Picture: File Source: http://www.news.com.au/national/parliamentary-speaker-harry-jenkins-overruled/story-e6frfkvr-1226066575736 [release]A CONSTITUTIONAL crisis has been averted when the House of Representatives effectively voted no confidence in Speaker Harry Jenkins, and he had to consider resigning. He stayed but only after Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and Prime Minister Julia Gillard begged him not to quit. “It is genuinely a new paradigm so please, Mr Speaker, do not add to the difficulties of this day by feeling you cannot continue in the chair,’’ said Mr Abbott, moving a motion asking Mr Jenkins to stay put. The show of no-confidence in the Speaker came when he tried to eject Liberal Bob Baldwin for 24 hours for un-parliamentary behavior. The Government moved a routine motion endorsing the ejection, but lost the vote, which meant Mr Jenkins’ ruling had been overturned. The last time a Speaker resigned on a confidence issue was in 1975 when Jim Cope tried to eject minister Clyde Cameron for disrespect to the chair, and Labor Prime Minister Gough Whitlam refused to back him. He quit on the spot, following long accepted practice. However, the hung Parliament means such issues are not as clear cut. Independent Rob Oakeshott voted against Mr Baldwin being turfed out, but most of the other cross bench MP abstained.[/release]
Not really newsworthy as he didn't actually quit. Even if he did quit, I don't think anyone cares about us much to consider it as news anyways.

What did the MP do to piss off the speaker?
Don't they have a tournament of people sword-fighting and jousting to determine the new speaker?
