Computerworld - Microsoft today said it had renamed its SkyDrive online storage services as OneDrive, picking a name six months after striking a deal with a British broadcaster that had taken the American firm to trademark court. "Changing the name of a product as loved as SkyDrive wasn't easy," Microsoft acknowledged in a post to a new blog. "We believe the new OneDrive name conveys the value we can deliver for you and best represents our vision for the future."
Source
"We believe the new OneDrive name conveys the value we can deliver for you and best represents our vision for the future."
canned marketing statement: check
OneDrive gains noGround.
Is Windows 9 gonna be called Onedows?

SkyDrive was far more unique considering Ubuntu One is a thing.
This was because of a trademark dispute though - SkyDrive was a great name. OneDrive fits with the Xbone, I guess, but it isn't as good.
"Changing the name of a product as loved as SkyDrive wasn't easy,"
Probably because the UK's Sky broadcasting company forced you to change it :v:
I'm all for alternatives to cloud storage providers but I wish Windows would have built in generic support for cloud storage so that instead of SkyDrive in explorer you would just have "Internet Storage" and you can link that with Dropbox / Skydrive / Box / whateverthefuck the attitude that they had with integrating SkyDrive straight into 8.1 just screams "walled garden" to me
Skydrive was much better. Also if Sky caused this then they should be sued into oblivion, sky is not a word you should be able to copyright, it's one word for christ sakes and a common one.

If windows wants me to use it more it needs to feel more natural in the windows environment. Make it act like a drive instead of yet another dropbox thing.

It would be nice to see more systems have that approach.
Why not call it Buttdrive.
Microsoft sure likes the word One lately.

I mean, fuck, if they had it their way, the literally entirety of today Internet wouldn't practically exist and we would all be using a proprietary implementation by Microsoft of something evolved out of it (and no that's not a stretch, they were pushing their proprietary version of "not internet" which, thankfully, failed).
They each use their own ways of transfer that are not generic which would be counter-productive for ms to integrate.
Because creating a open API for cloud storage providers to use for their respective products is SOO hard. The only reason is walled garden, aka wannabe Apple.
Why not call it Buttdrive.
uhhh [editline]27th January 2014[/editline] I'm not sure if it's that script or not.
Only reason I use skydrive regularly is because I was wan early adopter so I was grandfathered into getting 25GB of online storage for free, for life B-)

The folder on my computer will still say SkyDrive anyway. Good work Microsoft!
Microsoft sure likes the word One lately.
Probably has to do with how they're trying to connect all your devices together

I don't even know why BskyB even decided to sue them, everyone who isn't even in the UK has never even heard of them and even if you are from the UK you wouldn't think automatically it's a service from them SkyDrive was such a great name
Does that mean Skype will be renamed to Onepe?
It better not, but then again everyone says Skype got worse when Microsoft bought it.
OneNote Xbox One OneDrive
Windows one Watch as people flip their shit.
