National security officials have been notified that an underground tunnel was discovered near a venue for this summer’s Pan Am Games in Toronto, CBC News has learned.
The tunnel was dug in the woods near Toronto's Rexall Centre and York University. It was large enough for a person to stand in, at around 2.5 metres in height, and was about seven metres long. The tunnel had lights inside, powered by a generator, and the walls were reinforced.
Sources told CBC News that the tunnel has now been filled in by authorities.
A Toronto and Region Conservation Authority employee reportedly found the tunnel while walking near the TRCA headquarters at 5 Shoreham Dr. in January.
Authorities have essentially ruled out the possibility that the tunnel was going to be used as a drug lab or marijuana grow-op, according to sources. It likely took weeks if not longer to dig, and the earth excavated from the tunnel appears to have been removed from the site to help avoid detection.

I wonder what it was for.
getting bad vibes about this
Honestly, if I found a hidey-hole like this, I'd totally keep it secret.
It'd be like having your own batcave. Kinda.
Sort of disturbing. The tunnel would've been discovered sooner if it wasn't so well hidden, so I suspect whatever it was built for, it was built by someone up to no good. Wish the news hadn't got wind of this - They could've had police or hidden electronic surveillance lying in wait for the person who dug it.
The article says it was probably going to be used for a drug lab or something, but if it was headed towards a highly populated area I can see it being used for something a little more nefarious.

?
Of course when something happens in this city it needs to be incredibly mysterious. Honestly sounds like some kind of bomb plot (Not trying to be that guy) because of the odd odd circumstances.
Wouldn't this have been a bit costly?
Very eerie and disturbing, the fact that it was just a tunnel dug from the woods, lit up, reinforced and everything, yet seemingly unused and not leading anywhere... The mystery is intriguing.
Forget Jeff the Killer and NES Godzilla, this is some real fear inducing material.

It really is a huge amount of effort over a drug lab - excavating huge volumes of earth, reinforcing it, providing power for the lights, gasoline/diesel for generaters, and on top of all that keeping it undercover? I highly doubt it, it's much more logical and profitable for big cartels to buy a shitty trailer or rent out low income housing. Unless there's some meth head flying solo who dug out a hidey hole for his personal lab....
Clearly, this is the work of our subterranean foe, the mole people.

Yeah cause people dig reinforced tunnels through the woods all the time and definitely wouldn't have something like that for nefarious purposes right?
I'd like to know exactly what this tunnel was dug under, I mean a 7 meter tunnel isnt exactly that long so was it under a security wall or what?
They didn't find any corpses or blood or anything inside so what the hell? If its use wasn't drug-related, what could it be? I can't think of anything. Secret meetings for organized crime? Surely a trailer or something would fulfill most purposes? Maybe used as an intermediate site for large volumes of illicit cargo?

future bombing site near the games
Is there any other reasonable conclusion?
well, it isn't entirely unreasonable to think it was just some dude digging out a tunnel for shits and giggles since that has happened before

but could it have been used to like...transport things like drugs?
mysterious tunnels in the middle of a city are a always interesting
Oh hey, it's near Jane and Finch. That makes sense..

Would someone spend weeks to build a tunnel to transport drugs 23 feet?
Seems like a likely reason behind the tunnel, especially it being so close to the games location. Too much of a coincidence.
Unless the bomb's massive I doubt they would have reinforced the walls if they were going to do that.

By 'reinforce' they might've been talking about stabilizing it with supports. Without that, the tunnel collapses.
Maybe someone just wanted somewhere cool to chill, smoke, and play videogames at
I feel like there is someone in the world shaking their fist and wondering why a guy can't just have a secret tunnel anymore nowadays.

What the fuck?
It's those bloody preppers again.
Setting up shelters everywhere and then taking their shit to court when people say they're not allowed to and they're tresspassing.
Here are some pictures of the tunnel from here, hopefully they work

They did a pretty decent job by the looks of it, I'm surprised it wasn't found earlier due to that massive pile of dirt
That's pretty sick. I tried to do stuff like this a few times when I was a kid living on 30 acres, but always got bored about 4 feet deep.
