Lady Gaga's second album 'Born This Way' is reported to have cost online retailer Amazon over $3 million (£1.85 million) since it went on sale last Monday (May 23). The retailer had been selling the digital version of the album at a heavily discounted 99 cents (60p) in a effort to hook in customers, but according to the New York Magazine, it has set Amazon back over $3 million as they have been paying the singer's record label Universal $9 (£5.60) per album they sell. As they've moved over 440,000 downloads, this adds up to over $3 million. Gaga said yesterday that she believed a digital version of 'Born This Way', wasn't worth more than the 99 cents Amazon were charging. She said: "For MP3s and digital music. It’s invisible. It’s in space. If anything, I applaud a company like Amazon, for equating the value of digital versus the physical copy, and giving the opportunity to everyone to buy music." 'Born This Way' was released last Monday (May 23) and has so far shifted over 1.1 million copies in the US and over 220,000 in the UK.
http://www.nme.com/news/lady-gaga/57062 I know not everyone is fond of Lady Gaga or her music, but I think this comment deserves some appreciation.
Her music is crap and too mainstream IMO
Ballsy stuff from Amazon. Would just buy the CD anyway, it's nice to have a hard copy as well.
Her music is crap and too mainstream IMO
Mainstream isn't necessarily bad. I think Lady Gaga is pretty talented; if she happens to be popular too, so be it.
Her music is crap and too mainstream IMO
I had it on vinyl before they sold out and went mainstream.
Mainstream isn't necessarily bad. I think Lady Gaga is pretty talented; if she happens to be popular too, so be it.
I don't like her music but I know she's a talented artist and actually takes up causes so she's pretty awesome.
inb4 lady gaga makes a song about being in the internet floating through cyberspace
Her music is crap and too mainstream IMO
I feel you man, mainstream is not underground enough. Not a fan of her at all, but I do appreciate her as a person, she's not dumb.
I had it on vinyl before they sold out and went mainstream.
Well I had it on wandering bard first
Yeah but amazon make like $2 million every hour iirc
Notice how they pay 9$ to the label, not the artist.
What the fuck Gaga said something that makes sense.
Except they pay most to Gaga, it's not like they want to lose one of their most popular singers to another label, Less popular singers are barely paid because they have no choice.
Haha, no. Breakdown of the distribution of a $15 cd
$0.17 Musicians’ unions $0.80 Packaging/manufacturing $0.82 Publishing royalties $0.80 Retail profit $0.90 Distribution $1.60 Artists’ royalties $1.70 Label profit $2.40 Marketing/promotion $2.91 Label overhead $3.89 Retail overhead

Notice how they pay 9$ to the label, not the artist.
notice that that's kind of how record deals work
Gettin' 440,000 people to listen to a new album worthes 3milion in my opinion, good deal.
Haha, no. Breakdown of the distribution of a $15 cd
In some cases it's less than that. The majority of the money that artists get is from touring and merchandise
Even though she copies Madonna a lot, I think she's a very talented and smart artist. Hell, I'll admit: I like her music.
Haha, no. Breakdown of the distribution of a $15 cd
that's the reason many artists stick to an indie label
I would have bought it if I knew about the sale in time. I think it was limited to the day of release and I found out the following day. Gaga's music is ok, but the free Cloud Storage that came with the purchase would have been worth it. It was like 50gb of online storage I think?
I don't really like Gaga as a musician but she does do some pretty awesome things and I agree with most of what she stands for.
99 cents is a damn good deal considering Amazon's other musical album costs. If it's worth buying depends on your musical taste most of all though.
They didnt lose anything. In order to lose it, you need to have it first. Im sick of companies like this saying "We're losing money because..." when all they lost was nothing.
Shitty music, and a stupid idea on Amazon's part. The kind of people that will only buy an album if you drop the price to 99¢*are not the kind of people you want as customers. I just have a problem with how she dresses for attention. Was funny at first, but now it's a drag. Like seriously, stop with the shit.
Haha, no. Breakdown of the distribution of a $15 cd
I'm not saying anything related to the breakdown, but for how long have CD's been $15? I remember as a kid I'd get $10 for my birthday and I'd go down to a cd store and buy two double disk sets (michael jackson and stevie ray vaughan). They're pretty expensive now, god damn.
