A Photography Effect

I'm generally new to photography, I've taken many photos before but I never aimed to produce anything professional.
I was browsing DeviantArt and a few photos caught my eye. They all seemed to be adjusted in a similar way, but I could never manage to achieve an effect quite like it.

I played around with curves, brightness, contract, exposure, and some other stuff but no luck.
Any ideas or tips on how they adjusted the photos or what filters they may have used?

Fucking with R, G, & B curves and making the image lighter than normal.

purple-orange gradient map on soft light. make sure you have at least one spot of blown highlights and then make your midtones a bit lighter.

I feel like if there was a lens that actually made photos look like that, all the pictures would be very ugly.

There are occasions when this looks nice but don't overdo it because you'll look like a dumb hipster and this is [b]horrible[/b] for a newbie to start with.

And no I have no idea how it's done I'm just lurking around the forums and playing an old man.

Most people just use lightroom presets, but it can be done by adjusting thie hue and of the mids and highs.

the default presets in lightroom are fugly

presets in general are just inadvisable in LR, you should [i]really[/i] tune the edit to the photo from the ground up, have a process you work through so that each aspect of the picture is to your liking, not just to tumblr's.
