But Chad Hurley, co-founder of YouTube, just did that. Leaving his job as CEO of the company, which he sold to Google for $1.65 billion in 2006, Hurley will be working full-time on his menswear label, Hlaska, together with his business partner, Anthony Mazzei, who founded the label in 1994. Hlaska is mostly stuff that a young Silicon Valley employee would wear to work: there's a lot of short-sleeved collared button-downs (perfect for crumpling into a ball at the foot of your futon after a long night of coding) as well as laptop covers and leather messenger bags. While many may wonder about the sudden shift in careers, Hurley explained that just like YouTube, they wanted something unavailable and build it themselves, although their products include common items such as wallets, bags and shirts. "We're trying to do something here at Hlaska that hasn't been done maybe since Levi Strauss filled a void and remained true to his roots. We admire great designers like Paul Smith and domestic companies like American Apparel, but in the end we're doing this because we want to bring back American production and build off that to grow." Hurley is confident that their products will ‘go viral’ the same way YouTube did and by using the same principles: “It's cut from the same mold. While a menswear company can't "go viral" in the Dancing Baby sense, you must ask yourself what makes something spread so fast. It's people's experiences. That may be something funny, like a Dancing Baby, or something shocking. Or merely just great customer service. Sure, word of mouth is slower than an Internet video, but they're born of the same principles.”If we’re going to set YouTube as the example, Hurley can probably make Hlaska one very successful venture. But it’s too early to tell. We just have to wait and see. Hlaska currently has stores in Palo Alto, San Francisco, and San Jose, and plans to open more stores in L.A., Austin, and New York in 2011.[/quote]
