Porn in classroom 'just for a laugh,' firefighting instructor says
34 replies, posted
The firefighting instructor who showed a pornographic film to volunteer firefighters in a department crippled by accusations of sexual harassment and mass resignations in Newfoundland's Conception Bay says it was "just for a laugh" and not intended to make the one woman in the training course uncomfortable.
"She had just as much of a chuckle about it as everyone else did," said Jeremy Hall, who oversaw the two-day, vehicle-extrication course in April 2014 in Spaniard's Bay.
Hall is a veteran firefighter and chief of the South River-based Bay de Grave regional fire department. For the past decade, he has been a firefighting instructor, certified by Newfoundland and Labrador's Fire and Emergency Services agency.
The video was shown, he said, after a more conventional film that depicted a firefighter extinguishing a fire in a kitchen.
Oh bugger, I was hoping it was this.
He said it was "23 seconds" and involved a female masturbating in a kitchen. The purported joke of the video is that a woman puts out a fire.
Yeah. You fucked up buddy.
Though let's be honest here, it sounds like a case of "well it was funny at the time but I WAS ALSO OFFENDED and my feelings are important," especially since,
He said he cautioned the trainees that the second "Triple-X" video might not be for everybody, and they were free to leave if they desired.
Unprofessional as fuck, yeah, and also completely inappropriate and unnecessary, but I have pretty big doubts about this being "a personal attack."
how fucking stupid do you have to be to think this is a good idea, let alone think it's good enough to actually do
"I do think it was a personal attack on me," said Seymour, who added she is critical of former chief Hiscock for not intervening.
"Our chief was 100 per cent responsible … It was a failure in leadership," she added.
Bad decision on his part but really...
He said he was notified by Fire and Emergency Services this week that his name has been removed from the list of certified instructors.
Ruining a mans life over hurt feelings is a bit extreme. Especially since you don't have any evidence to suggest that you were being targetted.

No, I totally think that's fine. I should feel comfortable with my instructors and I wouldn't feel comfortable around this guy. I don't know who thinks its good to show porn in any type of class.

This guy's clearly good at what he does and that training's probably fucking important considering we're talking about firefighting here, so really I think a reprimand and a warning to stop showing porn at the end of class would suffice.
These are classes full of grown fucking adults by the way, so it really isn't that big of a deal.
What happens if your putting out a fire and you walk into someone's living room and they had disturbing japanese pornography playing on their TV before the fire started. This instructor was simply preparing his students for the realities of firefighting.

Porn is harmless.

ruining a man's career over extremely inappropriate and unprofessional behavior at work doesn't seem that crazy to me
Heyo boyo's, this is in my home turf so I get the chance to declare what's happenin' and fill you all in.
The woman who's complaining laughed and joked at the porn flick, and has accrued herself a reputation that no other firefighter (20+ of them) wish to actually interact with her.
Instead of typing it all out manually, i'll get the reddit post of a person who lives closer to it than I.
This is a fine example of how the media chooses how things are viewed. Don't down vote me just yet, read what I have to say.
You see, ever since this person joined the Spaniard's Bay Fire Department, she's had her eyes on the chief position, doing whatever she could to to undermine anyone in her away. Let me explain a few things.
The incident with the "porno" happened at a training session out of town, a few years ago, with multiple other fire departments. It happened after the training. The instructor who did the indecent act has since been disciplined for his actions. I'm sure she also never mentioned that she had chosen to stay and watch the porno, and even laughed and joked about it with others at the time. She feels that OUR fire chief should be disciplined as well for this even though he had nothing to do with it.
She's never chosen for a higher ranking position in the department because she simply doesn't put anything into it. Yes she's has fire fighter training, but what good is that when you never speak up, rarely show up for fires, rarely perform requested duties. And oh yeah, the whole "only one certified to do this in the department" thing? There is at least 1 more firefighter certified just as much as she is, who also puts a hell of a lot more effort into serving the community than her.
The supposed "death threats" thing is from what I can gather a Facebook conversation between some uninvolved people from Bay Roberts that was screenshoted and printed out and given to her. Irrelevant. And a hitman? Honestly? Who believes this shit?
All the Firefighters walked away because they are sick and tired of just dealing with her bullshit. It's been going on for years to no satisfaction. Members of the department are afraid to be alone with her because they don't know what she'll say or do later. She loves to pull out the harassment/bullying/sexism cards whenever she can to her benefit.
People in the community know this woman is full of shit, that's why theres an almost 800 member Facebook group of residents from Spaniard's Bay who are in support of their Fire Department. It's just that the media skews the public's perception. She was just the one who ran crying wolf to the news outlets first.
I'd expect to hear a response from the Fire Department in the coming days. They're probably just waiting for this to blow over so they can get their word out effectively.
To give credit, we do call those who are still settled around the bay as bayman.
That's going a bit far for a joke. With friends sure, with new recruits no, with a woman absolutely not. At that point it's almost like telling a black joke when there's a black man in the crowd.
He said it was "23 seconds" and involved a female masturbating in a kitchen. The purported joke of the video is that a woman puts out a fire.

