BOSTON — A federal jury on Friday condemned Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a failed college student, to death for setting off bombs at the 2013 Boston Marathon that killed three people and injured hundreds more in the worst terrorist attack on American soil since Sept. 11, 2001. The jury of seven women and five men, which last month convicted Mr. Tsarnaev, 21, of all 30 charges against him, 17 of which carry the death penalty, took more than 14 hours to reach its decision. It was the first time a federal jury had sentenced a terrorist to death in the post-Sept. 11 era, according to Kevin McNally, director of the Federal Death Penalty Resource Counsel Project, which coordinates the defense in capital punishment cases. Prosecutors portrayed Mr. Tsarnaev, who immigrated to Cambridge, Mass., from the Russian Caucasus with his family in 2002, as a coldblooded, unrepentant jihadist who sought to kill innocent Americans in retaliation for the deaths of innocent Muslims in American-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
(thanks to agentfaze for article) http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/16/us/sentence-reached-for-dzhokar-tsarnaev-in-boston-marathon-bombing.html
What do they mean with 'counts 4 5 9' etc?
assuming those are the charges he had a shitton of them
What do they mean with 'counts 4 5 9' etc?
each count covers the differing charges laid.

Even for what he did this makes me feel very uncomfortable. Edit: I guess I see nothing to cheer about. It's another human being killed. It's revenge instead of justice. That's what I think about the death penalty in general.
He is being sentenced to death by lethal injection. What if the supreme court this summer says that lethal injection is illegal? What are we going to do to kill him then?
Even for what he did this makes me feel very uncomfortable.
I worry that this whole thread is going to be super duper liberal FP all the sudden being extremely pro death penalty (until next week)
I worry that this whole thread is going to be super duper liberal FP all the sudden being extremely pro death penalty (until next week)
Well if there's anyone who deserves the death penalty, it's this guy
Good job making a martyr out of him.
He is being sentenced to death by lethal injection. What if the supreme court this summer says that lethal injection is illegal? I was thinking he was sentenced in Saudi Arabia or something... I have no idea why death is somehow his payment when we're all going to die anyway. Ending his life just means to me that he gets off scot-free in my honest opinion. Yet thousands of prisoners with lesser charges have to go through this: which imo is the real deal to punishment.
Well if there's anyone who deserves the death penalty, it's this guy
No one deserves the death penalty though.
Well if there's anyone who deserves the death penalty, it's this guy
If you don't support the death penalty that means you don't support the death penalty ever.
lol what did you expect? It's not he was going to walk off scott free, be given a brand new car, and awarded with a year subscription to Netflix.
Can you tell me why him dying is actually the best payment for what he did? And him not having the opportunity to do it again is not a reason.
How is killing him gonna do anything at all? It was either that or somehow escaping and evading as the good options. Why not imprison him for life in a fucked up prison instead which would actually be a better punishment?
He is being sentenced to death by lethal injection. What if the supreme court this summer says that lethal injection is illegal? What are we going to do to kill him then?
He was sentenced to death before any ban of lethal injection. He would still be able to have that as an option. [editline]15th May 2015[/editline]
if that happens what other options are there at a federal level? i think they would just give him a life sentence and be done with it if that were the case
Move him to a prison in another state.
As a wise man once said, I'm not happy that he's dead, I'm just happy that he's gone.

We shouldn't wish for this guy to suffer, but we should instead try to rehabilitate him.
You're against the death penalty for all the wrong reasons. I haven't seen any cases of that being successfully done.
See you later you piece of terrorist shit. Victims got what they wanted (minus one).
As a wise man once said, I'm not happy that he's dead, I'm just happy that he's gone.
"pls make the bad man go away"

[editline]15th May 2015[/editline] Move him to a prison in another state.
You still have issues with states not being able to get compounding pharmacies to make the drug that actually kills properly. I would not be surprised if the supreme court just outright stopped it completely due to the fact they are using them as test subjects to continue it.
I worry that this whole thread is going to be super duper liberal FP all the sudden being extremely pro death penalty (until next week)
It's leaning liberal right now, but it's still early. Don't really understand the sympathy for him. He did what he did, he took the lives and limbs of other innocent people, and now he is going to face the consequences for it. Simple. All anyone should feel about this news of his impending execution is indifference, nothing else.
You're against the death penalty for all the wrong reasons. We shouldn't wish for this guy to suffer, but we should instead try to rehabilitate him.
OH right, because we're totally gonna reabilitate this guy... What does the death penalty serve for? Absolutely nothing. Guys like him won't give a shit if they die, and they certainly as well will never be reabilitated either. And what will reabilitation even be like? What message does it sends as a "punishment" to people like him? Same for the death penalty.
Brainwashed people like this are a loss at rehabilitating. I haven't seen any cases of that being successfully done.
How do you know that? Are you renowned psychologist or something who knows for sure he can't be rehabilitated. He actually walked off the boat with his hands up which in my opinion totally contradicts what you said. Why would some 100% brainwashed jihadist not want to die?

His mission is completed, and death to him is at best a small price for the pursuit of the fucked up ideas that made him do it. The death penalty isn't about revenge. It's about removing a potentially dangerous person from society in a way that doesn't impose a $400k tax burden per year. Prisoners and life sentences are expensive. With a death penalty, it's just over. You don't have to worry about recidivism, or escape, or rehabilitation. It's a practical solution to a complex problem. Is it the best thing? Probably not. But it's cheap, and easy, and safe.
