SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA (WTVR) - A father accidentally shot and killed himself at the grocery store Sunday evening, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office. The father, a 45-year-old Spotsylvania man, was in his minivan with his children waiting for his wife to return a DVD to the Redbox outside the Giant Food Store in Harrison Crossing when he was shot, said Captain Elizabeth Scott with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office. The wife said she heard a pop and when she ran back to the minivan, her husband told her he thought he'd shot himself, said Capt. When a Spotsylania County Sheriff's Deputy arrived on scene minutes after the shooting, the man's wife and others in the Giant parking lot were trying to revive the man. The deputy reported the man suffered significant blood loss and was already unconscious when he arrived. The man was later pronounced dead at Mary Washington Hospital, said Capt. Scott. She said the initial investigation indicated when the man tried to unbuckle his seat belt, he hit the trigger of his .40 caliber glock and shot himself in the hip. It is unclear whether the man carried his gun in a holster or his pocket. The family friend says it likely was loose in his pocket. It has also not been determined whether the man was a licensed gun owner, however his wife indicated to investigators she knew he carried a weapon with him from time to time, said Capt. Scott. "If you're going to carry a concealed weapon, put it in a reputable holster," Capt. Scott said when asked about general gun safety tips. The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Department is continuing to investigate the shooting to determine whether there are any signs of foul play.
http://www.wtkr.com/news/wtvr-father-kills-self-grocery-store-20111114,0,2106466.story Inb4 massive gun control debate
He did need a holster after all.
That was pretty dumb of him. Glocks have no "true" safeties you don't just tuck them in your pant line lol. Had it coming pretty much.

Shit happens. If you aren't smart with guns, you'll die, just like this guy. He's not an example of why we need gun control, he's an example of why we need safer gun users, however, a shining, perfect example. He also may have been the type to forget his gun in where kids could reach it, if so, we need gun safety videos and very cheap ones, with free holsters for everyone. I can't imagine the kids reaction though, just imagine, you're shopping all happily, suddenly, out of no where, POP, your father is bleeding and on the ground, and before you know it, dead.
Wow, I thought he got hit in the head or heart. But the hip? Just tie something around the wound, you shouldn't die from something like that.
What a way to go, slowly losing blood from a single bullet wound in your leg
Wow, I thought he got hit in the head or heart. But the hip? Just tie something around the wound, you shouldn't die from something like that.
Femoral Artery. If you cut that you'll bleed out in a mater of minutes. Hell, I needed four pints of blood after my doctor "accidentally nicked" it during hip surgery.
Instantly thought of that gangster that shot his dick off.
The last thing I would ever do is put a striker fire pistol that doesn't have a safety in my pocket. I prefer not to even carry around my XD with a round in the chamber, it's too risky. Most of us wear a capable holster though. That would changed everything for this poor guy.
Wow, I thought he got hit in the head or heart. But the hip? Just tie something around the wound, you shouldn't die from something like that.
It's not that simple. The largest vein and artery in your body both go through your hip. Quite frankly, this man did not deserve to die, but he is a great reminder of gun safety. Guns are the most dangerous things there are (next to cars). Seriously, if anyone reading this ever owns a gun remember these three things: ALWAYS keep a gun in proper working order. The only thing more dangerous than a weapon is an unreliable weapon ALWAYS store a gun properly. That was this man's violation, and a similar one nearly killed my father and uncles when they were children. NEVER point a gun at someone unless you want them to die. Lord only knows how many people misfire at exactly the wrong moment. Guns are amazing tools and can be great fun, but never forget that their only purpose is to destroy, and they are very good at that.
Femoral Artery. If you cut that you'll bleed out in a mater of minutes. Hell, I needed four pints of blood after my doctor "accidentally nicked" it during hip surgery.
Yeah, go out like that, your pretty much 100% dead.
That was pretty dumb of him. Glocks have no "true" safeties you don't just tuck them in your pant line lol. Had it coming pretty much.
They do too have a safety. There is a second trigger that must be pushed in for the main [firing] trigger to be used.
I feel bad for his family, but carrying a loaded gun with a round chambered in your waistband or loose in your pocket is retarded.
They do too have a safety. There is a second trigger that must be pushed in for the main [firing] trigger to be used.
Yeah, but there's no Safety switch on the side. If you somehow manage to hit that little safety or the trigger then it's only a bit more force from pulling the rest of the trigger.
Yeah, but there's no Safety switch on the side. If you somehow manage to hit that little safety or the trigger then it's only a bit more force from pulling the rest of the trigger.
True. Yet again, they where not designed to be easily carried in your pocket :v:
This man was being a moron and wearing a gun in his pocket when it doesn't even have a real safety, what do you expect? He should at the very least have had a holster
Femoral artery man... I know a couple people who died from theirs being severed or cut somehow. If you don't clamp that shit pronto, you're a goner.
He could just as easily have accidentally shot one of his children...
This is why I think gun training should be mandatory for gun ownership...
Even if he wasn't the smartest guy no family deserves this
Even if he wasn't the smartest guy no family deserves this
I agree, if anything I would prefer it that he survived and was permanently reminded why you should get a holster
This is why I think gun training should be mandatory for gun ownership...
Problem is, just having the knowledge isn't going to stop a lot of people from being irresponsible.
Yeah, but there's no Safety switch on the side. If you somehow manage to hit that little safety or the trigger then it's only a bit more force from pulling the rest of the trigger.
They have three safeties, but none are MANUAL safeties, which is one reason I like them. If shit's about to hit the fan then you don't have time to be fumbling around and making sure your gun is good to go. If this guy was using a holster then he wouldn't have shot himself. Carrying a gun, with a round in the chamber, in your pants is not a good idea.
He carried that gun to protect his family from all the dangerous people out there and it worked! His kids will never have to fear being killed in their own minivan by some idiot with a gun. It is pure good luck that he killed himself and not his wife, kids, or an innocent bystander walking by.
A couple years back wasn't there some story about a guy who shot his dick off by... Keeping a gun in the waistline of his pants? This is tragic though, wonder if any of them are gonna develop PTSD? :(
Guns are only as safe as the people in possession of them.
Which frightens me to no end, one of my border-line clinically retarded friends has taken to collecting guns. :tinfoil:
Why would you ever consider keeping a loaded gun in your pocket? He didn't deserve to accidentally kill himself, but it was his own fault.
This is why I think gun training should be mandatory for gun ownership...
Not so much ownership, but being able to carry the gun in public and use on ranges, I've been to many many ranges with pock marks in the floor, holes in the ceiling, some holes pointing back in the wrong direction. Some people just have no respect for the gun because they were never taught to respect it and so they handle it carelessly. The same can be said for many other things such as cars and animals, especially dogs. This guy learned it the hard way, the moment you don't respect something is the moment it kills you.
The reporter in the video said that the gun is believed to be a glock. [thumb]http://crimsonaudio.net/guns/funny/journalist_guns_2.jpg[/thumb]