While definitely on the mild side of the spectrum, all things considered, squirting probably isn't the first thing you want to drop on someone unexpectedly. I mean, that shit can make a pressure washer look like a leaky faucet sometimes.

Then ask for another instructor. This is not fine.
It's a class of full grown adults, it might be somewhat unprofessional but holy shit take the stick out of your ass.

This should be in the OP. Completely changes the perspective on the story.

This is a job where there's a possibility of having to pull a charred and burnt child to safety from a housefire. If you can't handle a bad joke I don't think you're ready for it.

Say what you will, this shit is a prime example of why someone should not be a certified instructor. Regardless of his intent or whether or not the person complaining was genuinely offended, no one in their right minds should think this is acceptable behavior in a professional environment.
They need to coin a term for when someone does something offensive and then waits for the audience to react before deciding if he was serious or "just pranking bro."

There is a reason why the darkest humor comes from people like soldiers, firefighters and emergency responders.

You know, I considered your opinion and I think you're right. If you can't handle porn and this man's jokes, you aren't fit to be a firefighter. There's no way you could pull a burning child out of a fire if you can't handle walking into a venue that calls for instruction and randomly being presented with the sight of someone masturbating. It means you are both weak and at fault, and you have no sense of humor.
...or maybe it makes no sense to say there's a relation between the ability to watch porn in a place of instruction and the ability to put out fires and save people. Regardless of this person's intentions, they are a complete dope if they thought that what they were doing wasn't risky or potentially offensive. Sure, we can go down the same path of trying to blame the woman or try to make her out to be a manipulative liar as we're pretty accustomed to doing ("But I liked James Dean!"), but even if she is this man practically handed her the baton and regardless I don't think this guy is fit for teaching anything. He blew it.
If anyone at my college decided to start playing porn randomly at the beginning of our lesson, you can bet your ass that there would be complaints and probably a teacher in trouble by the end of the situation. If in any place of employment, if there was porn for the job training, someone would be getting fired. I see this as no different - it's not professional, it sounds disgusting honestly, and I wouldn't want to hang out with the both the employer and even my employees and I'm a dude. If we're going to wail on the woman for "not having a funnybone maaaaaan", how about we impugn the people who aren't taking their job seriously - not just in extinguishing fires but treating everyone around them properly?
I just can't see other people justifying this whole thing if the setting and people were different, or if it happened in their own life. I guess everyone is just latching onto the fact that she was laughing, because people don't laugh when they're uncomfortable, or people don't try their hardest to relate in fear of being outcast. She liked it, obviously.
And hey, maybe the woman is a manipulative liar. It wouldn't be the first time! Let's deal with both the teacher and the woman then. Let's prove that they're both guilty. Let's fire the people responsible for this and ruin the PR for the woman. Or let's suspend the people responsible instead of firing. They're not exclusive.
But don't mind me - it's real easy to respond to this with "oh, you're one of those people that want a safe space", or "PC police", or "you're weak" or whatever dismissive non-argument you throw at me. You can't justify playing porn in a setting like that.

