just games or gaming in general, but I can see where they were coming from, games can be addictive, and it does seem a tad idiotic to physically hurt someone over a game...unless of course its some little annoying prick, then by all means...
I recently had this computer addicted thing going on in my house. Parents cut off internet and everything
I'm not addicted, I can stop anytime I want!
I recently had this computer addicted thing going on in my house. Parents cut off internet and everything
And that's when you murdered them?
He is playing World of Warcraft though, so perhaps shift the blame to that instead, not just games or gaming in general, but I can see where they were coming from, games can be addictive, and it does seem a tad idiotic to physically hurt someone over a game...unless of course its some little annoying prick, then by all means...
yes World of warcraft makes people assault their fathers Clearly the kid does not have any issues, WoW made him do this
I bet this will fuel everyones parents even further into "omg our son is addicted to da computerz"
Well to be honest a lot of kids are. Would I consider myself addicted to gaming? Yes, and I believe that a lot of people squander their talents and become wasters because they are too lazy to do anything but play games, myself included.
the boy had showed a poor mental health as a result of computer gaming
lol

Thi kid is definately in denial if he attacked his parents, the poor mental health thing could just be depression and autism or something
I'm pretty sure he'll grow out of it eventually like I have.

He'll grow out of it sometime. Heck, I find it hard to actually motivate myself to play games now, I get bored really easily
You realize that is probably a stock photo right.
You're probably right, but I would be willing to bet that it was indeed WoW
Anything that triggers happiness in the brain can lead to dependency if you're an unhappy person inside. It can easily become escapism. People can be capable of doing it their whole lives if they can't find a way to fix what's wrong or move on from what happened. Not that I wish to imply every hobbyist and what not is mentally ill.
The article says nothing about how long/often he games for. For all we know this "addiction" could be ~6 hours a day everyday or what. It's unclear. :|
excessive computer gaming causes bad mental health ~or~ bad mental health causes excessive computer gaming YOU DECIDE

An addict on the other hand is ready for a lot just to keep his addiction happy. It's like a drug user and a drug addict, the user is mostly harmless while addict can stab you for some crack money.
man video game addiction isnt a problem its a symptom of a problem, thats what these 'specialists' are always getting wrong no one gets 'poor mental health' as a result of gaming. but i know people who would escape to a false reality to avoid the problems in real life. just saying
