MOSCOW (Reuters) – A 63-year-old homeless Russian man has gone from street life to stock market trader after collecting thousands of empty booze bottles for cash, a popular Russian tabloid reported on Tuesday.
Pictured in a majestic purple suit and matching violet jewelry, Leonid Konovalov told the Tvoi Den paper he collected around 2,000 bottles a day over the past year since the economic downturn hit Russia last autumn.
"Russians are drinking a little bit more due to the crisis, and this helped me get out of the rubbish dump," said Konovalov, an ex-engineer from the industrial city of Kemerovo in eastern Siberia who has spent the last 20 years living in a tip.
Russia's many homeless are often seen rooting through rubbish for bottles and tins, which they can trade for money. A glass bottle can fetch about 2 rubles ($0.06).
The bearded former tramp said he was encouraged by his two grandchildren to take risks on the stock market and said his first transaction was a 50,000 euro ($74,120) share-purchase.
I'm glad to see this guy really thinking on his feet to get himself out of the situation he was in.
Hopefully his investments make a nice return.
he should have made more than that for finding just booze bottles in russia
uhhh
heh.
Harley Davidson.
Wow smart guy. Surprised he's on the street with a mind like that.

Anyways, it is actually a good way to score extra cash by collecting bottles and other recyclables and taking them to a recycling place. I did it myself to get some money for bus fare. You just need loads and loads and loads of recyclables for it to work, because most of the time one bag will only net you around $7. (Sometimes the neighbors are fine with you taking their stuff as well if you tell them it's for a good cause, which in my case it was.)
:golfclap:
Well done sir, well done.
I think rubles is a funny name for a currency.

Probably because it's worth about as much as a piece of rubble.

This for some reason reminds me of GTA
2000 bottles a day? That's both crazy and rather impressive.
Most of those bottles were probably alcoholic drinks. We Russians consume the most amount of vodka every year. :colbert:
120 USD a day from being homeless?
O_O
well if i did the math right .06 x 2000 x 365 = $43800 not bad for collecting bottles as a "job"

You have alot of time on your hands if you don't have a job or house.

Well it IS Russia, they all drink in that country
That's a pretty cool turnaround, though I want to see the purple-clad picture of him mentioned in the OP

Michigan also have something like this, you earn 10 cent for every bottle or can you put into there... I once gone up there with my brother and got about 5 garbage bags full of can, and earn a total of 100 bucks

Yeah, something seems off somewhere. Even if he was doing it only 5 days a week, that's still more than a lot of people in the US make.

Ok Peggy I replaaaaaaaaaaaced my waaaaaatch baaaaaatery ate a cinnabuuuun and bought a peeaaaa traaaaap.
Nice to see a man using his head.
So judging by the average amount of bottles he finds and sells, about 2000 a day, and that each bottle is worth about 2 roubles/6 cents, i'd say he makes on average $120/4000 roubles a day, and if he does work on the weekdays only, that'd be about $600/20000 roubles a week. Times that by 4, that'd be his average monthly earnings, about $2400/80000 roubles a month. Times that by 12, and you'd have his rough yearly earnings, $28800/960000 roubles a year. In £, that'd be £17659 a year judging by the current exchange rates. Still a low yearly earnings, but it's probably enough to keep him surviving.

OhooOhooOoOhOooooo then you'll need one of these. But seriously, that guy is a genius.
