http://stream.aljazeera.com/story/201502171337-0024565
A video appearing to show a Saudi cleric saying the Earth does not rotate around the Sun has gone viral, generating humour and criticism. In the clip, a man identified as Sheikh Bandar al-Khaibari appears to respond to a student's question on whether the Earth is stationary or moving by saying that it is "stationary and does not move". He illustrates his theory with a sealed water cup, trying to explain how a stationary plane would have trouble reaching China if the country was rotating away from it. Saudi TV network Al Arabiya posted a version of the video with English captions to their website. The Arabic language #داعية_ينفي_دوران_الأرض (which translates to "Cleric rejects the Earth's rotation") started trending on Twitter as the video spread, with many poking fun.
Ironic, given that a lot of Islamic scholars back in the day were fine astronomers.
Well, for all we know the sun and the rest of the entire universe could be rotating around us.
Well, for all we know the sun and the rest of the entire universe could be rotating around us.
They're catching on. Call the g-men, we can't let anyone else find out.
The Catholic Church needs to lock this guy up in his own home for this heresy.
I can't say I'm surprised, a lot of the scholars who actually had a clue hailed from the most cosmopolitain areas of the muslim world like Baghdad, the Levant, Egypt and Spain. On the other hand, Arabia proper hasn't changed much from the times of Mohammed.
And people said traveling backwards in time was impossible! Look! I've wound up in the 1300's!
Next Week's Lesson: How the Earth is actually flat because Columbus was a filthy infidel
Technically all the planets and the sun revolve around one another sort of a little bit in a strange way so they're not entirely off
Technically all the planets and the sun revolve around one another sort of a little bit in a strange way so they're not entirely off
He's actually entirely off. He was trying to say that the Earth is completely stationary, not that the sun is in any way also revolving around the Earth. What he's saying is completely ridiculous and the example he used to "prove" his point is nothing but idiotic.
im going to play the devil's avocado here but who's to say he isn't right? for all we know, science is completely 100% theory
Also "all the planets and the sun revolve around one another sort of a little bit in a strange way" is an insignificant technicality in pretty much every situation except astronomy on a level that this cleric is so far away from understanding that it's not even funny.

That's because the earth revolves around the sun.
im going to play the devil's avocado here but who's to say he isn't right? for all we know, science is completely 100% theory
The Earth rotating is not a "theory", barely even in the scientific meaning of the word (which is pretty far from the common use of the word). We know that the Earth is rotating just as much as you know that you are typing letters on a computer and posting them on an Internet forum. If you want to debate the reality of your existence and everything you do then we're quickly moving away from science and into a whole other realm.

the earth is stationary from the reference frame of the earth
the earth is stationary from the reference frame of the earth
no she's not

It's pretty sad what's become of the Middle East, considering that Arabia produced the world's finest astronomers once upon a time. One of the guys I worked with, worldly and sharp in every other respect, had grown up in Saudi Arabia. He thought not only that the sun revolved around the earth, but didn't realize there were other stars out there like the sun. He thought they were all just 'lights'. I thought he was kidding when he first told me.
This is a Tosh.0 web redemption waiting to happen.
the earth is stationary from the reference frame of the earth
What a coincidence: it's stationary in my reference frame too! Or pretty close to it.
And people said traveling backwards in time was impossible! Look! I've wound up in the 1300's!
Quickly. Rally the Mongol hordes and take your rightful place as Great Khan.
Wasn't there also another saudi cleric who said the US people didn't care if women were raped on the roadside as some sort of excuse to ban women from driving?
Wasn't there also another saudi cleric who said the US people didn't care if women were raped on the roadside as some sort of excuse to ban women from driving?
The list of stupid shit Saudi clerics have said may actually be slightly longer than the list of stupid shit US Republican politicians and pundits have said.
Maybe if they try hard enough they can go back in time to bring back dinosaurs.
Oh god some of those comments
He's absolutely right. They don't rotate around the sun. They revolve around the sun. Get it right, idiots.
Next Week's Lesson: How the Earth is actually flat because Columbus was a filthy infidel
Even better since Columbus didn't even think the Earth was round, he thought it was pear-shaped. Everybody else had known for centuries and he was just a bit doolally.
and the islamic calendar just went back 100 years
