#IWishMyTeacherKnew- Students Share Their Heartbreaking Stories

(CNN)It's the simplest possible assignment, but it always teaches a huge lesson. Every year, Denver teacher Kyle Schwartz passes out Post-it notes to her third grade students and asks them to complete the sentence, "I wish my teacher knew ..."
Many of the students she teaches at Doull Elementary just wish they had something in common with her, that she knew soccer or video games.
But sometimes, their wishes bring tears to her eyes, and offer a glimpse of painful struggles in their young lives.
There's a student who misses her father: "I haven't seen him in six years."
I don't know if this is news, but I found it a sad and interesting article to read.

Holy crap, some of those are just straight up mind numbing.
I wish these students knew...
...how to properly spell.

Well these are gradeschool students so
I'm really glad attention has been brought to this, it's so so important to recognize the sort of things children and students go through
I really hope one day schools are more considerate and understanding of personal/mental health issues as it will really benefit everyone

Does "play" at all sound like "payl" to you?
Basically, I'm taking a stance similar to that of Maddox, except in his case, with crappy artwork.

ah yes, because this is certainly the point of the article; to highlight typos and poor grammar!!
way to be a dick about it
I wish teacher knew how sexy he looks in those jeans

The understanding of mental health is HUGE in a school environment, for sure. I went through all of highschool with serious anxiety problems that got worse over the years, and it severely impacted my grades. If I could have explained things to my teachers, or even understood it well enough myself, I probably wouldn't have failed so many classes. Instead, I got called stupid, or labeled as a problem student because I wasn't turning things in, and that just made things worse.

I knew a girl who was like that while I was in the fourth grade. She wrote ultra fucking neat like that and used a pen instead a pencil.

It's nice that these kids can talk to their teachers, wish teachers would have given a damn about me when I was at school.

If you're going to mimic Maddox maybe you should understand he does a lot of satire first.
I really wish they could have done this earlier. This would've saved me a lot of hardship during school.
even college students need this
[editline]22nd April 2015[/editline]
especially college students

Lol, how old are you and you don't even know how to properly use commas, much less understand simple sentence structure? If you're going to complain about grade school children not knowing how to spell perfectly then it's perfectly reasonable for me to complain about your inability to understand simple sentence structure. The proper way to phrase what you're saying would be, "I'm basically taking a similar stance to Maddox's view on crappy artwork."
I like this one

Qualifier: I'm a huge fan of Maddox.
A lot of his criticisms with children have to do with the fact that coddling them as winners for failure is bad. His mentality is, "You need to give your children some heat because if they can't take heat from their parents, they're not going to be able to take the heat from anyone else." And of course, he's not saying to lash out on them or anything, but to criticize them in a way that makes them better.
In this scenario, however, they're opening up themselves to the teacher in a way that cuts spelling out of the picture. It is much more important to focus on the personal issue first. Completely ignoring their mental state while also moving on to burn them for their attempt to talk to you will cause further problems.

That's a pretty damn good break down of the situation.
These kids, unlike with most kids drawings, are directly being told "Hey, this is an avenue for you to tell me something you wish I knew, something you think would help me and you relate". To shit on them for stumbling over the english language as all kids do, have done, and always will do, while trying to communicate and relate in a way they're rarely told(Well, that's an anecdote, i'll be honest, I have no idea how many options normal kids got to talk to people about their problems) they have available to them seems nothing but cruel to me.
But in relation to the art work and taking heat from their folks in a neutralish way is pretty spot on.
You can still appreciate a kid's artwork and compliment them for doing a good job while also talking to them about what they can improve on. I think wicked may have been a little too impressionable with the satire itself instead of understanding the point.
