The HTC Vive will cost $200 more than its chief competition, the Oculus Rift. The $799 headset, powered by Valve’s SteamVR, will ship with a controller for each hand and a pair of “Lighthouse” laser base stations to track movement in a room-scale environment.
The price was announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where it was also confirmed Vive will ship with an internal microphone and integrated Bluetooth support to work with a variety of smartphones. For a limited time, the system will come bundled with two popular titles: Job Simulator and Fantastic Contraption.
Editors Note: Another publication broke the embargo on this information so we are matching what’s publicly available. Updates to come at 9 a.m. PST with quotes from Valve and HTC.
So, this OP will updated once the embargo lifts and proper articles come out. Which hopefully will also include the European prices. Or maybe that will be when the pre-orders go live on the 29th.
The Vive will be accompanied by Vive Phone Services, which let you stay connected to the real world without exiting the virtual world. The Vive Phone Services allow you to receive and respond to both incoming and missed calls, get text messages and send quick replies and check upcoming calendar invites directly through the headset.
799 was what most people expected. Lol @ those that thought the Vive would be cheaper than the Rift though.

Thats a bit disappointing was expecting it to be less then that, probably going to hold back and see what direction VR takes (sink or swim)
VR is too expensive imo. There's a gap in the market for a cheaper model somewhere.

It's literally brand new state of the art technology, in it's current state it's not intended for the average consumer. Hopefully the price drops and quality increases in the next couple of years but I wouldn't expect anything for a while
VR is really not gonna take off at this rate.

Considering how valve loves new innovative things it is bit weird how they don't go and sell their product with a loss.

It is quite surprising that so many people seem to forget this. Flat screen tvs were expensive as fuck when they first showed up, smartphones too, why would this be any different?
Eh I think with valve's system you are getting the full package, motion controllers, motion tracking and the headset at once instead of occy which is just really the headset

Personally, that's just an excuse for jacking up the prices for money money money. If they didn't ship all of the other crap that comes with it that you don't need, that's easily another £100 taken off. Also, they haven't accounted for the specs being pretty demanding and there also being a heavy cost there.

That isn't/wasn't VR.
I really love the arguments people have for why VR is too much money.
I think for the money, you're getting a whole lot of top of the line technology.
Also people will blow $6-700 on a smartphone without second guessing it now but back in the day that was ridiculous.
I mean fucking hell, if you're trying to get into racing sims a Logitech wheel is easily $250. No hobby is cheap when you're serious about it and VR has no room for people that want to half-ass it

Because this is an HTC product. They need to make money somewhere since Valve is going to make its mones on software through Steam.
Basically what everyone expected, considering the Vive has more in the box than the rift.

Aren't HTC actually having financial issues atm?

Let's see what RAZER and Starbreeze release. Honestly, I think this price is reasonable for the sheer amount of innovative tech put in.

It really isn't that expensive for what you get. It's certainly not affordable for many people, but if you cheap out on the hardware, you won't have good VR.
The only solution to make this cheaper is if either Oculus or HTC subsidize their headsets (or to wait for the components to get cheaper)
To be honest I'm a bit surprised they didn't subsidize their headsets, because the VR market is still quite niche and you need a lot of consumers to justify the resources for development.
That isn't/wasn't VR.
It's not?
I may have chosen the wrong devkit.
i'd pay $799 and not more than that if it's advertised as such
taxes & import fees included
if it's more than that then i'm not getting it, full stop
they had their chance

Found the perfect product for you
(muffed) "Yup, this is definitely the future"

What "other crap"? The games that come bundled with it certainly aren't adding to the price and the other stuff is just part of the Vive itself. And I'm pretty sure that even at these prices they're still probably selling it at a loss, at least the Oculus did and I imagine this isn't much different. There's a lot of very advanced technology and hardware that goes into these things.

The Samsung Gear VR is out there and that's a lot cheaper, though it's obviously running on phone hardware so it's far more basic in almost every way. Though it works pretty well as a cheaper way of showing what VR is capable off.

It's really dumb. Millions of people buy a $700 smartphone every 1-2 years but somehow for those same people an amazing new tech that has only been in science fiction before, is too expensive even at Rift's $600 price not to mention Vive's $799.

I don't even want to bring up how little $799 will get you if your hobby is cars :v:
I paid $350 for my lg g3 last year, and it still holds up, the model being years old.
People buying new 700 dollar phones are just gullible.
If the rift would cost 600 I'd buy it, but it doesn't.

To be fair, the total price would come up to something like 1.8k due to needing a powerful computer
Didn't (someone from) valve say they consider their vr set to be the top-shelf, most expensive one? While the price makes me sad (I love the idea of vr, ar, and things like that and would love to have a vr set) I'm not really surprised - it's an appropriate amount of money for an appropriate amount and level of technology.

Talk for yourself I don't even own a smartphone.

While you're completely right and I'm not disagreeing, but even with the really high specs required, the price of a gaming PC is nothing new and it should be expected that this technology will require top of the line specs for a while

but "millions of people" isn't speaking for everyone lol

They do. They're doing very badly and they hope the Vive will help them.
