• Sonic Boom’s early designs were “traumatic” for Sonic Team
Sonic Boom introduces a new look for the blue hedgehog and his buddies, but it’s a much more conservative style than some of the early concepts big Red Button came up with, which gave Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka the willies. Speaking to Gamespot, Big Red Button’s Bob Rafei said his team took a while to nail down its look, starting off with some wild ideas. “Sonic Team and Sega were very open-minded about our approach, and accepting of a lot of things we were doing. Ultimately, because of some of our really wacky ideas, we did find the boundaries of things we could and couldn’t do,” he said. “We experimented with different colours and surface features on the characters, such as fur or scales, and quickly Sonic Team came back with their discomfort of that. They were great guardrails for us to understand when we were deviating too far from the character. Without their input, the character would have been a lot more alien and different from what Sonic is known for.” Early in the process, Sega brought Iizuka in to look through Big Red Button’s concepts and give feedback. “I felt sorry for the guy because sometimes he couldn’t actually look at the screen – it was too traumatic seeing all the crazy stuff we wanted to do,” Rafei said. “Over the course of that meeting, when we were coming up with new ideas, we had a very sincere conversation about why a character should or should not wear pants, and that was a very surreal moment in my life and my career, but it helped us understand the rules of clothing in this universe. “Any small adjustment went a very long way, so we had to be very careful.”
Source. I wonder if any of these early designs will ever leak, since I am curious what kind of designs would freak Sonic Team out.
were DA artists making those designs? :v:
Its admirable that the Sonic Team guys are this dedicated to their creations despite the countless flops in the series; dedicated enough to keep these guys from making overwhelming changes such as these that would have had a great effect on the characters themselves. This whole situation sort of reminds me of that of the Halo franchise, with the newcomers overstepping their boundaries trying to leave their artistic mark on a well-established series; but at least this time it was stopped from getting too bad What exactly were they planning to put scales on, id like to know
Dammit I wanna see them, *and laugh*

Share the pain. Show pics.
What exactly were they planning to put scales on, id like to know
I just assumed the reptile characters like Vector The Crocodile, and Espio The Chameleon
Jokes aside, if Sonic Team weren't really happy with what Red Button came up with, did "Maybe this wasn't such a good idea." ever cross their minds?
This is quite common in game design, Halo 2 concept art had some really weird weed inspired designs.
I wonder if any of these early designs will ever leak, since I am curious what kind of designs would freak Sonic Team out.
Considering how traumatized everyone is acting over the final designs, it's probably best if humanity never knows.

who cares about this dated franchise just let it die
who cares about this dated franchise just let it die
people who grew up with it?
Who cares about what sonic team thinks, sonic team ruined sonic Sonic Team thought Sonic '06 and Sonic Unleashed were good ideas
people who grew up with it?
a true sonic fan never grows up
who cares about this dated franchise just let it die
The more recent Sonic games have been quite good, though. Generations and Colours were great, and despite the critical reception, Lost World was still an alright game.
knowing concept artists who ignore everything about the source material, there were probably a lot of dumb 'gritty reboot' elements that changed them into mutants with genetic enhancement shit you don't mess with iconic designs too much in the first place, let alone to the point you get reactions like they described
Who cares about what sonic team thinks, sonic team ruined sonic Sonic Team thought Sonic '06 and Sonic Unleashed were good ideas
Sonic 06 was SEGA's fault, and Sonic Unleashed was great in the day stages.
It's a relief that Sonic Boom is an entirely separate franchise and that the mainstream Sonic will not be effected. I'd love to see the original concepts for a good laugh.

Trigger warning: terrible character designs
Sonic Team sounds like an alright bunch of people but they take so fucking long to figure things out right. Literally any change they make to the series will be absolutely abysmal before being good.
What exactly were they planning to put scales on, id like to know
Eggman, of course.
I was really hoping this thread would contain something else.
Sonic Boom's early Dennis Nedry.
Who cares about what sonic team thinks, sonic team ruined sonic Sonic Team thought Sonic '06 and Sonic Unleashed were good ideas
Am I the only damn person on these forums that liked both the day AND night stages in Sonic Unleashed? Really, I don't even hate Sonic 06, ever since I learned that the large reasons why it sucked was because SEGA was forcing a ridiculous time constraint upon Sonic Team, data losses, and other misc things going horribly wrong. If it weren't for those factors, (and possibly the removal of that disgusting human female love interest) it may have been a decent game. I think the only Sonic game I legitimately don't like is Sonic and the Secret Rings. I just have a seething hatred for it. [sp]And that horrid GBA port of Sonic 1, but we don't speak of that anymore.[/sp]
This is quite common in game design, Halo 2 concept art had some really weird weed inspired designs.
i'd like to see what you're talking about
who cares about this dated franchise just let it die
Sonic is the Jay Leno of video game series.
Who cares about what sonic team thinks, sonic team ruined sonic Sonic Team thought Sonic '06 and Sonic Unleashed were good ideas
Don't tell me they thought Sonic 06's release day state was intended.
I wished that Sega would move on with different concepts instead of Rehashing a Character over and over.
