Accused of urinating in public, spitting on the street, or kicking a sacred temple bell - free-spending Chinese tourists are receiving a mixed welcome as their soaring numbers help the kingdom's creaking economy.Growing outrage over the perceived disrespect of visitors from the Asian giant saw authorities print thousands of Chinese-language etiquette manuals earlier this year in a bid to keep their tourists in check.
Last month it was a photo of a young girl peeing in the grounds of Bangkok's Grand Palace that triggered the latest round of enraged, and sometimes racist, comments as Thai social media users claimed she was Chinese.
In March, a Thai model's video of tourists from China jumping the queue at an airport was viewed more than two million times and saw a similarly angry rant against Thailand's largest group of foreign holidaymakers.
At the gleaming Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple, in northern Chiang Rai province, owner Chalermchai Kositpipat complained about the state of the toilets after a recent visit by a Chinese group. "We had problems with some Chinese who defecated anywhere, so I asked the guides to explain to them that rules must be respected in Thailand," Chalermchai said, having earlier threatened to refuse the nationals entry.
But he stopped short of issuing a ban, and like Thai authorities is loath to cut out the Chinese at a time when they are bucking the trend of dipping visitor figures in the kingdom, where tourism accounts for 8.5 per cent of gross domestic product.
Last year around 4.6 million Chinese nationals visited Thailand, with the average tourist spending 5,500 baht (HK$1,250) per day - more than the average European visitor.
Their collective contribution, expected to reach US$5.6 billion this year, is not one the ruling junta can afford to lose as it struggles to revive a sclerotic economy.
At the White Temple, Thai tour guide Pin Su says her job has become an art in diplomacy due to the growing number of Chinese visitors.
"They do not always pay attention, they spit, talk loudly, sometimes they leave the toilet in a catastrophic state," she said.
"But I cannot remind them every day that we must be careful to be clean. I do not want to offend them. And all these tourists, it is for Thailand!"
While it will be dumb to say that all of the chinese tourists are like this, it is true that a rather large majority of them are not well behaved, and its not just in South East Asia, but many parts of the world.
And having been in the hospitality industry, I can say I've had my fair share. I am hoping things can change for the better though, and people will then treat them with more respect.
I'd love to see a chinese tourist try anything in Finaland.
Shit, we don't like any countrys tourists.
One time at work minutes after we put out some samples of chicken wings, a Chinese family of about 8 showed up and ate everything on the plate (like, they literally just stood there and took from the plate until it was empty) then left.
What an odd culture.

Chinese tourists are so rude; they just have no situational awareness.
Bit of a broad brush, but in Sydney it drives you up the wall pretty quick.
We get a lot of chinese tourists here as well, and we have the same problems here as well a lot of the time.
I remember going to the airport because my aunt was going back home overseas, and there was a group of around 10 Chinese tourists just blocking off an area completely
I can't express this enough, we've got the same problems, and it's especially bad over here because it's even easier to get here from China than anywhere else.
But of course nothing will be done about it because we're making a lot of money off of them.

I think you're mistaking those people for the Koreans.

And you have like a load of them working in Japan to cater to the Chinese tourists.
I saw a shitload of them. Was like 4 in 10 were Chinese on working visas or something.
The glorious result of lifting several hundred million people out of poverty in less than 1 generation.
Imagine if you took 500 million poor redneck farmers, and suddenly make them all middle class, and sent them around the world. It's essentially what's happening.
Give it a generation or two, and it should get better.
Worst of all: they refuse to fucking queue properly.
And their GODDAMN SELFIE STICKS.
To be fair every son of a bitch tourist nowadays is using a selfie stick, regardless of where they're from.
I've never really had issues with them in Philly.
Now fucking Europeans? Oh Dear Lord, don't take them anywhere near Reading Terminal Market because they'll complain about it, 24/7.
It's rare to meet some Chinese tourists with situational awareness. Most of the ones I've seen either never have manners or are incredibly rude. Really wonder why that is the case with most Chinese tourists.

this is actually accurate, mao tried to slot all the rich and educated people because he thought they posed a threat to his regime, and made everybody peasants,
and then there was 'the great leap forward' that totaled china

American on the outside, british on the inside? :v:

Within China, they just don't have any manners whatsoever. They just automatically assume that it's the same in other countries that they can just be as bad-mannered as they want. I'm sure it's been mentioned on here before, but even the Chinese government had to tell people to have better manners when they go to other countries.

Who was it in a thread a few days back that said it was racist to label Chinese tourists like this :v:
Gonna have a shock when they see this...

A cultural upbringing must be racist.
What baffles me is how Chinese people seem to fail to keep the restroom from looking like someone tossed buckets of shit everywhere. I'm Chinese, born and lived my whole life in the US went on a tour in China and the tour guide had set up a nice neat looking restaurant everything looked fancy and well kepted for us to have our lunch and when I went to use the rest room, my god there was shit in the urinals and piss strewn over half of the restroom, the squat toilets, I'm thinking there's no way you can fucking miss since you're just squatting over a hole in the ground but no, a trail of liquid shit from the paper filled hole in the floor, out the cubicle and to the center room. There was even puke in the corners of room, I don't even know man, everything fluid that a human body can produce was just all over the place. I had to stand in piss to use the only half decent looking urinal that wasn't covered in utter disgust. It was really fun watching mates from my tour group go and and come out with a thousand yard stare.
China is a really nasty, filthy place over all, at least the cities are
it has a country side that makes the american west look like nothing though

And if I remember correctly they accused a Chinese guy of being racist towards Chinese people.

Its somewhat true, you have hong Kong people who hate the 'mainlanders' and get annoyed when they were labelled as one. Same thing here as well.

I remember that thread, fun times.
I always think Chinese people are shouting at each other and in some sort of argument when I hear them talk because the language is very harsh and punchy sounding, and they're always really loud (didn't know the loud part was part of the culture, though; I just figured I was only hearing the ones who were arguing, but I guess not!).

Chinese families used to be one of the biggest annoyances I'd encounter at the grocery store that I used to work part time at; absolutely zero situational awareness. They'd come in with the entire family (three generations) and stand in a big cluster in the middle of the aisle and completely refuse to acknowledge you and make way if you tried to get passed. It also took them about 10 minutes to make tiny decisions like which brand of coffee to buy (although I suppose this is inherent in collectivist cultures because) which meant they could really test your patience if they refused to move. All of my coworkers who were Chinese but westernised (say second or third generation in Australia) were absolutely bewildered by the whole thing.
I don't have experience with Chinese tourists because I don't live in a touristy area, but the Chinese students at my university are honestly just as bad as all the Chinese tourist horror stories I hear. I swear, they think because we can't understand them it means we can't hear them either and I almost want to learn how to say "shut the fuck up" in Mandarin. And if they see someone they know standing in line, they think it's ok to butt in front of me.
Last time a bunch of Chinese tourists litter on the MRT in my country, a dude asked them to pick the litter up, then he got beat up by this whole group of Chinese tourists.
The people of my country really hate Chinese tourists too, but we can't just get rid of them, they're the major source of our income
