• Final Fantasy XV's open world might be bigger than Just Cause 2, MGSV, Morrowind, GTAV and Witcher 3
Final Fantasy XV’s Map Size Potentially Revealed: it’s Roughly an Enormous 780 Square Miles We have been trying to calculate the size of the map of Final Fantasy XV since the release of the first tech demo, that included a diorama of what seems to be the game’s world. The first attempt wasn’t successful, as it was based on information provided by Game Director Hajime Tabata, that was afterwards clarified removing the link between the map of Episode Duscae and the full world of the game. This time around, we may have found the real key to get at least a rough estimation of the size of Final Fantasy XV‘s full map, and thanks to our Mathga II and Photoshopga II magicks, we discovered that it’s enormous. Even bigger than what we initially expected. First of all, a disclaimer: there are a few elements of risk in this process, which could throw the numbers off by a certain margin: first of all, I’m basing this on the assumption that the diorama is indeed the full map of the game. We have few reasons to believe that it isn’t, but it’s worth mentioning it. During game development, things can change. Secondly, there’s a degree of approximation involved: we’re dealing with pixels and perspective, and the pictures we have of the diorama are small and blurry, as they come from a video. Thirdly, a large percentage of the map is made of water. Unfortunately there’s no precise way to calculate the area of the landmasses by themselves, but this is still a good way to get a good estimation on the scope of the map. But let’s start with our key: we can find it in the driving video released recently. At the 19 seconds mark, you can see a map. The map indicates the length of the route mapped, which is 4,392 m. This is our breakthrough.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/wYuF14Hh.jpg[/t] Source: http://www.dualshockers.com/2015/09/01/final-fantasy-xv-map-size-potentially-revealed-its-roughly-an-enormous-780-square-miles/ The "how big of an open world can we make our game" dick measuring contest continues. 780 square miles. Remember, they said anything accessible by humans will be accessible in game.
Oh boy, lots of useless space potentially littered with countless repetitive objectives! Open world games are the best!
Oh boy, lots of useless space potentially littered with countless repetitive objectives! I doubt this will be one of them. I just hope Just Cause 3 is smaller.
I'm all for huge worlds and everything. But if its a copy and paste of each part repeatly over a large space then not interested.
Elite:Dangerous has a fairly astronomically huge map Just having a large map won't cut it though - it has to have content. If the whole thing is just terrain sprinkled with a few detail sprites here and there, is it really worth it?
It's a japanese open world game so it will be empty as fuck.
I'm all for huge worlds and everything. Games like GTA have shown that even an average-sized map can make a player feel tiny with clever design
Even though they are claiming that "anything accessible by humans" will be accessible, I wonder just how much will be gated off for paid DLC/ XV-2 and so on sequels.
Even though they are claiming that "anything accessible by humans" will be accessible, I wonder just how much will be gated off for paid DLC/ XV-2 and so on sequels.
I'd be very surprised if we didn't get XV-2 or something. They've put a lot of work into the world, arguably too much to justify it being sold for a mere $60.
There's a map on arma 3 that is 1400km2, its possible to fill the void. As witcher 3 proved its very possible to exchange encounters and beautiful terrain whenever necessary. I think we are reaching the limit on size and the normal triple a games timeframe though, and this might be it.
So how big is this compared to FUEL?
Still can't beat Daggerfall
Final fantasy, not only is it overdesigned, overcomplicated and overdone, now it's overwhelming, too!
STALKER still has the best open world to date, when developers make open worlds nowadays they focus too much on the player and has everything revolve around him, the game is "open" but its missing the "world" element of the open world
Too bad it's a Final Fantasy game or otherwise I'd be hyped to fuck, I don't care if it's empty I just really like feeling that openness of it all.
Still can't beat Daggerfall
I kind of want to see a remake of Daggerfall that tries to stay as faithful to the original as possible. That would be one hell of a game.
This is just a calculation made by fans though, it's probably way smaller than that I'm pretty sure.
Somehow doubt it can beat silkroad, an mmo that has a "few" spots with literaly nothing.
This is literally the perfect example where 'size doesn't matter' fits. Nobody gives a shit if your game is 1000000x bigger than another game if it's going to be generic/copy pasted bullshit. People care about game mechanics and aesthetics, if you can make an open world game that isn't repetitive as shit then sure, go ahead and make a huge world but i can already see this being the same bullshit over and over
They're probably just overemphasizing the "openworldness" of this game to assauge the fears of anyone who played the last title. Because anyone who's endured ff13 can tell you that progression in that game can be mapped out with a roll of measuring tape on a very long and tedious conveyer belt. And yes I know the rest of the 13 series is openworld but most people that hated ff13 probably never gave its sequels a chance
I really hate this trend of quantity over quality in recent open world games
As I understand it, the demo was generally well received by those fans who downloaded it. Though the area playable in that might've been something akin to a "vertical slice", so there's no telling if the actual game will have the same content density.
I mean.. it makes sense? i seriously doubt it's all populated but it's a game where driving is a large part of it, i'd be surprised if it wasn't the case.
So how big is this compared to FUEL?
5560 square miles was the size of FUEL's map, though it was so empty that it would still have felt that way even with a tenth of the area.
It was fun but jesus running 2kms was such a pain in the ass.
To be fair, you'll get chocobos/other vehicles in the full game to make it less of a slog to run around. final fantasy xv's demo was pretty alight i think it will be pretty swell tbh it was just bro camping time
Still can't beat Daggerfall
Daggerfall shouldn't even count.

Huge parts of WoW were pretty unpopulated too, and in fact I feel like I should mention large parts of... earth are fairly unpopulated. As long as it's fun I'm not going to pick on them for the fuckhuge map, it can even be done well - but I have absolutely zero faith in Squenix to produce anything of quality. This whole thing is beside the point for me.
