What are prepaid cards? Prepaid cards, or gift cards are credit cards that you buy without having to enter any information. They are called prepaid cards because you pay them before using them, there are multiple types of card, 25$, 50$, 75$, 100$ and others. With all the types you will need to pay a activating fee of 4.95$(You will although not pay any taxes on these cards). Why should you use them? Gift cards are for someone that doesn't have a credit card. Buying things online can be very tricky if you don't own a credit card or if your parents doesn't want you to use theirs, this why prepaid cards are awesome, it's the same as a credit card! Where can I buy them? You can buy prepaid cards pretty much in any shops like Walmart, 7-11 and even drug stores! You just have to look around or ask the employees if they sell prepaid cards. I created this thread because I felt that not eveybody knows what prepaid cards and that they need to know their existence because they are pretty awesome. Happy spending!
Care to share what the point of the thread is? :v: I mean over what should we talk
Uh... woo! Prepaid cards!
American Express has prepaid cards that have no service fees, a free ATM withdraw once a month, and I think the actual card is free as well.
My favourite prepaid cards are Red Lobster because they can double as an Olive Garden card in a pinch, woo woo
I've only ever bought one prepaid card and that was for Xbox Live. Ever since, I've deeply regretted that decision.

Most pre-paid cards I've got haven't really worked online. They worked in a few places but not all. Steam seems good about them but you may as well just get a Steam wallet card and forgo the 5 bucks. Honestly just get a damn debit card, shouldn't be all that hard to convince your parents since most of you should be 16-18, in which you ought to have a part time job, in which a bank account would be good. If you're over 18 why are you even in here?
A debit card doesn't work online, the use of a debit card is to get money from your bank account or to pay things directly in the shops. Also, you can't find steam cards everywhere.
are you the inventor of the pre-paid card? My Visa Debit is neat. It even has the Paywave thing that makes it possible to pay small amounts (like 1 bottle of soda or such) by just flicking it past a reader.

Only useful time I used a prepaid card for was on an airplane flight, I got to watch the shitty inflight movie for free because I already used all of the money on it. But yeah seriously if you are over the age of 16 just go to your bank and get a visa/mastercard/whatever debit card, avoid paying that 5 dollar fee.
If you're going to buy one of these cards, don't buy a god damn Visa gift card/prepaid. Those things are massive pain in the fucking ass to actually work properly, get an American Express. They come with pins, don't need to be registered and they're are no extra fees.
I have a debit card, but I cannot use it for instant transations. I've gone down to my credit union (There's the problem, probably) and they said I HAVE to get a credit card for online purchases.
Don't think they sell these in the UK, just get a debit card, much easier And they do work online, I had a Maestro from a savings account since I was 14 and never had a problem, I also have a Mastercard from a current account and still never had a problem

[editline]4th May 2013[/editline] By the way a "Debit" card here is a bank card, maybe it's not the same?
Visa Gift Cards <3
Thought about getting a prepaid Mastercard to purchase apps through google wallet with, anybody knows if that works?
In the US you have debit cards and credit cards. Debit cards are cards that are linked to your bank checking account. You can use this card to buy anything online, you can use it to withdraw money at an ATM, but you can't use it with insufficient funds in your account. Credit cards are cards that can be used to buy things online or withdraw money from an ATM (at a hefty fee) but you use the company's credit, not your own money. You pay all or part of it back at the end of the month.
I have a visa debit card. I just use it as a credit card and it's generally accepted as a credit card in stores/online sites but the only difference is that I already pay for the money in it. Like I charge it with money from my bank account and I can't use any extra money except for the amount I've transferred to the card. At least that's how debit cards work here.
Just open a bank account, I opened a bank with £50 when I was like 14 and they gave me a debit card. Then I could buy stuff on the internet [editline]4th May 2013[/editline]
I have a visa debit card. Thought they'd work differently depending on the country (because I know everything is ass backwards in this country)
Anyone know how to get cash out of one of these cards? I was given a $500 card and I'd rather have it in cash than only being able to use it at certain locations.

[editline]4th May 2013[/editline] though I don't know why'd you want cash unless you were buying drugs

Most autoparts sites don't accept American Express.

Then buy ~$50 or so worth of required stuff and ask for like $400-450 cash back.

Prepaid cards are the worst gifts ever.
Do you not get debit cards in the US? You can get them at 13 here and they're a lot easier than a credit card because its impossible to get in debt if you make sure you don't go into minus. I don't see why they'd be Europe exclusive
