I did that as a kid. I put leaves etc. just floating down a small river / ditch / whatever and removed obstacles etc. and followed it as long as I could.

it's a well known fact that the intellectual level of a human child is almost that of a dog.
Gotta love dogs. The little guy doesn't have any worry about if things are depressing or not. Even if that dog was homeless and alone there he'd still be ecstatic to be playing with that ball.
