Virginia alcohol regulators say "Moonshiners" television show on Discovery misleads viewers
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Virginia alcohol regulators say the Discovery Channel's "Moonshiners" television show is misleading viewers into thinking the state is tolerating illegal booze manufacturing and that it wouldn't have participated if they knew how the episodes would turn out.
The television series is about people who brew their own moonshine and local authorities' efforts to track them down. The show includes actual western Virginia residents and state agents.
Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control spokeswoman Kathleen Shaw told The Associated Press in an email Thursday that viewers have asked why the state is allowing a crime to take place. Shaw said the show is a dramatization, and no illegal liquor is actually being produced.
"If illegal activity was actually taking place, the Virginia ABC Bureau of Law Enforcement would have taken action," Shaw wrote.
Earlier Thursday, the department issued a statement saying it would not have participated in the filming had they known how the show would've turned out.
"Virginia ABC agreed to participate in an informative piece that documents the history of moonshine and moonshine investigations in Virginia. Virginia ABC did not participate nor was aware of the false depiction of moonshine manufacturing, distribution and/or transportation in the filming, and would not have participated in the 'documentary' had it known of this portrayal," the statement said.
Shaw said the Discovery Channel had been asked to add a disclaimer "but the request was overlooked."
Messages left with a show publicist Thursday were not immediately returned.
Among other things, a Nov. 30 news release announcing the show's premiere says that "Viewers will witness practices rarely, if ever, seen on television including the sacred rite of passage for a moonshiner — firing up the still for the first time."
The release does not specify whether parts of the show are dramatized.
IM miss the times when discovery taught you shit while youwere entertained. I honestly can't give two shits about drunk red necks, or Red necks with guns, or red necks with swamps, or red necks on a truck, or red necks on a boat
That moonshiners show is actually pretty cool.
I used to live on a mountain in Franklin, Virginia. Also known as the Moonshine Capital.
I had no idea that the show was dramatized, it was pretty cool thinking that they could be caught at any moment.

I think half of that is History channel, but to be honest they're both like that: used to be informative and entertaining, now are just dumb.

Good ratings is more important to channelrunners than staying in their subject matter... this is why the History Channel is about alien conspiracists, pawn shop owners and other non-historical stuff now.

At least they still play Modern Marvels.
i had a feeling it was bullshit considering they're filming people committing illegal activities and then not telling the authorities about it until after the fact
the show seemed pretty cool, sucks that its faked
[editline]31st December 2011[/editline]
also christ sorry but all this "i miss the old history/discovery :'(" stuff is so annoying
some of the shows they play are fucking stupid but you have to understand that a television channel does have to provide some semblance of entertainment to stay popular
The good shows that are still on about science are on Nat Geo like the universe, but mostly gang wars and drugs stories
Science needs to be as popular as the 90s with the cosmos and other eye opening shows
Mythbusters redeems discovery though

this is so true. discovery is turning into the redneck channel
what was that show that always had neil degrasse tyson on as a guest?
this is so true. discovery is turning into the redneck channel
this may have something to do with the fact that most television audiences are comprised of people living in the city and rednecks live lives that are somewhat unique and foreign to city viewers

Moonshinin' is a very culturally relevant thing for people in the south/appalachian foothills.
For fucks sake, would it kill you to learn a thing or two about another part of the country's culture and history?
I enjoy Sons of Guns, its a pretty fun show to watch and I actually like the people on there. I can't stand American Guns though, that show just annoys me and I refuse to watch it.
gold rush, dirty jobs, sons of guns, mythbusters, auction kings, curiosity, weed wars, man v wild, stormchasers, penn and fucking teller, mww, dual survival, and life
jesus christ discovery is the redneck channel now!!!!
seriously not to be a twat but if you guys would actually look past the surface value of some of these shows you can actually: wait for it.. learn something
surprisingly enough theres a lot of history and culture that can be found outside big cities!

sons of guns is about guns, american guns is about the whacky adventures of a hearty christian family and their attempts to steer their teenage daughter in the right direction while they happen to own a gun store

Fortunately, I live in the city where they don't exist, so I only have to deal with them on the rare occasion that I leave.
Kopimi, the universe was that show
And if I want to learn about redneck culture I'd watch the travel channel, if I watch discovery I want to learn and be educated, as a kid when you tumescent were watching saturday morning cartoons, I watched the cosmos and other documentaries on discovery and history. I didn't understand Jack shit but it got through to me about learning and science and history.
I want to learn not be fed garbage
Penn and Teller is on Discovery? AWESOME

I didn't like Gold Rush at first, but there is something oddly interesting about it. I can't really get in to Dirty Jobs, but the occasional episode interests me. I already mentioned Sons of Guns. I absolutely love Mythbusters. I really like seeing a lot of the stuff they get on Auction Kings and learning the history behind some pieces, and I like the staff at Gallery 63. I love most of the stuff they show on Curiosity, though the occasional one is just dull to me. I haven't watched Weed Wars and don't really want to. Man versus Wild can sometimes be interesting. I've not watched much Stormchaser and never really got hooked on it. I missed most of the Penn and Teller episodes unfortunately and haven't seen them back on for some reason. Man Woman Wild can actually be pretty funny. Dual Survival is interesting mainly to see the two of them pick at each other.

Cosmos is coming back. Except it will be aired on Fox primetime in 2013. Neil DeGrasse Tyson is the host.

Basically, they tell you a few different stories having to do with science, technology, or history, and all but one are real. They leave subtle clues as to which one is fake, such as giving the wrong units of measurement or making up an institution, in an effort to tip people off.
like, i agree that the channels need to revert to their old formats where they're actually scientific and historic, but you guys act as if the current shows are just complete utter shit where you cant learn anything at all
is learning about american history, gold digging and survival a substitute for learning about the universe and science and chemistry? no, but it doesn't make these shows shit either. i see it more as a case of (for the most part) good shows being put on the wrong channel

Don't worry about it. Ann and Tyson won't let him fuck it up. He's actually the one that got it through on Primetime TV. Give him a break.
Steven Soter will be there too.

No it isn't I'm from Georgia, and I've been offered Moon shine maybe 2 or 3 times in my life, and have never seen a distillery for it. Saying moon shine is apart of our culture is like saying meth and nascar are apart of our culture. Just because a few of us like/do it, doesn't mean the entire population of the south does.
