Actually the world without the catholic church would mean:
No Crusades
No Witch Burnings
No Problems in Ireland or anything else that accounts for Protestants vs Catholics.
Donating money to a 3rd world country does not "Improve" the state of the country so to speak, it only prolongs the time in which the poor gets to live, even furthering their pain.
And hopelessness wouldn't be a problem as i see millions of atheist and other world religious persons going about their day just as fine as they would under a catholic religion.
No church = No/Much Much less AIDS in africa.
Fucking assholes, banning the use of condoms.
No church involvment=shit gets done.

I was thinking this the yesterday and wondering why the American Gvt. lets religion interfere so much with politics.
This plannet is stupid. We base decisions on weither a make believe 'god' would approve of it.
People have to swear on the bible when they go to court and 'in god we trust' is printed onto american money.
Gullable halfwits

You should clone yourself 6 billion times and go live somewhere else then where there will be no silly different opinions, ideas and beliefs.
It's not about people having different opinions. It's about the fact there is no god. Science disproves it and not a single person on this earth can show anyone 'god' or prove it in any other way.
If i gave you a book about a man called peter who lived a long time ago and you had to follow every word would you?
Also how is it that every skin color claims to have their own 'god'

I believe the Witch Burning thing is just a myth, Maybe a couple people died for that reason and in that way

Welcome to my who gives a shit list.
Tell me, why does the bible say that a crying child / a disobediant child should be stoned? Yet christians today don't do this?
Could it be that the bible is fucking stupid and they just bend the rules to fit the situation?
Religion was used to explain the unexplainable. Comets, The Sunrise/Sunset, the moon, stars, etc
Today Religion is a money making business, and borderline Pyramid Scheme, Nothing more. There's no loopholes out but there's endless loopholes in so to get as many people in on it as possible
it didn't really matter what the debate was about as soon as i saw stephen fry i knew who i agreed with
It's about the fact there is no god. Science disproves it and not a single person on this earth can show anyone 'god' or prove it in any other way.
Science can't disprove something that can't be observed, measured and witnessed in any form. And I'm not saying that god exist, I'm just saying that science is not disproving it, because it can't.
Tell me, why does the bible say that a crying child / a disobediant child should be stoned? Yet christians today don't do this?
Because it was written by men 2000 years ago and they had different "high morals".
Could it be that the bible is fucking stupid and they just bend the rules to fit the situation?
They've been bending their rules since ever.
This reminds me of a thread a while back which showed a decline in the numbers of religious people and there was many arguments in the thread about the future and how the world would unite under science and be able to achieve common goals and life would be greater etc. although we all don't believe in Judaism, Christianity, Islam etc we may all share at least a mutual believe that there could be higher beings whether it be a 'God' or an alien - we all at some point question our existence.
[editline]25th July 2011[/editline]
In some ways Science may disprove Christianity but may prove the existence of a higher being as for example the great work CERN is doing about the creation of the universe - how it just came about etc. All the bible has ever taught is that Jesus was a great man that wanted everyone to put aside differences, treat each other right and overcome our issues in life - then over time the original concept was polluted and dilated by mere men to bring about more followers and enhance someones questions of God and deliever answers into which they truly didn't have the answers.

THEN WHAT ARE YOU FOR?

creation of the universe - how it just came about
It didn't "just" come about. Just because you don't know how an island is formed it doesn't mean it magically appeared by someone's spell or mystic power.
All the bible has ever taught is that Jesus was a great man that wanted everyone to put aside differences, treat each other right and overcome our issues in life
No, it taught a lot about morality too. Barbaric one at times.
then over time the original concept was polluted and dilated by mere men to bring about more followers and enhance someones questions of God and deliever answers into which they truly didn't have the answers.
The unstained core of the christianity is the bible, and it has a huge amount of ridiculous teachings about morality. So it wasn't perfect from the start. Somehow power-hungry men managed to twist it to a point where the original seemed perfect compared to that.
Right now it's still a device of control just not as barbaric as it used to, since noone actually follows all the morals from the bible anymore. Yet still it shapes the views of people about others in a way that could make sense 2000 years ago, but now it makes no sense, at least for those who think for themselves.
He has the best debate ever. What would Jesus think of the church? That's all he needs to say.
I love religious debates. Ann said it herself; she was born and raised a catholic and in a catholic school. To this day i wonder how people can take themselves and their religion seriously when it's just the one they were told to believe. People born in other parts of the world are brought up to believe other religions and it's what they think is the absolute truth. It's so frustrating.
Stephen Fry is a national treasure and should be a role model to all.
In the final picture, where it zooms out, Stephen is smiling and Ann is frowning.
I love Mr. Fry so much, I would love to shake his hand one day

Societies such as early Rome, which were polytheistic and not catholic went to war at the same, if not larger rate than civilizations predominantly catholic. They also had the same rate of "witch burning" and dis acceptance of pagan beliefs, for example Nero's mass killings of Christians in gladiatorial festivals.

The Catholic church has not made the world worst, it WAS and still IS the world. A world without religion is not a human one, and accepting that is necessary for how seriously we should take the purging of religion. Cherry picking historical facts does not mean our lives were made worst under religion as it works both ways, religion is our lives whilst existence remains unexplained.
Cherry picking historical facts does not mean our lives were made worst under religion as it works both ways, religion is our lives whilst existence remains unexplained.
whether or not religion made the world better in the past doesn't matter. What matters now is if it is important today and most people in this forum me included would say no. Not to mention either way it seems religion is slowly dieing so its not really us purging it its that its dieing on its own.
