Earlier this month, the conservative National Review’s Kevin Williamson drove a steamroller over this line in the sand. Williamson’s article, “Bernie’s Strange Brew of Nationalism and Socialism,” which was published two weeks ago but became available on the conservative magazine’s website on Monday, is not a model of clarity. It bounces between criticism of Democratic presidential candidate and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ trade policies and quotes from some of Sanders’ least thoughtful supporters. Yet, as the title of the article suggests, Williamson does come to a bold conclusion — Bernie Sanders is a literal Nazi who is leading a literal Nazi movement in the United States. Williamson lays this thesis out in one paragraph:
In the Bernieverse, there’s a whole lot of nationalism mixed up in the socialism. He is, in fact, leading a national-socialist movement, which is a queasy and uncomfortable thing to write about a man who is the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland and whose family was murdered in the Holocaust. But there is no other way to characterize his views and his politics. The incessant reliance on xenophobic (and largely untrue) tropes holding that the current economic woes of the United States are the result of scheming foreigners, especially the wicked Chinese, “stealing our jobs” and victimizing his class allies is nothing more than an updated version of Kaiser Wilhelm II’s “yellow peril” rhetoric, and though the kaiser had a more poetical imagination — he said he had a vision of the Buddha riding a dragon across Europe, laying waste to all — Bernie’s take is substantially similar. He describes the normalization of trade relations with China as “catastrophic” — Sanders and Jesse Helms both voted against the Clinton-backed China-trade legislation — and heaps scorn on every other trade-liberalization pact. That economic interactions with foreigners are inherently hurtful and exploitative is central to his view of how the world works.

Source
As a history student, this makes my soul vomit uncontrollably.
:clickbait: journalism ladies and gentlemen
Can't they be sued for libel for publishing this? [editline]22nd July 2015[/editline] Not that Bernie Sanders if the kind of person to sue.
Can't they be sued for libel for publishing this? [editline]22nd July 2015[/editline] Not that Bernie Sanders if the kind of person to sue.
Probably, but even if they did get sued, other similar magazines would probably run "What is Sanders covering up with his lawsuit" articles and the whole thing would spiral out of control.
At this point in time it is probably better to ignore this kind of shit than dignify it with a response I mean just look at Fem Freq's response to all of their criticism :smug: [sp]meaning they are awfully good at avoiding tantrum spirals because they just ignore things and move on and then just say more crazy bullshit[/sp]
Unfortunately Freedom of speech works both ways :(
Unfortunately Freedom of speech works both ways :(
No, not unfortunately. Because freedom of speech means I can say this. Kevin Williamson is an unscrupulous yellow baboon. Check out his other insightful articles. http://www.nationalreview.com/author/kevin-d-williamson
Oh this is gold A Republican writer calling the leading left-wing Democrat a xenophobe :goodjob:
How in the ever loving fuck can anyone describe Bernie Sanders as a nationalist His platform is basically "We need to help America catch up to Scandinavian countries"
Unfortunately Freedom of speech works both ways :(
Freedom of speech ends where it becomes harmful. For example, publishing an article falsely accusing a candidate of being the leader of a Neo-Nazi movement, with the intention of damaging his career.
How in the ever loving fuck can anyone describe Bernie Sanders as a nationalist His platform is basically "We need to help America catch up to Scandinavian countries"
He wants to end some free trade agreements which will hinder American business with other nations. Somehow, this GOP write has twisted that into xenophobic nationalism.
:snip: misread something and responded in a way that doesn't really make sense
How in the ever loving fuck can anyone describe Bernie Sanders as a nationalist His platform is basically "We need to help America catch up to Scandinavian countries"
By being completely ignorant of his actual views and fixating on labels. His ideas aren't nearly as radical as they're painted as, but sadly many people don't care to listen.
He called sanders a nazi and then compared him to Kaiser Wilhelm II? He should probably learn more about nazis before he accuses people of being them.
At the same time while hearing about this making me laugh with disbelief, I'm surprised someone would go out of their way to say something like this but, again Freedom of speech comes into hand :\
:clickbait: journalism ladies and gentlemen
Still does its job. Even if their reputation is tarnished, they did that much more damage, like a political suicide bomber. If enough people state the same warped narrative, no matter how outrageously stupid it is, people will start believing it. The right will gladly sacrifice themselves one after the other to stain the reputation of whomever of their enemies that they can.
Sanders realizes that many of our best paying jobs were sent over-seas, wants to bring back more manufacturing to the US and tries to prevent out-sourcing any more jobs. "YOU NAZI!" A+ writing, good jerb.
At the same time while hearing about this making me laugh with disbelief, I'm surprised someone would go out of their way to say something like this but, again Freedom of speech comes into hand :\
People have been having a bitch of a time coming up with anything to really attack Bernie Sanders with. This sort of showcases the desperation at play. They're calling a jew a nazi.
:clickbait: journalism ladies and gentlemen
TBH there's some pretty gratuitous clickbait journalism going on here when ThinkProgress is taking an article saying 'his politics are best characterized as national-socialism, and that makes me uncomfortable' and never uses the label 'Nazi', and presenting it as 'CONSERVATIVE MAGAZINE CALLS BERNIE SANDERS A NAZI'. The article in question is pretty dumb but the conservatives aren't the only ones focusing on labels, clickbait, and manufactured outrage here.
Later in the article: "He is a national socialist in the mode of Hugo Chávez. He isn’t driven by racial hatred; he’s driven by political hatred. And that’s bad enough." So, no, he isn't saying that Bernie is racist like the article linked might make you believe. Seems we have a chain of clickbait going on.

Also, one of the examples of Sander's totalitarianism is the constitutional amendment that he wrote and supports as a candidate. Generally, it's about completely disallowing corporations from spending any money at all in campaigns, but it goes a step further. It also includes any private entity that "promote[s] business interests." So it essentially stops anyone from creating any sort of entity to support any and all business interests. He doesn't like business, therefore no one else is allowed to support their interests. (https://www.sanders.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/Saving-American-Democracy.pdf) Oddly enough it also allows for the creation of political committees that can spend contributions made directly to a candidate.
Calling someone a Nazi is so fucking childish. It's like someone saying "I think you're stupid haha"
Freedom of speech ends where it becomes harmful. For example, publishing an article falsely accusing a candidate of being the leader of a Neo-Nazi movement, with the intention of damaging his career.
No. No it doesn't
I'd say we've gone full circle here but the author of this article probably thinks the earth is flat so he wouldn't understand the concept of a circle. I wonder how it feels knowing neolithic man was smarter than you.
Calling someone a Nazi is so fucking childish. It's like someone saying "I think you're stupid haha"
Phew, it's a good thing the author never called him a Nazi. It's almost like you didn't read the article.
Phew, it's a good thing the author never called him a Nazi. It's almost like you didn't read the article.
National Socialism is literally Nazism. He said Bernie Sanders is leading a Nazi movement.
Phew, it's a good thing the author never called him a Nazi. It's almost like you didn't read the article.
[editline]22nd July 2015[/editline]
No. No it doesn't
Yes, it does. It's called Defamation. It's not as strict as elsewhere, but it's still a thing.
Phew, it's a good thing the author never called him a Nazi. It's almost like you didn't read the article.
You know he could have said a plethora of different words in different combinations to avoid the implication that Bernie Sander is a Nazi but he didn't so one has to assume that he wants that to be implied to his reader. It doesn't help that he also mentioned the holocaust and Bernie being jewish in the same sentence. It doesn't take a genius to read between the lines at what he's trying to say there.
