House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes has stepped down from his role leading his committee’s probe of Russia interference in the 2016 presidential campaign and possible surveillance of Trump associates by the prior administration.
He said in a statement:
"Several leftwing activist groups have filed accusations against me with the Office of Congressional Ethics. The charges are entirely false and politically motivated, and are being leveled just as the American people are beginning to learn the truth about the improper unmasking of the identities of U.S. citizens and other abuses of power.
“Despite the baselessness of the charges, I believe it is in the best interests of the House Intelligence Committee and the Congress for me to have Representative Mike Conaway, with assistance from Representatives Trey Gowdy and Tom Rooney, temporarily take charge of the Committee's Russia investigation while the House Ethics Committee looks into this matter.”
People have been calling for you to step down for months my dude
About goddamn time. You've been an obstructionist lackey from day one, doing your damnedest to bury evidence and prevent testimony so that you could hold political influence. Good riddance.
With Bannon stepping down and now this, things are starting to look hopeful. Let's hope this momentum continues.
Bad News the Replace is even worse, Treats Russian Interference as a joke.
WASHINGTON — A Texas lawmaker on the House intelligence committee says it wasn't just the Russians who interfered in last year's election.
Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Midland, is comparing the use of Mexican entertainers to energize Democratic voters to the email hacking that officials say was orchestrated by Vladimir Putin's government.
“Harry Reid and the Democrats brought in Mexican soap opera stars, singers and entertainers who had immense influence in those communities into Las Vegas, to entertain, get out the vote and so forth,” Conaway told The Dallas Morning News this week. “Those are foreign actors, foreign people, influencing the vote in Nevada. You don’t hear the Democrats screaming and saying one word about that.”
Asked whether he considers that on par with Russian cyber-intrusions that aimed to damage Hillary Clinton’s campaign, Conaway said:
“Sure it is, it’s foreign influence. If we’re worried about foreign influence, let’s have the whole story.”
Republican's are bringing about American Whataboutism at this point.
Good man. Integrity still exists on the Hill it seems.

Can we just have Gowdy as SC? Man is loved on a Bi-Partisan level for being the only one to not give a fuck about party lines.

Trey Gowdy is just as bad as a rightwing hack as the rest. He's the man who spent the last several years spearheading the Benghazi witch hunt, which he literally openly admitted was for political purposes, all the while he spent millions of tax dollars running in it. He also famously promised multiple years of more investigations into the fucking email servers if Clinton got elected. The dude has about as much bipartisan credentials as Ted Cruz.

I used to think that, but after seeing his superb performance in the Benghazi hearings I think he's doing just fine where he is running congressional investigations. It would be borderline criminal to confine him to written opinions and a quiet nonpartisan existence. I could certainly see him as a future Speaker of the House, however.

The Republican congressman who admitted that the Benghazi hearings were political and intended to hurt Hillary's poll numbers was Kevin McCarthy, followed later by Richard Hanna. I don't think Gowdy has ever admitted that. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I don't like Gowdy very much. He's been in office for six years, and in that time he's sponsored a whopping 11 bills. One of which was a bill intending to ban all Libyan nationals from engaging in aviation and nuclear-related fields, trying to establish de jure workplace discrimination. He also introduced the ENFORCE The Law Act, which would allow Congress to sue the president if the executive branch does not execute congressional legislation.
You're not wrong about Gowdy's general character, and I agree that saying he is "loved on a bi-partisan level" is totally delusional, but the claim that he admitted that the Benghazi hearings were political is incorrect.
I'm pretty much with you on that Isak, but if Gowdy does/did get involved at a higher level, if there's one person in the US government I'd trust to berate the truth out of the people in question in this situation, it's Gowdy.
He seems to just enjoy grilling people.

With all due respect to Chonch, I'm not sure what you really expect from him. He's a complete hypocrite when it comes to all things Trump, even if he is level-headed in some other areas.

He recognizes the need to step down. I don't give a fuck if he decides to be a shit-kicker about it, it's done and I'm happy and the investigation can proceed with the public's blessing. Not everything in this world gets to be wrapped up in a pretty little bow--I take what I can get.

More like he recognizes that his career is dying, and it would be completely DOA if he hadn't stepped aside
but sure