My brother's a soldier, and they have limitations for what they can say, and they gradually get closer to their personal comfort zone with the soldiers they train. Sure, they're brutal mother fuckers, but they can't even say the word "mother fuckers" for a reason. For my brother, all curse words and insults had to be replaced with the word "joker". They have to be "broken down" and "built back up" to become close in that way with them. (and do!)

The problem isn't just what you're describing. The woman has shown to have a complete lack of work ethic and cooperation with her team, occasionally stopping by. But it's also hard to note that she's a 40 year old something woman who actually has no physique for doing such heavy things.
She has no place there, not because she's a woman but because she's inept and a backbiter.

Sure. Let's also make that a problem. But let's not forget what the head honcho did either. I'd be for suspension instead of firing, but oh well.

I never heard of 30 seconds of porn causing firefighters to be inefficient, to be honest. I don't see how this affects whether someone should be an instructor, i.e. teach people how to be effective at their job.
He deserves to be disciplined - which he was - and nothing beyond that.
I don't care at all about what the woman in the story's deal is. Honestly, it's completely irrelevant whether or not she (or any of the other students) were personally offended. This instructor still chose to show graphic pornography in a classroom. That is unprofessional as hell and he deserved to be let go for that. Even if this lady was legitimately amused and is now just crying wolf to try and further her career, as is being implied, it doesn't vindicate the instructor because he still showed graphic pornography in a classroom setting. Unless you are in the adult entertainment field, showing porn to your coworkers is going to get you fired damn near anywhere.

I answer a service request for one of my clients, walk into their auto shop, approach their computer, call over the manager and technicians, and say, "hey, look at this."
I then load up a video of a woman masturbating until she squirts.
"Nice, huh?"
[editline]22nd January 2016[/editline]
I am hosting an open house on behalf of a selling agent, hoping to pick up some new clients. As the first family walks in, I give them some cookies, and say, "before we begin touring the house, I'd like to show you a brief presentation."
I then turn on a projector, displaying a video of a woman masturbating until she squirts.
"Not bad, eh?"
I do agree on the unprofessional attitude, and do feel it's correct for the instructor to having been disciplined.

Except in those scenarios, you didn't warn them about the nature of the video and offer them a moment to leave beforehand.
Except in those scenarios, you didn't warn them about the nature of the video and offer them a moment to leave beforehand.
if you have to warn people before showing them something, unless it's immediately relevant ("as an emt, this is a video of what you can expect to deal with, and it may give you trouble sleeping tonight"), you can probably do just fine without it
gallows humor helps us cope with what we deal with, but there's a big difference between that and the "hey man look at this haha!" attitude of your average 35-year-old ex-jock who never grew up after high school. its about on the level of one of my old college instructors (retired cop) starting lectures with video clips like that one of the chimpanzee pissing into its own mouth or the detective blowjob sketch or stories of watching people having sex in their car, that he thought were ~HILARIOUS~ and it was actually just embarrassing and unprofessional
e: its not an unpardonable offense and i dont know if he should lose his instructor cert but they're both in the wrong lol
Except in those scenarios, you didn't warn them about the nature of the video and offer them a moment to leave beforehand.
Really doesn't change much. He was showing porn in a classroom. It's just stupidly unprofessional. I'd have absolutely stricken him from the instructor roster as well. Hell, even if he had been alone watching porn in his office, and was logged by a company web filter or somesuch, I'd understand perfectly well why he would be fired for that. While I might personally choose just to reprimand him for it unofficially and let him know there would be no further warnings, I wouldn't begrudge any other employer who would choose to fire him outright in such a scenario. School and work are no place for porn, and they're definitely no place to be broadcasting porn to other people.
Coming to your office job wearing cargo shorts and a silk flame shirt is also harmless, but it's also unprofessional and makes you look bad.
That sounds like it would make you look bad in any scenario. Except a cosplaying event.
Cant show porn in a class full of adults but driving classes routinely show snuff to teens
