The biggest snowfall in 111 years proved the first real test for the “feminist” or “gender-equal” snow removal policy brought in by a new municipal council controlled by a Left-Green coalition. The city government is intent on putting as much civic energy into clearing bike paths and sidewalks used by environmentally- and fitness-minded women as into the roads frequented by male-dominated motor vehicle traffic. But chaos reportedly was the result for both genders, according to the tabloid Aftonbladet’s headline, “Feministisk snöröjning funkar inte i Stockholm,” (“Feminist Snow Removal Flunks in Stockholm.”) Buses (also, it turns out, heavily used by women) were stuck by the hundreds on roads blocked by stalled cars. Light rail trains moved at half speed, forcing stranded commuters to walk for hours to get home from work, slipping and falling on glasslike sidewalks and bike paths. Others stayed home with children as schools shut down.
Gender-equal snow removal. I'm fucking speechless.
Life just feels like a fever dream after this month
Haha, holy fucking shit. This has to be a snow induced fever for it to be real. How do you fuck up simple snow clearing???
I mean...what?
Of course when they enacted that policy it would just so happen to have the biggest fucking snowfall in over a century. Of fucking course.
So am I reading this correctly: the pavement/sidewalk was seen as mainly for women while the roads were seen as 'male-dominated'? So they decided to empower women by clearing the pavements first. What?
I read about this a few days ago and I still don't believe it. This all happened despite the city's $270,000 increase in snow-clearing budget.
This is so stupid.
So am I reading this correctly, the pavement/sidewalk was seen as mainly for women, while the roads were seen as 'male-dominated'? What?
According to surveys, women were much more frequently walking/riding bicycles, so to make things """equal""", they focused on clearing the sidewalk instead. Resulting in this clusterfuck.
Of course when they enacted that policy it would just so happen to have the biggest fucking snowfall in over a century. Of fucking course.
Wonderful, isn’t it? Its the little things in life that create joy.
Perfect example of why western society is fucked up right now.
The city government is intent on putting as much civic energy into clearing bike paths and sidewalks used by environmentally- and fitness-minded women as into the roads frequented by male-dominated motor vehicle traffic.
What the fuck Roads have much larger surface area and have a more extensive network, of course you need more effort to clear them. Imagine having an ambulance stuck in the snow just because bike paths were priority.
Swedish failures are as sweet music to my danish ears. Keep it up.
whoever came up with this bullshit was a dumb motherfucker
I saw this back-firing the first time I heard about this ages ago. Glad to see I was right.
Everytime I hear a Sweden joke I roll my eyes and mark it off as daft, then I hear stories like this one.
Sweden is like a very bad joke of a country given how keen it is on screwing itself over in the most embarassing ways for no real reason.
What the fuck are my northern neighbors doing?
I live in Stockholm and this is the first I've heard of this. And now I'm trying to process and comprehend it. I don't know where to begin...
Sometimes I joke about how progressive laws and regulations take time before coming to Finland from Sweden. Nowadays I see it as a blessing.
It's like another Onion article...except it's not.
Reading the Swedish sources it seems, though, that not even the bike lanes or the side walk have been cleared - while I think the idea is stupid in the first place (clearing the pavement and car lanes should have probably not have more than equal priority in the first place), it seems the extreme snowfall (and perhaps some ineptitude) is the real issue here, and not just that all resources have been diverted to clear sidewalks.
Buses (also, it turns out, heavily used by women) were stuck by the hundreds on roads blocked by stalled cars.
Fucking irony.
Theres snow hope for Sweden anyway.

I obviously am no expert on swedish snow clearing but i could imagine a situation where some idiot politican said "clear the sidewalks first" then the sidewalk snow cleaners couldnt even get there or were much slower because the roads obviously hadn't first been cleaned.
Politically oriented management of core public services is obviously a bad idea, but I never thought I would see a literal "slippery slope" happen in my lifetime. :v:
They look out for themselves and people are surprised by the results. Seriously though, how the fuck do you screw up snow clearing? It's one of the easiest things to do once you get wrapped up for the cold.
I'm in Stockholm right now and there's no snow here.

I gotta admit it's a bit funny, but this was the worst snowfall Stockholm had seen in decades, and no matter what it's very hard to prepare for stuff like that. Of course you can blame it all on the "progressive" left but this happens every time snow falls in Stockholm, and has for my whole life, it's just that this time it was extra bad. Whoever's not in charge is gonna blame the other side instead of coming up with something that would actually solve the problem. Just look at this crap from the aftonbladet editorial:
"Den rödgrönrosa majoriteten har en del att fundera över innan den verkliga vintern sätter in. Sanda, ploga och forsla bort bilar som står i vägen. Så svårt kan det inte vara." Loosely translated: The red-green majority has a whole lot to think about before the real winter starts. Sand and plow the roads, and move the cars blocking the road. It can't be that hard.
Yeah... It can't be that hard, right? Except the same thing would've happened if someone else was in charge, the only difference would've been that the aftonbladet editorial would've been written by someone from the green party, writing about how it's impossible to fund transport infrastructure with these low low taxes. And honestly, had this article not had the "feminist progressives ruins the day again" headline, would anyone outside of sweden really give a shit about it? I mean, I'm swedish and I barely care.
