• Any recomendations for a wifi antenna?
    16 replies, posted
I recently moved to a new apartment and the wifi router here, while capable, is a few walls away. Currently I have a intel 2200 wifi adapter in my rig with the standard antenna. It works just fine, and has done on previous networks, but I feel the lag/ping spikes I'm getting is due to how far I am from the router. Would a larger antenna/one with a long lead I can poke out of my door help in your opinion? if so, any recommendations? and no, sadly a hard connection is not a option here.
Is that the 802.11G or N 2200?
desktop version of the N 2200
I usually trust anything Netgear or TP-LINK, if your router supports it, get a 5ghz one. You could also look into the power line or a access point to extend the range.
Sorry for the late reply, but honestly I'd get a newer card if you could. Grab a midrange ASUS card or a TPLink, I'd avoid Netgear at almost all costs. If you router is newer get one that has 2x2 MIMO 5ghz, will do wonders.

However, if you can find a place with near line-of-sight on the router (or line-of-sight-when-reflected off-a-wall), you can run a USB 3.0 extension of 5-15 feet to a USB WiFi card with a directional antenna to get the best range.
pardon my ignorance but aren't usb wireless adapters usually slower? Any particular models you'd like to recommend?
Not noticably slower if you go USB3, although some people are vehemently opposed to them. I haven't had any problems after turning off power saving features. As for recommended WiFi models, it really depends on your budget, distance from the best location of the WiFi adapter, ports on your computer, and how weak of a signal you get. Unless you're pinching pennies, it's not particularly worth buying anything less than Wireless AC nowadays and I like Alfa's model barring the fact that the cradle and cord is USB2 for some inexplicable reason so you'd have to find a separate USB3 cable.
You can't move the router or put a extender part of the way? (Preferably cabled)
no can do. however i moved furniture around and found a coaxial outlet in my room... will just get a modem/router of my own and make my own mini-network lol. should work right?
Can't you just drill a tiny hole and run a cable through the walls? That's what I did in my old place. I just ran it along the skirting board and nobody ever noticed.
Set a repeater up half-ways?
doubt it would be worth it, would still be going through the same ammount of walls in the end. really do think that using the coaxial outlet in my room to make my own network but still on their internet plan is best. doing some digging the buildings network is so ass because 1: they use the standard rental telecom modem/router to serve my apartment, themselves and my upstairs neighbor and 2: the network is also bogged down with a HD cctv system... I now doubt it's the walls/wifi strength that's the issue here!

The wireless on that telecom router is definitely the issue, if you can't convince them to change it out you may have luck with a good antenna.
