CHERRYVILLE, NC (WBTV) -
According to a senior at Cherryville High School, a pair of her red skinny jeans got her kicked out of her Senior Prom and has started a bit of a controversy at the school since.
"In a way it's kind of a slap in the face," said Shafer Rupard, a senior at the high school.
Last Saturday, Rupard and her friends went to the prom that was held at the Cherryville Golf & County Club. After getting inside and onto the dance floor, Rupard says she was approached by a teacher and asked to leave.
"The teacher tapped me on the shoulder and said she had a problem with what I was wearing," said Rupard. "I thought it was because of the hat or the leather jacket and I was like well I'll take those off and she was like no, it's the pants."
Pants Rupard's mother, Shawn McQuaige, says are perfectly acceptable red jeans.
"We looked in the student code of conduct book and there isn't a dress code at all," said Rupard about Prom dress.
Her mother went as far as showing the school's assistant principal the Gaston Schools code of conduct and the prom invitation.
"She looked at it with me and she said you know what you're right there is no dress code here."

Girls with pants is immoral.

To be honest she looks pretty stupid in that.

I guess this revelation post-facto makes it all hunky dory, yes?

That is impossibly adorable! That teacher is a moron.
The teacher sounds like she's on a power high, or just really butthurt that the girl wasn't conforming to her standards of prom dance "etiquette."
I don't understand how people can be so passionate about dumb traditions like this dance. It's all really silly.
I'm so confused, why would you go to a prom in that?
I know there wasn't a specific dress code, but whyyyy?
In my experience proms are just overhyped, overcharged, pretty boring school discos, which involve a dick waving contest in who can wear the most expensive dress/who can arrive in the most exotic manner.

Because traditions like this are apart of our culture and by definition any deviation from societal norms is deviant behavior and deviant behavior, no matter how trivial, will always be met with resistance
I mean prom is a pretty big deal because in a lot of cases its the last time you'll be around the people that you just spent several years of your life with.
Every culture has customs.

It's a contest of how many people can get laid in one fucking night.

All we did at our proms is get pissed up and dance
it's probably that way for most of the UK

Well if it's a fucking night, I'd hope everyone who shows up would get laid.
This is beyond ridiculous. Unless the pants showed her vagina to the world or something equally outrageous, this is in no way a reason to kick her out of the prom for.

I suppose. I feel like if the dance wasn't specifically called "prom," no one would care about it. I grew up watching movies that made the dance out to be this "magical" and "emotional" moment when really in my experience it's just a bunch of kids in rented suits grinding against their dates in a sweaty room somewhere.

Exactly. That's our culture and I'm damn proud that we have the tradition of sweaty teenagers grinding on eachother.

At our end of year 11 prom they really came down hard on pre-drinking so everyone was sober.
The best think about it really was a Scottish guy who we always took the piss out of for being Scottish showed up in a kilt, legend.

Why am I not surprised?
Our school kicks guys out from prom if they don't wear a suit
Someone went to my formal in a neon pink suit.
He was also the tallest kid in school, it was like watching a walking mountain of fairy floss.
I thought it was a pretty common rule that for prom you have to be dressed formally. Hell, at my school even homecoming dances were formal attire only. I can see why she was kicked out, she probably stuck out like a sore thumb. The administration may have thought she wasn't taking it seriously and got butthurt about it. I guess it sucks she got kicked out, but this isn't newsworthy.

Not to forget, most of the suits have a one time use only. You're not gonna wear your fucking Blue/red suit out for a fucking meeting or whatever.

Source claims the school doesn't maintain a dress code for its students. If the prom was formal attire only, I'd expect the teacher to be upset over the entire outfit, not the pants specifically. Not sure the administration should care if students take prom seriously or not either.

Just to play devil's advocate, the school goes through a lot of trouble setting up prom and trying to make it that "special, magical" night that we all know it really isn't. I can see how after all that work and money going into it they would be a little upset if someone showed up in that attire.

I suppose that's a fair point, but should the teacher have been able to eject a student based on what really amounts to personal opinion? Implicit expectations aren't good enough. Unless the school explicitly required certain attire be worn, I don't see how said teacher's decision can be justified.

I know the hat is fuzzy or something, but my goddamn photoshop image browsing habits make me see it like it was photoshopped in, alongside the color of the pants. I must be really fucking tired.
She would look fine if she took off the hat.
But no, the pants are the problem, obviously.
They have it easy, at our equivalent of senior prom we have to wear kilts.
Prom isn't even that great. Our school threw our prom in the staff lounge of the local football stadium for crying out loud
she's pcute though.
My highschool prom was Great Gatsby themed.
they still played shitty ass hiphop and the DJ was a neckbeard wearing an Applejack Fedora. swear to fucking god.
Oh and five people got suspended for literally fucking on stage.
I can understand this if it were the fashion police doing the kicking; but since this was a teacher who is apparently a bull disguised as a human and finds red pants offensive, this student should have been left alone.
